The Ribos Operation Part 2

The Doctor and Romana navigate a relic room on Ribos, avoiding a Shrivenzale and thwarting a plot by Garron and Unstoffe to steal valuable jethrik and gold.

The Doctor and Romana find themselves in a relic room on the planet Ribos, where they encounter a dangerous creature called the Shrivenzale. The room is filled with various artifacts, including a valuable piece of jethrik. Garron, a merchant, and Unstoffe, a local, are trying to steal the jethrik and a large sum of gold. The Doctor and Romana must use their wits to outsmart Garron and Unstoffe, while also avoiding the Shrivenzale and the Captain of Shrievalty.

Act 1

The act opens with the Doctor and Romana narrowly escaping the dangerous Shrivenzale within the relic room. As they hide, the Captain of Shrievalty and a Shrieve secure the beast's pen, unaware of the intruders. The Doctor and Romana discuss the Shrivenzale and the perils of their situation, with the Doctor cautioning Romana against revealing their presence. Soon after, Garron, a cunning merchant, arrives and proposes to the Captain that he wishes to deposit a substantial sum of gold—over a million opeks—in the relic room for safekeeping, subtly offering a bribe. This interaction immediately establishes Garron's deceptive nature and the central heist plot. The Doctor and Romana, observing from a hidden vantage point, begin to suspect Garron's true intentions, with the Doctor even pondering if he might be an agent of the mysterious Black Guardian. Simultaneously, the audience is introduced to the Graff Vynda-K, a royal prince seeking to purchase the planet Ribos, and his advisor Sholakh, who are engaged in tense negotiations with Garron over the planet's sale price and mineral rights. The narrative then returns to the relic room where Unstoffe, disguised as a local Shrieve, performs a theatrical tale about "scringe stone" (jethrik) and a lost mine, complete with a fabricated map, to the Graff and Sholakh. The Doctor quickly discerns this elaborate con, recognizing the "scringe stone" as highly valuable jethrik and Unstoffe as Garron's accomplice. Romana, initially taken in by Unstoffe's "honest face," learns a crucial lesson about deception from the Doctor, solidifying their understanding of the antagonists' scheme. This act effectively sets the stage, introducing the key players, their motivations, and the primary conflict surrounding the jethrik and the gold.

Act 2

The second act intensifies the conflict as the Graff Vynda-K continues his negotiations with Garron, agreeing to an eight-million-opek deal for Ribos but demanding a one-million-opek deposit. Garron, ever the schemer, insists the deposit be lodged securely with the Captain of Shrievalty, which aligns with his ongoing heist plan. A crucial turning point occurs when the Graff discovers a hidden microphone in his quarters, immediately suspecting Garron of espionage. This revelation escalates the stakes, placing Garron under the Graff's watchful and potentially lethal scrutiny. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Romana, now fully aware of Garron and Unstoffe's criminal enterprise, discuss their strategy. The Doctor, ever the educator, challenges Romana to analyze the facts, reinforcing her role as a developing companion. In the castle courtyard, Garron vehemently chastises Unstoffe for his overly theatrical "scringe stone" performance, reminding him of the Graff's dangerous nature and the need for a swift, clean operation. Unstoffe, however, notices the Doctor, hinting at future complications. The Doctor and Romana then investigate the relic room roof, finding evidence of a grappling iron, which confirms Garron and Unstoffe's method of entry and their prior planting of the jethrik. The Doctor deduces their plan to return for both the jethrik and the deposited gold. Back in his quarters, the Graff, now fully suspicious, discusses the microphone and Unstoffe's "remarkable coincidence" story with Sholakh. Sholakh identifies the jethrik's immense value, confirming the Graff's suspicions about Garron's potential deceit. The Graff, a man of ruthless authority, orders Sholakh to monitor Garron, threatening him with death if he proves false. This significantly heightens the danger for the con artists. As curfew approaches, Garron, the Graff, and Sholakh return to the relic room. Garron deposits the million opeks, then cunningly palms the Captain's keys while obtaining a receipt. Unstoffe, on the roof, prepares to drug the Shrivenzale once more. The Doctor, observing these developments, makes the critical decision to intervene directly, resolving to get into the relic room before Garron and Unstoffe can complete their heist, setting the stage for the climax.

Act 3

The final act plunges directly into the climax of the heist. As curfew tolls, the Doctor initiates his plan to infiltrate the relic room. He attempts to tiptoe past a dozing Shrieve guard outside the room but is discovered. Thinking quickly, the Doctor uses his gold watch to hypnotize the Shrieve, rendering him unconscious and allowing the Doctor to proceed. Simultaneously, Unstoffe, having been sent down by Garron, executes his part of the plan. He crawls out of the Shrivenzale's pen, cuts through the display case glass to retrieve the valuable jethrik, and then unlocks the cabinet to seize the bag of a million gold opeks. The Doctor, having successfully bypassed the Shrieve, unbars the relic room door and enters, immediately noticing the open cabinet and the signs of the theft. Unstoffe, hidden behind a sword display, seizes the opportunity. As the Doctor enters, Unstoffe makes a dash for the door, barring it behind him to trap the Doctor inside the now-compromised relic room. Outside, the hypnotized Shrieve awakens from his trance and blows his whistle, raising the alarm. With no other immediate escape, the Doctor ducks into the Shrivenzale's pen, a dangerous and desperate maneuver. Moments later, the Doctor dramatically emerges from the shaft on the relic room roof, surprising Garron, who is anxiously awaiting Unstoffe. The Doctor, with Romana by his side, confronts Garron, declaring, "Don't move, we've got you covered." Garron, believing he has been apprehended by official authorities, holds out his hands for cuffs and offers to "come quietly." The Doctor, instead of arresting him, shakes his hand, a gesture that signifies his success in thwarting the immediate theft and exposing Garron's scheme, though not necessarily handing him over to Ribos authorities. The act concludes with Garron's capture, the jethrik and gold recovered (implied by the Doctor's actions), and the Doctor and Romana having successfully intervened in the criminal plot.
