They later find themselves on the River Thames and then get transported to Logopolis, where they encounter the Monitor and the Logopolitans. The Doctor seeks help from the Logopolitans to fix his Tardis, and in return, he helps them with their computations. The narrative beats that drive the story
The Doctor and Adric evade capture by local authorities following the Master's initial machinations. At a Barnet lay-by, the Doctor attempts to explain the Master's threat to a skeptical detective. Adric creates a diversion, allowing them to escape into the TARDIS. Inside, the Cloister Bell tolls, signaling an emergency. The TARDIS proves sluggish, prompting the Doctor to jettison Romana's room for power. Meanwhile, the detective discovers the TARDIS has dematerialized, leaving behind only an ordinary police box. The Doctor deduces the Master has possessed Tremas and now commands a second TARDIS. To flush out the Master, the Doctor attempts a partial underwater materialization, aiming for the River Thames. The TARDIS instead lands neatly on Cadogan Pier. A pale figure, the Watcher, appears on Albert Bridge, directly observing them. The Doctor recognizes this as the Master's presence and prepares for a confrontation, while Tegan, a newly arrived passenger, remains disoriented within the TARDIS's labyrinthine corridors, her presence adding an unexpected complication to the unfolding crisis.

The Doctor, sensing a profound and imminent threat, decides they must travel to Logopolis. He cryptically informs Adric they will part ways, unsettling the young companion. As the TARDIS prepares for departure, Tegan bursts into the console room, demanding explanations for her predicament. The TARDIS then materializes over Logopolis, a world of elegant, silver-haired inhabitants dedicated to complex computations. The Monitor, a leading Logopolitan, greets the Doctor, who immediately seeks their help to repair his TARDIS's chameleon circuit. The Monitor introduces the concept of 'block transfer computation,' a sophisticated mathematical discipline performed by the Logopolitans using abacuses, far beyond the capabilities of machines. During their discussions, the Master's TARDIS, disguised as a fig tree, repeatedly materializes and dematerializes, causing minor disturbances and signaling his continued, insidious presence. The Monitor then reveals Logopolis's true, astonishing capability: they can mathematically model the Pharos Project and, by extension, any space-time event in the universe, hinting at a power that could either save or shatter existence, raising the stakes to a cosmic level.
