The Robots of Death Part 1

A sandmining crew's hunt for valuable ore is disrupted by the presence of a humanoid robot that has gone haywire, leading to murder, mystery, and the unexpected arrival of the Doctor and Leela.

The screenplay 'The Robots of Death - Part One' unfolds on a desert planet where a sandmining machine, crewed by humans and operated by robots, is extracting valuable minerals. The crew is on high alert due to a storm, but their focus shifts when one of their own, Chub, is found strangled. As Commander Uvanov investigates the murder, the Doctor and Leela materialize in the sandminer's scoop deck, having landed inside the metal structure. The Doctor explains his TARDIS to Leela, showcasing its transdimensional capabilities. As Uvanov's crew searches for the murderer, they suspect one of their own, while the Doctor and Leela navigate the sandminer's corridors, encountering various robots. The crew believes the Doctor and Leela might be ore raiders or the murderers, leading to a tense confrontation. The episode builds tension as Uvanov's obsession with profit clashes with the need to uncover the truth behind Chub's death and the Doctor's presence.

Act 1

The narrative opens on a desolate planet, introducing the giant sandmining machine and its human crew, who are aided by numerous identical humanoid robots. The crew's banter reveals underlying anxieties about robot reliability, particularly through Chub's vivid story of a haywire Voc therapist robot. Commander Uvanov, driven by profit, prepares the crew for an approaching storm, emphasizing the importance of securing a valuable ore deposit. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Leela materialize inside the sandminer's scoop deck, their TARDIS having landed within the massive metal structure. The Doctor attempts to explain transdimensional engineering to a bewildered Leela, highlighting the TARDIS's unique properties. Their arrival is marked by confusion as they realize they are trapped within an alien environment. The first major turning point occurs when Chub, sent to retrieve an instrument pack, is confronted by robot V45, whose eyes glow ominously red. Chub's desperate screams are heard by Poul, signaling a violent encounter. Poul then discovers Chub's lifeless body, strangled, confirming the crew's worst fears about a rogue element on board. This incident shatters the routine of the sandminer, transforming a routine mining operation into a murder investigation and setting a tense, dangerous tone for the unfolding events. The initial setup establishes the environment, the characters' motivations, and the central conflict—a murder on a remote mining vessel—while also introducing the protagonists as unexpected, and soon to be implicated, outsiders.

Act 2

Following Chub's murder, Commander Uvanov initially dismisses the gravity of the situation, prioritizing the imminent sandstorm and the potential profit from the ore. His focus on financial gain clashes with the crew's shock and concern over their colleague's death. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Leela, now fully aware they are trapped inside the sandminer, find their TARDIS has been removed from the scoop deck, leaving them stranded and vulnerable as the sandstorm rages outside. Uvanov, having finally acknowledged the murder, examines Chub's body and discovers a peculiar red "corpse marker" disc, which Dask identifies as a robot deactivation disc, typically used in construction centers. This discovery adds a layer of mystery, suggesting a deliberate, almost ritualistic, act. Uvanov convenes the crew, immediately accusing one of them of the murder, fostering an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust among the small, isolated group. As the human crew grapples with internal accusations, the Doctor and Leela are discovered by the sandminer's robots. SV7, a silver robot who claims command, questions them about their presence in the scoop. This interaction marks a critical shift: Uvanov receives a report of "intruders" and, without any investigation, hastily concludes that the Doctor and Leela are the murderers. This decision diverts the investigation from the crew and places the blame squarely on the newly arrived protagonists, setting them up as immediate antagonists in the eyes of the sandminer's commander.

Act 3

The final act of Part One intensifies the conflict, transforming the Doctor and Leela into fugitives. After being questioned by SV7 and confined to a cabin, the Doctor, using his sonic screwdriver, opens the door, intent on finding the TARDIS and scouting their surroundings. This escape, however, is immediately reported to Uvanov. Upon hearing of their evasion, Uvanov's initial, unfounded accusation hardens into conviction. He dismisses any lingering doubts from his crew, such as Borg's questioning of the intruders' guilt or Zilda's suggestion that they might be ore raiders. Uvanov's singular focus on profit overrides any logical inquiry into the murder, as he views the Doctor and Leela's presence as a mere inconvenience to his mining operation. He asserts his authority, ordering the crew back to their posts and demanding that all spare robots be deployed to hunt down the escaped "murderers." This command effectively turns the entire robotic workforce of the sandminer against the Doctor and Leela. The act concludes with the Doctor and Leela on the run, facing not only the mystery of Chub's death but also the immediate threat of being captured or killed by the sandminer's robots, all while Uvanov remains stubbornly fixated on his financial objectives, oblivious to the deeper danger lurking within his own ship. The stage is set for a desperate struggle for survival and truth.
