The Masque of Mandragora Part 4

As the Doctor and his companions navigate a sinister plot by the Brethren and Mandragora, they must prevent a catastrophic takeover that threatens Earth's future.

In the screenplay 'The Masque of Mandragora - Part Four', the Doctor and his allies work to thwart the evil plans of Hieronymous and the Brethren, who seek to harness the power of Mandragora to dominate the Earth. The story begins with Federico being turned into ash by Hieronymous, who aims to use the power of Mandragora to conquer the world. The Doctor, masquerading as a Brother, infiltrates the cult but is discovered and forced to escape. He meets with Giuliano, the new ruler of San Martino, and together they try to stop the Brethren's attack on the palace. The Doctor uses his knowledge of astronomy and science to understand the true nature of Mandragora's power and devise a plan to defeat the Brethren. As the Brethren launch their assault on the palace during a masque, the Doctor works to drain the Helix energy and prevent Mandragora from swallowing the Moon, which would grant the cult ultimate power. In the climactic finale, the Doctor confronts Hieronymous in the temple, and with the help of his companions, manages to defeat the cult and send Mandragora back to square one. The story concludes with the Doctor departing in his TARDIS, leaving Giuliano to rule San Martino and warning him of future threats from Mandragora.

Act 1

The narrative opens with Hieronymous executing Federico, reducing him to ash, and declaring Mandragora's imminent global dominion, prophesied by the Moon's consumption. The Doctor, having infiltrated the Brethren's ranks, discreetly withdraws from the temple. Simultaneously, Rossini prepares to execute Sarah and Giuliano, but the Doctor intervenes, announcing Federico's death and asserting Giuliano's legitimate claim to rule. This revelation prompts the palace guards to shift their allegiance, forcing Rossini to yield. Marco advocates for an immediate assault on the temple to destroy the remaining Brethren, but the Doctor, recognizing the cult's escalating power, advises Giuliano to fortify the palace, anticipating a direct attack rather than risking a suicidal offensive. The Doctor explains that Mandragora's power remains incomplete, intrinsically linked to the prophesied 'Moon swallowing' event. Soon, Marco reports the Brethren's aggressive actions: they drive townspeople away with destructive energy bolts, effectively isolating the palace and escalating the threat. Giuliano, despite his apprehension about holding the masque amidst such danger, yields to Marco's counsel to proceed, maintaining an illusion of normalcy for the assembled European nobility and preventing perceptions of weakness. The Doctor, meanwhile, begins his scientific investigation in Hieronymous's former chamber, seeking to understand the true nature of Mandragora's power and devise a counter-strategy. This act establishes the immediate, existential danger, shifts the political power within San Martino, and sets the stage for the Doctor's strategic counter-planning amidst growing external pressure and the looming threat of the Brethren's final assault.

Act 2

The Doctor's scientific inquiry culminates in a breakthrough: he identifies the 'Moon swallowing' as a lunar eclipse, pinpointing its exact time. He then reveals Mandragora's true, insidious nature to Sarah: it does not conquer physically but dominates by Helix energy, stripping humanity of purpose and turning them into 'idle, mindless, useless sheep.' Armed with this understanding, the Doctor devises a counter-strategy, declaring, 'Exhaust it. Exhaust it, that's the answer,' and requests a breastplate and wire for his plan. Meanwhile, Hieronymous, now seated on the temple throne, reveals his own detailed plan to his priest: infiltrate the palace masque using a secret entrance and disguised Brethren to destroy all assembled scholars, rulers, and nobles. This act of mass execution will establish Mandragora's supremacy. The Doctor, preparing for his counter-attack, dons a lion costume and has the armourer fit him with a breastplate, concealing the wire. He then issues tactical instructions, ordering Marco to open the dungeon entrance and tasking Sarah with observing the disguised Brethren during the masque. He explains his theory to Sarah: negatively charged high-energy particles (Helix energy) follow magnetic lines of force, allowing him to drain the energy if his hypothesis about its nature proves correct. He acknowledges the fatal risk if he is wrong, underscoring the high stakes of his plan.

Act 3

As the masque begins, Hieronymous signals his Brethren to surround the palace, awaiting his command to strike from within. Simultaneously, the Doctor, disguised in a lion mask, enters the temple and begins meticulously setting up his energy-draining device around the altar. Hieronymous confronts the Doctor, explaining Mandragora's cosmic imperative to prevent humanity's expansion beyond Earth, viewing them as a potential rival. Hieronymous unleashes energy bolts, attempting to destroy the Doctor, but the specially prepared breastplate absorbs and depletes Hieronymous's power, leaving him weakened and frustrated. In the Throne Room, Sarah notices the Doctor's prolonged absence. A masked figure in a lion costume appears, but it is an energy being, not the Doctor. This figure serves as the signal for the disguised Brethren to cast aside their cloaks, revealing their true identities and launching a devastating attack on the unsuspecting guests. The energy-infused Hieronymous then orders the captured survivors, including Sarah and Giuliano, to be taken to the temple for the final sacrifice as the lunar eclipse begins. In the temple, as the Brethren place their hands on the altar to absorb Mandragora's power, the Doctor, now revealed to be disguised as Hieronymous, unveils his deception. His device has successfully drained the Helix energy, neutralizing Mandragora's immediate threat and causing the Brethren to collapse into empty cloaks. With the cult defeated, the Doctor, Sarah, and Giuliano exchange farewells. Giuliano assumes his rightful place as ruler of San Martino, while the Doctor imparts a final warning: Mandragora will return in approximately five hundred years, coinciding with the end of the 20th century. The Doctor and Sarah then depart in the TARDIS, leaving Giuliano to rebuild and prepare for a distant, future threat.
