Meglos Part 3

When the Doctor's doppelganger, Meglos, emerges, the Doctor must clear his name and prevent a catastrophic energy crisis on a planet dependent on the powerful Dodecahedron, while Romana navigates treacherous jungle terrain and confronts her captors.

The Doctor arrives on a planet where the Dodecahedron, a crucial energy source, has mysteriously disappeared. The inhabitants, led by Lexa and Zastor, are in a state of panic as the city's power dwindles. The Doctor soon discovers that his doppelganger, Meglos, a being from the dead planet Zolfa-Thura, has taken his place. Meglos, with his ability to transform and manipulate his form, infiltrates the city and orchestrates events to claim the Dodecahedron. Meanwhile, Romana, a companion of the Doctor, finds herself captured by a group of Gaztaks led by Grugger in the jungle. As the Doctor tries to unravel the mystery and clear his name, he faces opposition from Lexa, who intends to use him as a sacrifice to restore the Dodecahedron. The Doctor's efforts are further complicated by Meglos's manipulation of events and his ultimate plan to use the Dodecahedron for his own purposes. The narrative weaves through themes of identity, power, and deception as the Doctor, Romana, and their allies navigate the complex web of intrigue on the planet.

Act 1

The narrative opens with Romana, captured by Grugger and Brotadac in the dense jungle, attempting to mislead her captors while searching for her ship. Her efforts are complicated by the planet's peculiar anti-clockwise rotation, which she uses to her advantage. Meanwhile, within the city, a severe energy crisis unfolds as the Dodecahedron, the civilization's power source, has vanished. Deedrix and Caris, two savants, grapple with the incomprehensible disappearance, noting the Doctor's brief presence in the Power Room. The Doctor is confronted by Lexa and Zastor, leaders of the Tigellan people, who accuse him of theft. He vehemently denies involvement, struggling to understand the situation while the city's power dwindles, threatening total collapse within two hours. The Doctor theorizes about "chronic hysteresis" or a "doppelganger," a suggestion Lexa dismisses as a lie, though Zastor remains open to investigation. Concurrently, Meglos, the Doctor's doppelganger, experiences an internal struggle with the "Earthling" he has absorbed, hinting at his true, manipulative nature. He then reveals his true identity as the last Zolfa-Thuran to Caris, coercing her with an "impossible" display, securing her unwitting assistance in his grand scheme. This act establishes the critical stakes: the city's imminent collapse, the Doctor's wrongful accusation and growing danger, Romana's perilous situation, and Meglos's sinister plan beginning to unfold with a new accomplice. The stage is set for escalating conflict as Lexa prepares her own drastic measures.

Act 2

This act plunges the city into political turmoil and heightens the stakes for all protagonists. Lexa, driven by her faith and the urgent energy crisis, stages a coup in the Power Room, dismissing Zastor and Deedrix as non-believers and exiling them to the lethal surface. She then condemns the Doctor, tying him down for a ritual sacrifice, believing his life will appease the god and restore the Dodecahedron. Simultaneously, Romana, having momentarily escaped Grugger and his Gaztaks by using the jungle's dangerous bell plants, races towards the city. She finds the incapacitated K9 and barely makes it through the closing city gates, only to find herself trapped between the outer and inner doors as Grugger's men attempt to breach the entrance. Inside the city, Meglos, still disguised as the Doctor but struggling with the Earthling's influence, is revealed in his spiny form to Caris. Caris, horrified, confronts him with a thermal lance, briefly taking him captive. As the Gaztaks batter through the outer city door, Romana escapes the entrance area, mistaking Meglos for the real Doctor and attacking Caris to retrieve the thermal lance. Meglos and the Gaztaks then leave the city. Romana and Caris quickly realize the deception, understanding the "Doctor" they encountered was Meglos. The climax of Meglos's immediate plan unfolds as he presents a small Dodecahedron to Grugger, confirming his success, and they depart in the Gaztak spacecraft for Zolfa-Thura. The act concludes with the Doctor still tied for sacrifice, unaware of Meglos's escape, as the city descends further into chaos.

Act 3

The final act of this segment swiftly moves towards the immediate aftermath of Meglos's escape and the Doctor's predicament. An urgent announcement echoes through the city: "The Doctor has escaped." This crucial piece of information immediately resolves the life-threatening situation the Doctor faced, freeing him from Lexa's planned sacrifice. Following this revelation, Romana and Caris, who have just realized the "Doctor" they encountered was an impostor, confirm the true identity of Meglos. Their previous confusion and actions are clarified by this understanding. With Meglos now successfully departed in the Gaztak spacecraft, carrying what appears to be a Dodecahedron, the immediate threat of the doppelganger is gone, but the larger mystery remains. Romana, now reunited with Caris and understanding the gravity of the deception, shifts her focus. She asks Caris about the real Doctor's whereabouts, confirming his presence within the city. The act concludes with Romana and Caris setting out on a new mission: to locate the actual Doctor amidst the city's disarray, setting the stage for the continuation of the overarching narrative and the eventual confrontation with Meglos. The immediate crisis of the doppelganger is resolved, but the quest for the Dodecahedron and the real Doctor begins anew.
