The Hand of Fear Part 4

The Doctor and Sarah try to help Eldrad, a Kastrian leader, escape from her own deadly acid and alien invaders, but Eldrad's true intentions threaten the galaxy.

The Doctor and Sarah assist Eldrad, who has been injected with a deadly acid designed to neutralize her molecular bond. Eldrad reveals she developed the acid and there is no antidote. They rush to the regenerator chamber on level 306 to save her. Meanwhile, alien invaders and a Kastrian, presumed to be traitors, pursue them. The Doctor uses Eldrad's ring to access the chamber and attempts to save her using the regenerator. However, the process goes awry, and Eldrad is destroyed. A real Kastrian, Eldrad, emerges, revealing her true form and intentions to conquer the galaxy. Eldrad outwits her enemies and takes control, but ultimately, the Doctor thwarts her plans by giving her back a fake ring, which she uses to try and escape, only to fall into an abyss. The Doctor and Sarah return to the Tardis, and Sarah is returned to her home in South Croydon.

Act 1

The Doctor and Sarah race to save Eldrad, who has been injected with a deadly acid she herself developed. Eldrad directs them to the regenerator chamber on level 306, the only place capable of reconstituting her molecular structure. As they descend through the Kastrian dome, a computer voice tracks their progress, identifying them as "intruders" and a "Kastrian," implying pursuit by the alien invaders Eldrad previously mentioned. They navigate a series of boobytraps designed for silicon-based lifeforms, which Sarah, a carbon-based lifeform, narrowly avoids, much to the Doctor's amusement and her own terror. They discover the dome's lower levels are littered with the crumbled remains of silicon creatures, hinting at a past conflict or disaster. Sarah grows suspicious about the traps and the unusual presence of two silicon-based lifeforms in the galaxy. Their path is blocked by a vast abyss, which they cross precariously on a fossilized tree trunk, the Doctor carrying the rigid Eldrad. Upon reaching the regenerator chamber door, Eldrad attempts to open it directly, but the Doctor intervenes, using Eldrad's ring as a key to bypass a hidden defense mechanism. He places Eldrad on a large stone table, initiating the regeneration process as cracks begin to appear across Eldrad's body. The race against time culminates with Eldrad's fate hanging in the balance, setting the stage for the true nature of their mission to be revealed.

Act 2

The regeneration process commences, but the dome's computer identifies Eldrad as a "genocide, anarch" and predicts obliteration, not rebirth. A massive slab descends, crushing Eldrad, seemingly destroying her. Sarah is horrified, believing they have killed her, but the Doctor realizes they have been manipulated. From the pulverized remains, a new, crystalline, male form of Eldrad emerges, revealing his true identity and confirming the previous female form was merely a disguise adopted for human interaction. Eldrad boasts of designing and controlling the regenerator, mocking his enemies' futile attempts to destroy him. He reveals the entire narrative of alien invaders was a "necessary lie," a means to an end to secure his regeneration. Eldrad proudly declares his ambition to conquer the galaxy, starting with Kastria, and confronts a recorded message from Rokon, the former King. Rokon's message reveals that after Eldrad destroyed the planetary barriers, the Kastrian race chose "final oblivion" and destroyed their own race banks rather than live under his tyranny or face eternal war. Eldrad discovers the race banks empty, his grand vision of leading a new Kastrian empire shattered. Undeterred, he shifts his focus, declaring his intent to conquer Earth and demanding the Doctor transport him there, asserting his right to rule. The Doctor refuses, recognizing Eldrad's boundless and dangerous ambition.

Act 3

With Eldrad's galactic ambitions thwarted, he turns his focus to Earth, demanding the Doctor transport him there to rule its "primitive" people. The Doctor refuses, stating his obligation to Eldrad is complete. Eldrad then demands his ring, his "key to eternity." The Doctor, with a knowing glance at Sarah, feigns compliance, throwing a ring across the room into the Race Bank chamber. As Eldrad rushes to retrieve it, the Doctor and Sarah retreat to the abyss. They quickly set a tripwire, and when Eldrad follows, the Doctor gives the signal, tripping him. Eldrad falls into the abyss, seemingly defeated. The Doctor then reveals he gave Eldrad a mere "magician's stick" and still possesses the real ring, which he then tosses into the abyss himself, permanently disposing of Eldrad's power. Returning to the TARDIS, Sarah expresses her exhaustion with their dangerous travels and her desire to go home. The Doctor receives a mental "call from Gallifrey," confirming he must return to his home planet and cannot take Sarah with him. Sarah, initially thinking he is joking, accepts her departure with a mix of sadness and understanding. The Doctor lands the TARDIS, claiming to be in South Croydon, Hillview Road, Sarah's home. They share a poignant farewell, acknowledging their shared adventures and the bond they formed. As Sarah steps out, the TARDIS dematerializes, leaving her to discover that the Doctor, in his characteristic way, has landed her not on Hillview Road, but somewhere else entirely, a final, unpredictable twist to their journey together.
