Nightmare of Eden Part 3

The Doctor and Romana must navigate a deadly alien environment, stop a smuggling operation, and save passengers on a spaceship from monstrous creatures escaping a dimensional projection.

The Doctor and Romana find themselves trapped in a dimensional projection on a spaceship called the Empress, where they must survive against hostile alien creatures. As they explore the projection, they meet Stott, a stranded Intelligence officer who has been investigating a smuggling operation. Together, they uncover a plot involving a dangerous substance called Vraxoin. The Doctor devises a plan to separate the ships and stabilize the projection, while Stott and Romana work to activate the dematerialization machine. Meanwhile, the ship's crew, led by Fisk, are dealing with the chaos caused by the creatures escaping from the projection. The Doctor successfully rigs the power unit to separate the ships, and with the help of his companions, manages to stop the smuggling operation and save the passengers.

Act 1

The Doctor and Romana enter the Eden projection, immediately confronting its hostile environment, including a roaring creature and a giant Venus flytrap that ensnares them. They escape, and the Doctor explains the projection's nature: a relative dimensional field recorded on laser crystal, restructured on an intradimensional matrix, which, due to a faulty dimensional osmosis damper, allows anything to move freely between the projection and the Empress. This revelation highlights the imminent danger of creatures escaping into the ship. Meanwhile, on the Empress, Fisk, Costa, and Dymond search for the Doctor, whom Fisk believes to be a criminal. Tryst, the CET machine's inventor, expresses concern for the Doctor's genius, while Fisk dismisses him. Back in Eden, a Mandrel attacks the Doctor and Romana, but Stott, a stranded Intelligence Major, intervenes, saving them. Stott reveals he has been trapped in Eden for 183 days, investigating a Vraxoin smuggling operation. He explains that Tryst's expedition was unknowingly used to transport the drug, stored on crystal within the CET machine to avoid detection. Stott also confirms his ability to move between the projection and the Empress. The Doctor, now understanding the full scope of the problem, decides their immediate priority is to separate the ships and seal off the projection. He deduces the power unit's location relative to their current position in Eden, and they set off with Stott to begin the process, establishing the immediate threats, the criminal plot, and the primary objective for the protagonists.

Act 2

Romana, the Doctor, and Stott arrive at the power unit, where K9 awaits. The Doctor immediately begins working to separate the ships, using a toothpick to jam a crucial switch, demonstrating his unconventional methods. K9 reports encountering five Mandrels, prompting the Doctor to prioritize the separation before the creatures overrun the ship, likening the futile effort of fighting them prematurely to bailing a sieve. Simultaneously, the situation on the Empress deteriorates rapidly. Mandrels escape the projection, attacking and killing helpless passengers in the corridors. Captain Rigg displays shocking indifference to the carnage, viewing the victims as 'only economy class,' leading Costa to arrest him for gross neglect of duty. Fisk assumes command, ordering the crew to seal off and destroy the Mandrels, rejecting Tryst's plea for conservation and suggesting tranquilizers. Fisk further escalates the conflict by issuing a 'shoot to kill' order against the Doctor if he resists arrest, cementing his adversarial role. Back in the power unit, a Mandrel attacks the Doctor, but K9 intervenes, saving him. Stott reports Mandrels approaching from both directions, intensifying the pressure on the Doctor. Romana double-checks the reactor cable, narrowly preventing a spectacular explosion. With the power unit nearly ready, the Doctor outlines his final plan: Romana, Stott, and K9 must return to the TARDIS, activate the dematerialization machine simultaneously with his activation of the power unit, while Fisk's crew actively hunts them. The Doctor gives them a specific time window and sends them off, intending to rig a time device for his own escape, relying solely on his wits against the remaining Mandrels.

Act 3

With the Doctor alone in the power unit, working against the clock, Romana, Stott, and K9 face their own perilous journey back through the Eden projection. They encounter another Mandrel, which Stott shoots, allowing them to escape. K9, demonstrating determination, prepares to enter the blurred zone of the interface. Romana, showing bravery, volunteers to face the excisemen alone to guide the Doctor, sending Stott back into the projection to assist him. In the power unit, the Doctor, racing against time (20:16), is nearly attacked by the supposedly 'dead' Mandrel, which stirs back to life. He narrowly evades it, using a gap between control units, and completes his work, activating a countdown timer. The Mandrel, attracted by the ticking, smashes the timer, causing a flash and bang that finally kills it, revealing its crumbling form to be Vraxoin. This discovery provides a crucial piece of the puzzle, confirming the Mandrels are manifestations of the dangerous drug itself. Meanwhile, Romana, navigating the Empress, overhears Fisk and Costa discussing the casualties and their cynical plan to frame the Doctor and her as 'tailor-made suspects' for the crisis, hoping for promotion. She learns Fisk planted Vrax in the Doctor's pocket to incriminate him. Romana then proceeds cautiously towards the bridge. K9 reaches the TARDIS, ready to activate the dematerialization machine. The Doctor, back in the power unit, struggles to repair the damaged controls, realizing he is running out of time (20:21) to escape before the power unit activates, leaving his fate uncertain as the narrative concludes.
