Act 1

The Doctor, Romana, and Astra arrive at the Shadow's lair, intent on securing the final piece of the Key to Time. Romana expresses concern over the fragile time loop protecting Zeos and Atrios, which relies on the Key's current configuration. The Doctor attempts to engage Astra, but her behavior is erratic, revealing she is under the Shadow's control, tasked with luring Romana. The Doctor detects an intergalactic distress signal, prompting him to leave the TARDIS alone. K9, also under the Shadow's influence, is dispatched to follow the Doctor. As the Doctor navigates the tunnels, he encounters illusions and realizes the Shadow's strategy to divide them. He confronts the Shadow's projected image, asserting his identity as a Time Lord sent by the White Guardian. The Shadow counters, revealing his service to the Black Guardian and his anticipation of the Doctor's arrival. The Doctor falls into a trap, captured by the Shadow's forces. Concurrently, Astra leads Romana into a hidden passage, where Romana is captured by a minion, completing the Shadow's initial plan to isolate and secure his adversaries.

Act 2

The Doctor awakens in a cell, discovering the distress beacon that lured K9. A section of the wall opens, revealing Drax, an old classmate from Gallifrey. Drax, a skilled but roguish technician, explains he was forced by the Shadow to install the Mentalis computer on Zeos and has been imprisoned for five years. He reveals he has a broken TARDIS and has been attempting to escape. Meanwhile, the Shadow begins torturing Romana in an interrogation booth, seeking information about the Key to Time. Romana steadfastly refuses to betray the Doctor, enduring the pain. The Shadow, frustrated by Romana's resilience, decides to use her as leverage against the Doctor, sending K9 with a message. K9, still under the Shadow's control, delivers the ultimatum: the Key to Time for Romana's life. The Doctor, feigning consideration, pushes K9 into Drax's cell, instructing Drax to remove K9's control device. As the Doctor attempts to explore another tunnel, he is again captured by the Shadow's minions, leaving Drax and the now-liberated K9 to their own devices in the cell.

Act 3

Freed from the Shadow's influence, K9 assists Drax in repairing the distress beacon, confirming the Doctor's earlier diagnosis of synaptic adhesion. In the Shadow's lair, the Doctor confronts his captor, refusing to negotiate while Romana is threatened. Romana, despite her suffering, urges the Doctor not to surrender the Key. The Doctor questions the Shadow's ultimate purpose for the Key to Time. The Shadow, in a chilling revelation, declares his allegiance to the Black Guardian and his intention to use the Key not for power, but for universal destruction, setting the entire cosmos at war. He mocks the Doctor's "puny" time loop, confirming his goal to annihilate millions on Zeos and Atrios as a mere rehearsal for a grander design. Faced with this genocidal ambition, the Doctor seemingly agrees to retrieve the Key. As the Shadow gloats and Romana pleads with the Doctor not to comply, the Shadow removes the control device from Astra's throat, freeing her from his thrall. Drax, having completed the repairs, discreetly follows the Doctor and his escort, now fully aligned with the Doctor's cause and ready to act.
