Nightmare of Eden Part 4

When the Doctor and Romana investigate the Eden Project, they uncover a sinister plot involving the smuggling of a deadly substance called Vraxoin, and must stop the villains before it's too late.

The Doctor, Romana, and their companions arrive at the Eden Project, a conservation effort that has gone awry. They soon discover that the project's leader, Tryst, and his accomplice, Dymond, are secretly smuggling Vraxoin, a substance derived from the mandrels on the planet. The Vraxoin is highly addictive and deadly, and Tryst and Dymond plan to use it to fund their research. The Doctor and Romana must navigate the complex web of intrigue, stop the smugglers, and prevent the Vraxoin from causing harm to millions of people. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including mandrels, Excisemen, and the unstable CET machine. The Doctor uses his ingenuity and cunning to outwit the villains, and ultimately, he and Romana succeed in stopping Tryst and Dymond, and dismantling the CET machine. The mandrels are returned to their natural habitat, and the Vraxoin is neutralized.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the immediate aftermath of the ships' separation, leaving Romana disoriented on the Empress while the Doctor is mysteriously absent. Romana quickly regains her composure, disarms Fisk, and begins her search for the Doctor with K9's assistance, only to discover he is not aboard their ship. Simultaneously, the Doctor awakens on the Hecate, having been caught in the interface during the separation. He quickly deduces Tryst's illicit Vraxoin operation by observing Dymond's activities and the substantial profits generated from the "Eden Project." The Doctor cleverly stows away on Dymond's shuttle, returning to the Empress. During this time, Romana encounters Della, who recounts a harrowing experience with Stott, revealing his strange behavior before a mandrel attack. Romana then shocks Della by revealing Stott is alive, prompting Della to seek his whereabouts. On the Empress bridge, Fisk and Tryst discuss the Doctor's disappearance, with Tryst falsely suggesting the Doctor entered the CET projection to retrieve Vraxoin, a theory Fisk readily accepts as it aligns with his view of the Doctor as a criminal. This act culminates in the Doctor's return to the Empress, where he reunites with Romana, K9, and Della. He quickly shares his findings: Dymond possesses a CET projection machine with an inchuka laser on the Hecate, confirming Tryst and Dymond as the Vraxoin smugglers. This revelation sets the stage for the final confrontation, providing the necessary intelligence for the heroes to formulate their strategy.

Act 2

With the smugglers identified, the Doctor and Romana are immediately thrust into action, though their path is fraught with danger. They are ambushed by armed crewmen, but K9's quick intervention allows the Doctor and Romana to escape. Stott, alive and well, emerges, fighting off a mandrel, and the Doctor briefs him on the identity of the Vraxoin smugglers: Dymond as the pick-up man and Tryst as the mastermind, with the Vraxoin derived from mandrels and stored on the Eden crystal. The Doctor outlines his initial plan to catch them in the act of transferring the Vraxoin via the inchuka laser. However, events rapidly escalate. Della confronts Tryst on the Empress bridge, accusing him of smuggling. Tryst, caught off guard, confesses his involvement, attempting to justify his actions as necessary to fund his research, despite the devastating human cost of Vraxoin addiction. Dymond arrives, and a mandrel enters, creating chaos. Tryst and Dymond seize the opportunity to escape, with Tryst deliberately destroying the ship's communication console to prevent pursuit. Della is shot by Dymond during their escape, prompting Romana and K9 to give chase. Fisk, realizing the true nature of the situation, cancels his order for the Doctor's arrest and directs all personnel to apprehend Tryst and Dymond. Learning of the destroyed communications, the Doctor devises a desperate new plan: to stabilize the CET machine and use the mandrels as bait to lure Dymond back. The act culminates in the perilous task of herding the aggressive mandrels into the CET lounge, with the Doctor bravely leading them into the unstable Eden projection, a high-stakes gamble to bring the villains to justice.

Act 3

The final act plunges directly into the climax, with the Doctor trapped within the volatile Eden projection, his screams echoing as foliage flies out, and he emerges, his coat shredded, a testament to the danger. Romana, against Fisk's initial impulse to shut down the machine, is tasked by the Doctor with the seemingly impossible: to rebuild the CET machine in under three minutes. With surgical precision and K9's power supply, Romana races against time to reconfigure the complex device. Meanwhile, on the Hecate, Tryst and Dymond prepare to execute their Vraxoin transfer, confident in their escape after disabling the Empress's communications. As the laser beam hits the CET, signifying the transfer's completion, Tryst and Dymond believe they have succeeded. However, the Doctor, having Romana reverse the transmutation reflex and using K9 to pinpoint the Hecate's position, activates the newly modified CET. With a shimmering effect, the Doctor's ingenious plan comes to fruition: he uses the CET's amplified range and power to pull the Hecate – and with it, Tryst and Dymond – back into the Empress's projection field. Fisk and his crew, initially bewildered, are instructed to "pluck" the now-materialized smugglers from the projection. Tryst attempts to appeal to the Doctor, citing his research as justification, but the Doctor dismisses him with cold finality. The resolution sees Della recovering from her wound, and the Doctor, Romana, and Stott discussing the aftermath. The Doctor confirms the Vraxoin is still contained within the Eden crystal. Romana proposes using the TARDIS's superior technology to project the trapped creatures back to their home planets, dismantling the CET machine permanently. The narrative concludes with the Doctor reflecting on the mandrels' right to exist and the hope that the Vraxoin secret remains undiscovered, while Romana and K9 share a knowing glance about the true "nightmare" of Eden.
