The Doctor and his friends must navigate through the planet's defenses, including the Bridge, a fortress-like structure, and the mines of Zanak City. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including the Captain's robotic parrot and the Mentiads, a mysterious group with psychokinetic abilities. As they try to stop the Captain, they also discover that the planet is running out of resources and that the Captain's actions are motivated by a desire for power and control. The narrative beats that drive the story
This act opens with Captain Zanak's brutal display of authority on the Bridge, executing a crewman for perceived incompetence, establishing his ruthless nature and the high stakes involved. Simultaneously, the Doctor awakens, disoriented from a psychokinetic blast, and learns of Romana's arrest and Pralix's abduction by the Mentiads. He quickly formulates a plan, using a double-headed coin to prioritize Romana's rescue, which necessitates infiltrating the heavily guarded Bridge. While Mula, accompanied by K9, sets off to find Pralix and the Mentiads, the Doctor and Kimus commandeer an aircar, making their way towards the Captain's fortress. During their journey, the Doctor begins to unravel the mystery of Zanak, questioning the planet's seemingly infinite resources and the nature of its 'stars,' hinting at its true identity. On the Bridge, Romana, brought before the Captain, skillfully deflects his interrogation about time travel, subtly revealing her knowledge of the ship's critical macromat field integrator and hinting at the Doctor's superior expertise. The Doctor then dramatically arrives on the Bridge, bluffing his way into the Captain's presence and quickly diagnosing the ship's core mechanical failures. He and Romana are then directed to the engine room, where they confirm Zanak's identity as a colossal, resource-depleting spaceship. Realizing the immense scale of the Captain's galaxy-spanning crime, the Doctor attempts to bluff their escape, claiming a special TARDIS lock requires both their presence. Though initially successful in securing an escort, they soon escape the guards with Kimus's help. The Doctor, now armed with critical information and a new objective, decides to investigate the 'miraculous mines' of Zanak, leading the trio into the perilous depths of the planet, culminating in a dangerous descent as Captain Zanak orders their obliteration.
