Act 1

The Doctor and Romana navigate the ruins of K Block, evading guards after their initial escape. They encounter Merak, a surgeon desperately searching for his beloved Astra. The Doctor deduces Astra's disappearance links to the Marshal's desire to prolong the war, as Astra sought peace with the Zeons. K9, the Doctor's robot companion, aids their escape and helps breach a radiation-contaminated area where they find Astra's circlet, confirming her presence but not her current location. Deciding to confront the Marshal directly, the Doctor leads them back. The Marshal, observing their movements, orders K9 to be recycled, demonstrating a ruthless streak. Captured and brought before the Marshal, the Doctor observes his peculiar 'meditation' before the Marshal welcomes him, claiming his arrival was foretold. The Marshal tasks the Doctor with creating an ultimate weapon to win the war. The Doctor, ever the strategist, agrees to build a deterrent in exchange for assistance locating Astra. He then learns K9 has been sent to the recycling furnace. With characteristic ingenuity, the Doctor rushes into the hazardous furnace, performing a 'fire-walking' trick to retrieve the smoking, but otherwise intact, K9, much to the Marshal's surprise and apparent concern. This act establishes the immediate peril, introduces Merak's personal stake, and sets up the Doctor's reluctant engagement with the Marshal's war efforts, while subtly hinting at deeper machinations.

Act 2

With K9 recovered, the Doctor proposes a 'psychological barrier' as a deterrent against the Zeons, requiring a Zeon subject for study. The Marshal dismisses the idea, stating no Zeon prisoners exist due to their 'war to the death' ethos. Romana, however, grows suspicious, revealing the Marshal's peculiar reaction to the Doctor's near-death in the furnace—stating the Doctor 'must not die, not yet'—and observing a hidden control device at his throat. This observation confirms the Doctor's growing suspicion: the Marshal is a puppet, controlled by an unseen entity. The Doctor then deduces that Princess Astra is likely on Zeos, a planet hidden from their sight, possibly by a camouflage or energy-absorbing field. As the Zeon attack intensifies, decimating Atrios's remaining fleet, the Marshal becomes increasingly desperate for the Doctor's promised weapon. A shocking broadcast from Astra appears on the viewscreen, urging the people of Atrios to surrender and hand over the Marshal, revealing her captivity on Zeos. Despite the apparent betrayal, the Marshal, under duress, grants the Doctor permission to travel to Zeos, revealing a secret transmat link. Concurrently, Romana and Merak investigate the Marshal's mirror alcove, discovering it to be a two-way mirror. They overhear the Marshal speaking to an unseen 'lord,' confirming his subservience and revealing a meticulously planned trap for the Doctor at the transmat point in K Block, where 'agents will be waiting.' This act dramatically shifts the narrative focus from immediate survival to uncovering a deep-seated conspiracy, revealing the Marshal's true nature as a controlled pawn and setting the stage for the Doctor's perilous journey.

Act 3

Despite Romana and Merak's urgent discovery of the Marshal's trap, the Doctor proceeds towards the transmat point in K Block, seemingly oblivious or perhaps resigned to the unfolding deception. K9 attempts to warn his master, but the Doctor, asserting his authority, dismisses the robot's caution. He steps confidently into the transmat chamber, bidding K9 farewell. Immediately, two masked figures materialize behind him, their presence confirming the trap Romana and Merak overheard. Romana rushes into K Block, her desperate cries of 'Doctor! Doctor, wait!' echoing too late as the transmat door seals, activating the device. The masked figures seize the Doctor, and the transmat beam activates, transporting them away. This climactic sequence marks a significant turning point, as the Doctor, the protagonist, is deliberately led into and falls victim to a calculated ambush. His capture by unknown agents, orchestrated by the unseen 'lord' controlling the Marshal, leaves Romana and K9 stranded and the Doctor's fate uncertain. The act concludes with the Doctor's forced departure, establishing a clear cliffhanger and propelling the narrative into the next phase of his mission to uncover the truth behind the Zeon war and rescue Princess Astra. The immediate threat shifts from the Zeon conflict to the sinister machinations of the Marshal's puppet master, highlighting the Doctor's vulnerability and the depth of the conspiracy.
