Act 1

Melkur, posing as the new Keeper, consolidates power on Traken, confining the Consuls and asserting his authority. The Doctor immediately identifies Melkur as a threat, suspecting a past connection, and begins to formulate a counter-plan with Consul Tremas. Their strategy involves using the master plans of the Source Manipulator to bypass its security. Simultaneously, Adric and Nyssa, trapped in the TARDIS, discover that Melkur's structure resembles the TARDIS and can be destroyed by overloading the Source itself. Melkur, sensing their efforts, destroys the physical plans for the Source Manipulator. However, the Doctor and Tremas manage to secure a Consular ring, a crucial component for accessing the Source's control panel. They then infiltrate the Sanctum, racing against time as Melkur's power continues to grow, while Adric and Nyssa finalize their sabotage of the Source Manipulator, preparing for a desperate last resort. This act establishes the immediate peril, the Doctor's initial strategic moves, and the parallel efforts of his companions, setting the stage for a direct confrontation.

Act 2

The Doctor attempts to key in the final digits of the sanction program to neutralize Melkur, but Melkur materializes, having achieved full control of the Source. The control panel explodes, disrupting the Doctor's efforts. Melkur demonstrates his absolute power by forcing Tremas to execute Proctor Neman, then attempts to compel Tremas to commit suicide, showcasing his total dominance over the Consuls. This moment underscores the gravity of Melkur's power and the Doctor's apparent defeat. Simultaneously, Adric and Nyssa activate their sabotaged Source Manipulator, causing the Source's energy flow to reverse. This reversal directly impacts Melkur, who is revealed to be the Master. The Master, now fully empowered, captures the Doctor within his TARDIS, which is disguised as Melkur. He outlines his plan to transfer the Doctor's mind into his own and use the Doctor's body for his twelfth regeneration, signifying a complete victory and a dire fate for the Doctor.

Act 3

The Source's energy reversal causes the Master immense pain, disrupting his plans for the Doctor's mind and body. This allows the Doctor to escape the Master's TARDIS. Amidst the chaos of the destabilized Source, the Doctor races to the control panel, guiding Adric to input the final code to cancel the sabotage and stabilize the Source. With the Source stabilized, the Master's immediate threat is neutralized, and the Doctor declares the resident Keeper defeated. The Source, however, is failing, necessitating a new Keeper. Luvic steps forward, accepting the responsibility and becoming the new Keeper of Traken, ensuring the continuation of their tradition. The Doctor, Adric, and Nyssa prepare to depart, their mission seemingly accomplished. However, in a final, chilling twist, the Master, having escaped his damaged TARDIS, ambushes Tremas, possessing his body and transforming him into his new physical form. The Master's escape and new incarnation establish him as a continued, potent threat, leaving Nyssa distraught and setting the stage for future conflict.
