The Masque of Mandragora Part 2

The Doctor and Sarah Jane must stop an ancient cult and an alien entity from taking over 15th-century San Martino, while navigating the complex politics of the city's ruling family.

The Doctor and Sarah Jane escape execution in 15th-century San Martino by using the Doctor's cunning and agility. They soon discover that an ancient cult of Demnos is being manipulated by an alien entity known as the Mandragora Helix. The cult is using the Helix's power to further their own dark agenda. As the Doctor and Sarah Jane navigate the treacherous politics of San Martino's ruling family, they must also prevent the Mandragora Helix from gaining control through the cult. The Doctor explains that the Helix energy is not from this time or place, and that it has been brought to the 15th century through their own TARDIS. With the help of Duke Giuliano, they plan to destroy the temple where the cult is based, but they are thwarted by Count Federico, Giuliano's power-hungry uncle, who seeks to eliminate Giuliano and rule San Martino himself. The story builds to a confrontation between the Doctor, Sarah Jane, and Giuliano against Federico and the cult, with the fate of San Martino hanging in the balance.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor's daring escape from execution in San Martino, using his scarf as a whip and commandeering a horse, leaving Count Federico's men in disarray. While evading pursuit through the city's labyrinthine streets, the Doctor overhears guards discussing a mysterious, non-natural death of a gate guard, hinting at an unknown threat. Simultaneously, the ancient cult of Demnos is introduced, performing ritualistic chants and preparing for a human sacrifice within their temple. Sarah Jane Smith is revealed as the intended victim, brought to the altar as the cultists, led by a masked figure, prepare the ornate dagger. The Doctor, having discovered a secret passage, intervenes at the last moment, saving Sarah as the dagger strikes the stone altar. This dramatic rescue coincides with the manifestation of a red energy bolt, which the Doctor immediately identifies as the Mandragora Helix, declaring its return. The masked figure, a priest of Demnos, interprets this as a divine answer to their prayers, signaling the cult's renewed power. The Doctor and Sarah escape the temple, only to be apprehended by Giuliano's guards. They are brought before Duke Giuliano, a man of science who dismisses superstition but is perplexed by the dead guard's strange, turquoise skin. The Doctor explains the Mandragora Helix as an alien energy brought to 15th-century Earth by their TARDIS, now empowering the Demnos cult. This shared understanding of a scientific, yet malevolent, force leads Giuliano to ally with the Doctor and Sarah. They discuss the political landscape, revealing Count Federico's tyrannical nature and his plot against Giuliano, who seeks to establish a new era of enlightenment in San Martino. The Doctor concludes that the temple, now a focal point for the Helix's power, must be destroyed to prevent its influence from spreading. This act establishes the immediate dangers, introduces the core conflict between science and superstition, and forges the alliance necessary to confront the encroaching alien threat.

Act 2

Following the formation of the alliance, the political machinations of San Martino intensify, escalating the threat. Count Federico, Giuliano's power-hungry uncle, grows increasingly agitated by the Doctor and Sarah's presence and Giuliano's burgeoning influence. Federico learns that Giuliano has invited powerful rulers from across Italy to San Martino, a move that would solidify his claim to the dukedom and thwart Federico's ambitions. Driven by a desperate need to eliminate his nephew, Federico confronts Hieronymous, the Duke's astrologer and the masked leader of the Demnos cult. Federico, mocking Hieronymous's astrological practices, demands Giuliano's immediate assassination, reminding him of past collaborations and insisting on a "sudden death" before Giuliano can consolidate his power. Hieronymous, while initially resistant to inventing a horoscope, is deeply entangled with the Mandragora Helix. In the temple, Hieronymous, in full regalia, appeals to the Mandragora for greater powers, expressing his vulnerability as a mere mortal away from the temple's influence. The Mandragora, however, denies his immediate request, urging discretion and promising ultimate power "when the time is not yet." Hieronymous then reveals his long-standing connection to the "voice of Demnos" and his deep-seated ambition to rule Earth, fueled by years of scorn from scholars and the ruling elite. Back in Giuliano's chamber, the Doctor further elucidates the Helix's strategy: using the 15th century, a bridge between superstition and reason, and the existing Demnos cult to gain control of Earth. He reiterates the urgent need to destroy the temple. Despite the dangers, Giuliano insists on accompanying the Doctor to the temple, offering a sword and a secret route. As they approach the ruins, a guard spots them, inadvertently alerting Federico. Federico, upon hearing of Giuliano's presence at the temple, seizes the opportunity to eliminate both his nephew and the perceived "pagan worshippers" in one stroke, framing it as a righteous act. He mobilizes his men, leading them to ambush Giuliano and Sarah, initiating a direct confrontation and leaving the Doctor isolated.
