Act 1

The narrative opens with Leela observing robots disposing of Chub's body, while the Doctor, hidden in an ore hopper, narrowly escapes processing. Commander Uvanov struggles to maintain control as crew members Cass and Borg defy his orders to search for the killers. The Doctor, upon emerging, discovers Kerril's body, leading to his immediate restraint by a robot under Uvanov's command. Simultaneously, Leela discovers Cass's lifeless form, marked with a distinctive red dot, and encounters the peculiar D84 robot, which, unusually, communicates and seeks her silence. Uvanov apprehends Leela, accusing her of the murders. Poul intervenes, revealing the Doctor's capture and the presence of robot deactivation discs on the victims, a detail Uvanov attempts to suppress. In the crew room, the Doctor and Leela face collective suspicion, with Borg aggressively accusing them. The Doctor asserts his innocence, suggesting a frame-up. Uvanov, asserting his authority, orders their imprisonment in the security storage. Borg's physical assault on the Doctor underscores the crew's escalating fear and hostility. As the Doctor and Leela are secured, Uvanov and Zilda's brief exchange reveals Uvanov's avarice and Zilda's contempt, setting a tense interpersonal dynamic. This act establishes the immediate threat to the protagonists, their wrongful accusation, and their subsequent containment, effectively concluding the initial phase of the murder investigation by neutralizing the primary 'suspects.'

Act 2

This act initiates with a pivotal revelation: a mysterious figure instructs a robot to target Zilda with a deactivation disc, confirming a human orchestrator behind the robot killings. Confined in security storage, the Doctor and Leela discuss their predicament, with the Doctor deducing the advanced locking mechanism of their restraints and contemplating the murderer's identity. Poul, defying Uvanov, enters the storage area and frees the Doctor and Leela, expressing his belief in their innocence and seeking their insight. The Doctor posits the radical theory of a robot killer, capable of bypassing its prime directive, a concept Poul initially dismisses as impossible. The trio proceeds to the storage locker, the site of the first murder, where the Doctor meticulously reconstructs Chub's final moments, testing his hypothesis about a robot's involvement. Concurrently, Zilda, alone in Uvanov's cabin, discovers incriminating evidence, leading her to broadcast a furious accusation against Uvanov over the ship's intercom. Uvanov rushes to his quarters, while Toos and Dask react to Zilda's desperate plea. Poul, alerted to Zilda's outburst, leaves the Doctor and Leela, who remain in the crew room, with the Doctor contemplating the catastrophic implications of a rogue robot for their civilization. This act pivots the investigation, freeing the protagonists to actively pursue the truth, while simultaneously raising the stakes with Zilda's dramatic accusation and the implied confirmation of a human-controlled robot threat.

Act 3

The act thrusts the narrative into a critical phase as Poul arrives at Uvanov's cabin, discovering Zilda's body, marked by a deactivation disc, confirming another murder. Poul confronts Uvanov, who claims Zilda was already dead, but Poul, convinced of Uvanov's culpability or at least his obstruction, swiftly incapacitates the Commander and relieves him of his command. This decisive action shifts the power dynamic on the Sandminer, placing Poul in a position of authority amidst the escalating crisis. Concurrently, back in the crew room, Leela senses a profound shift in the ship's stability, a premonition immediately validated as the Sandminer lurches violently, tilting dangerously over a cliff. The sudden, catastrophic malfunction of the motive units plunges the vessel into immediate peril, as reported by Toos from the Control Deck. With Borg missing and Dask having descended to investigate, the crew faces a dual threat: the unseen killer still at large and the imminent destruction of their ship. Poul, now in charge, descends to address the mechanical failure, leaving the incapacitated Uvanov under the guard of SV7. This act rapidly accelerates the plot, escalating both the internal conflict among the crew and the external threat to the ship, setting the stage for a desperate struggle for survival and the ultimate revelation of the killer. The protagonists are now in a race against time, with the ship itself becoming a major antagonist.
