Castrovalva Part 3

The Doctor, recovering from a near-regeneration, must navigate the labyrinthine town of Castrovalva to uncover its secrets and escape with his companions Tegan and Nyssa, while also protecting a vulnerable Adric from the sinister Master.

The Doctor, severely weakened and near regeneration, finds himself in Castrovalva, a mysterious and isolated town with a unique, cyclical nature. Tegan and Nyssa search for him, navigating treacherous cliffs and encountering the town's inhabitants, who seem obsessed with bodily inertia and reading. The Doctor meets Shardovan, the town's librarian, and the Portreeve, an elderly, wise figure who seems to possess great knowledge. As the Doctor recuperates, Nyssa and Tegan try to find a way to help Adric, who is being controlled by the Master. The Doctor eventually discovers that Castrovalva is folding in on itself, creating a complex spatial disturbance. With the help of his companions, the Doctor must escape the town before it's too late, while also ensuring Adric's safety and thwarting the Master's plans.

Act 1

The narrative opens with Tegan and Nyssa following a blood trail, a grim indicator of the Doctor's recent near-regeneration trauma. They discover the Doctor attempting to scale treacherous cliffs, a testament to his weakened state. Their reunion is cut short by the sudden appearance of plumed warriors, who quickly capture the Doctor. He is brought into the mysterious town of Castrovalva, a place seemingly obsessed with 'bodily inertia' and reading. Here, the Doctor encounters Shardovan, the librarian, and the imposing figures of Mergrave and Ruther. Disoriented and uncertain of his own identity, the Doctor begins a slow recovery, his wits gradually returning amidst the town's peculiar customs. He meets the Portreeve, an ancient, wise figure who encourages rest and hints at a deeper understanding of the Doctor's situation. Meanwhile, Tegan and Nyssa, having struggled up the cliffs, are also brought into Castrovalva, witnessing the Doctor's recuperative sleep from a distance. This initial act establishes the Doctor's extreme vulnerability and the enigmatic, potentially benevolent, nature of Castrovalva, while also setting the stage for the companions' urgent need to protect him. The town's isolation and the inhabitants' strange behaviors create an atmosphere of subtle unease, masking a deeper, unseen threat.

Act 2

The second act intensifies the narrative by revealing the true nature of Castrovalva as a carefully constructed trap orchestrated by the Master. Nyssa discovers Adric's spectral presence in a mirror, where he, under the Master's control, delivers a crucial warning: the Doctor must remain in Castrovalva until his regeneration is complete, and Nyssa must not reveal Adric's appearance to anyone. This revelation immediately elevates the stakes, shifting the primary objective from merely aiding the Doctor's recovery to understanding and escaping a deliberate confinement. The Master, from his TARDIS, confirms Adric's successful impersonation, underscoring the insidious depth of his plan. During breakfast with the Portreeve, the Doctor, Tegan, and Nyssa witness a fascinating demonstration: a tapestry that visually reflects real-time events. The Portreeve subtly probes the Doctor about his companions, planting the seed of doubt about Adric's absence. A chance encounter with a child counting then triggers the Doctor's memory, bringing Adric's name to his lips. Confronted by the Doctor, Nyssa, despite Adric's warning, confesses what she saw. This admission galvanizes the Doctor, who, now fully aware of Adric's predicament and the Master's involvement, resolves to leave Castrovalva immediately to rescue his missing companion and confront the hidden enemy.

Act 3

The final act of this segment plunges the Doctor and his companions into the immediate, physical manifestation of Castrovalva's deception. As they attempt to depart, the town's architecture becomes a labyrinthine trap. Streets and stairways that should lead out instead fold back upon themselves, repeatedly returning them to the same central square. This impossible geometry, observed by Nyssa as 'space folded in on itself,' reveals Castrovalva not as a passive sanctuary but as an active, malevolent entity. The Doctor quickly grasps the gravity of the situation, realizing Castrovalva is 'folding in on itself deliberately,' a conscious mechanism designed to imprison him. The physical strain of this spatial distortion takes a heavy toll on the already vulnerable Doctor, who collapses, his weakened state exacerbated by the town's active resistance. His sudden incapacitation underscores the immediate danger and the urgency of their predicament. Tegan and Nyssa, witnessing the Doctor's collapse and the town's increasingly hostile nature, understand the critical need to get him back into the Zero Cabinet, their only known means of stabilizing his fragile post-regenerative state. The segment concludes with the full revelation of Castrovalva as a living, spatial trap, actively working against their escape and threatening the Doctor's very existence.
