Act 1

Graff and his general, Sholakh, navigate the treacherous catacombs, still determined to recover the valuable jethrik. After a close encounter with a shrivenzale, Sholakh suggests employing the Seeker, a native witch with a supposed gift for tracking fugitives. Graff, initially dismissive, agrees, recognizing the efficiency such a move would provide in his relentless pursuit. Meanwhile, Unstoffe and Binro find a moment of respite in the caves. Binro, captivated by the concept of space travel, expresses his thirst for knowledge. Unstoffe, however, remains preoccupied with Garron's disappearance, expressing concern for his long-time partner. He entrusts the jethrik to Binro for safekeeping. Binro, deeply touched by Unstoffe's trust and validation of his theories, volunteers to return to the dangerous city to search for Garron, risking his own life. Unstoffe provides Binro with his wrist communicator as a means of identification. Simultaneously, the Doctor, Romana, and Garron are also hiding from a shrivenzale. The Doctor, ever strategic, sends Romana and Garron, accompanied by K9, back towards the city entrance, instructing them to keep an eye on Vynda-K. He, however, chooses to remain behind, intending to directly observe Graff's movements and plans. This decision sets the stage for his direct involvement in the unfolding conflict. As Romana and K9 navigate the catacombs, Romana discovers Garron has stolen her tracer, a crucial piece of equipment. This act of betrayal by Garron further complicates the protagonists' situation, introducing an element of internal conflict and distrust amidst the external threat posed by Graff. The stage is now set for a direct confrontation, with all parties converging on the jethrik.

Act 2

The narrative intensifies as Graff, now accompanied by the Seeker, closes in on his quarry. The Doctor, having infiltrated the castle courtyard, witnesses Graff's ruthless nature firsthand as Graff executes a Shrieve for perceived discourtesy, demonstrating his volatile authority. The Doctor uses this distraction to move closer to Graff's quarters. Meanwhile, the Seeker, using her dowsing bones, leads Graff's bodyguards deeper into the catacombs. They soon encounter Binro, who is captured after Sholakh discovers Unstoffe's communicator in his possession. Binro, despite the danger, attempts to mislead Graff, but the Seeker's powers prove accurate. As the Graff's forces converge, Garron, having used the stolen tracer to find Unstoffe, reunites with him. Their reunion is short-lived, however, as the Graff's men, guided by the Seeker and Binro, arrive. Binro, seeing Unstoffe, bravely calls out, sacrificing himself. Graff orders his execution, and Binro dies in Unstoffe's arms, affirming his belief in Unstoffe's validation. Enraged, Unstoffe rushes Graff and is shot in the shoulder, collapsing. The situation escalates into chaos as the cave roof, unstable from ancient age, begins to collapse. Amidst the destruction, Unstoffe throws the jethrik bag towards Graff. Graff, believing he has secured his prize, orders the execution of Garron and the injured Unstoffe. However, the Doctor, disguised as a bodyguard, blows a dog whistle, summoning a shrivenzale that attacks Graff's men, creating a diversion. Simultaneously, the Captain, acting on Graff's earlier orders, fires a cannon into the catacombs entrance, causing massive rockfalls. Sholakh is fatally crushed, and Graff, after a moment of grief, retrieves the jethrik and vows vengeance. Garron and Unstoffe are trapped behind a new rockfall, seemingly doomed. Romana and K9, guided by K9's sensors, arrive at the rockfall. K9, using its laser, swiftly clears the debris, rescuing Garron and Unstoffe. Garron, feigning innocence, returns the tracer to Romana. This act concludes the immediate threat, but leaves the ultimate fate of the jethrik and Graff unresolved.

Act 3

In the climactic final act, the Graff, now isolated and increasingly unhinged by the loss of his men and the perceived betrayal, continues his retreat through the catacombs. He is accompanied by the Seeker and the Doctor, still disguised as a bodyguard. Graff, in a fit of rage and paranoia, silences the Seeker by killing her, rejecting her prophecies and asserting his own will. He then hands the Doctor a small, beeping box—a bomb—ordering him to sacrifice himself in the service of the Graff Vynda-K, sealing the caves behind them. The Graff, lost in delusions of past battles and calling out to his dead general Sholakh, rounds a corner, leaving the Doctor to his supposed fate. The Doctor calmly counts down the final seconds, and an explosion rings out, followed by a scream—Graff's demise. The Doctor removes his helmet, revealing his true identity, and holds aloft the genuine jethrik, confirming his successful deception. The Doctor, Romana, and K9 then make their way back to the TARDIS, where Garron and Unstoffe await. Garron, ever the opportunist, questions the Doctor about how he managed to switch the jethrik for the thermite pack without Graff noticing. The Doctor, with a knowing smile, attributes it to "sleight of hand." Garron then requests to handle the jethrik one last time, feigning sentimentality. He attempts a final double-cross, switching the jethrik for an ordinary stone while the Doctor is momentarily distracted, believing he has outsmarted the Time Lord. However, as the TARDIS dematerializes and Garron proudly reveals his "stolen" jethrik to Unstoffe, he discovers the Doctor anticipated his move. The Doctor had switched the jethrik back, leaving Garron with a mere stone. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor and Romana confirm the jethrik's true nature: it is the first segment of the Key to Time, now transformed into an inert, irregular section of hard perspex. The mission is accomplished, and the Doctor's superior intellect and foresight prevail, leaving Garron and Unstoffe to face the consequences of their failed schemes.
