Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Drax in a precarious state, shrunken to miniature size outside the vulnerable, open TARDIS. They evade the Shadow's minion, discussing the imminent threat: the Shadow's acquisition of the Key to Time, the escalating Mentalis countdown, and the Marshal's destructive time loop. On Atrios, the injured Shapp and Merak search for a solution, with Merak pinpointing Astra's genetic records as the potential location of the sixth Key segment. The Shadow, convinced of his impending victory, prepares to seize the Key. Inside his lair, Romana attempts to persuade Astra to escape, but Astra, guided by a deep, internal conviction, declares her destiny lies in this place, revealing her identity as the sixth princess of the sixth dynasty. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Drax formulate a plan to infiltrate the Shadow's lair using K9. The Shadow successfully retrieves a fake Key from the TARDIS, oblivious to its true nature, and Romana, observing Astra, finally deduces Astra's direct connection to the missing sixth segment, elevating the stakes significantly. This initial act establishes the immediate dangers, introduces the core mystery of the sixth segment, and sets the stage for the direct confrontation with the Shadow. The Doctor and Drax are at a disadvantage, the universe is on the brink, and Astra's true role becomes terrifyingly clear, driving the narrative towards a desperate counter-move.

Act 2

Act Two intensifies the desperate race against time and the Shadow. Merak, having analyzed Astra's records, makes a horrifying discovery: Astra's every living cell constitutes the sixth segment of the Key to Time, implying her destruction is necessary to save the universe. Driven by this grim truth, Merak departs to find her. Concurrently, the Doctor and Drax activate their audacious counter-plan, preparing K9 to serve as a Trojan horse. Inside the Shadow's lair, Astra, embracing her fate, transforms into the final segment of the Key. K9 then blasts through the wall, disrupting the Shadow's moment of triumph, and the Doctor and Drax emerge from K9's side. A direct confrontation ensues, with the Doctor using the Key's inherent light to repel the Shadow. They make a hasty escape towards the TARDIS, but Merak, consumed by his desire to save Astra, refuses to enter, remaining behind in the perilous lair. Romana expresses profound distress over Astra's transformation and Merak's apparent sacrifice, questioning their role in the Guardian's machinations. Despite her anguish, the Doctor insists on their immediate departure to Zeos, where the time loop's countdown approaches its critical zero, threatening widespread destruction. The act culminates in their arrival at Zeos, where the Doctor, guided by Drax, cuts the precise wire, narrowly averting the planet's annihilation and momentarily stabilizing the immediate crisis.

Act 3

With the immediate threat to Zeos neutralized, the narrative shifts to resolving the broader conflicts and confronting the ultimate antagonist. The Marshal's missiles, previously aimed at Zeos, are revealed to have been harmlessly deflected by the Doctor's quick thinking, striking the Shadow's satellite instead, thus eliminating the Shadow's base of operations. Drax, having fulfilled his role, departs, revealing a surprising new business partnership with the now-unemployed Marshal. Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor experiences a moment of profound temptation, exhibiting a maniacal desire to wield the Key to Time's absolute power, a chilling display that alarms Romana. This internal struggle is interrupted by the appearance of the Guardian on the scanner, demanding the assembled Key. The Doctor, however, discerns the Guardian's true identity as the malevolent Black Guardian, recognizing his callous disregard for Astra's life as a segment. In a final, decisive act of defiance, the Doctor refuses to surrender the Key, activating the TARDIS's defenses. He then strategically snaps the tracer, dispersing the Key's components across time and space, simultaneously restoring Astra to her human form. Astra and Merak joyfully reunite in a hospital ward, their personal ordeal finally over. The Doctor, to evade the Black Guardian's relentless pursuit, installs a "randomiser" onto the TARDIS's guidance system, ensuring their future journeys are unpredictable. The episode concludes with the Doctor and Romana embarking on an unknown path, having successfully thwarted the Black Guardian's plan and secured the universe's balance, albeit at the cost of predictable travel.
