Castrovalva Part 4

The Doctor and his companions must navigate the recursive town of Castrovalva to prevent the Master from using a zero structure to destroy the town and everyone in it.

The Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan materialize in Castrovalva, a town trapped in a recursive spatial anomaly. Their mission is to find the Zero Cabinet, which is crucial to understanding and escaping the anomaly. The Doctor soon discovers that the town's history is fabricated, and the Portreeve, who seems to be in charge, is actually the Master in disguise. The Master intends to use the Zero Cabinet and a tapestry to sustain and control Castrovalva, entrapping its inhabitants and Adric, a young companion of the Doctor. As the Doctor and his friends navigate the ever-changing town, they uncover the Master's plan and work to thwart it. With the help of Shardovan, a local who doubts the official history, and Mergrave, a pharmacist, they manage to free Adric and disrupt the Master's control over Castrovalva. The town collapses, and they escape through a tunnel created by Adric's mathematical abilities, pursued by the Master. They finally outrun the collapsing town and return to the TARDIS, reflecting on their adventure and the Master's defeat.

Act 1

The Doctor, still recovering from regeneration, sends Nyssa and Tegan to find the Zero Cabinet, which he believes holds the key to understanding Castrovalva's spatial anomaly. While they search, the Doctor discovers a hidden note within an ancient book, raising his suspicions about the town's fabricated history. He engages Mergrave, the pharmacist, in a conversation about the town's geography, using a map drawn on a mirror to expose Mergrave's contradictory descriptions of his pharmacy's location. This confirms the Doctor's theory that Castrovalva is a recursive, impossible place. Tegan and Nyssa locate the Zero Cabinet, repurposed as a washtub, further solidifying the town's bizarre nature. The Doctor deduces that Castrovalva's entire twelve-hundred-year history is a forgery, possibly orchestrated by Shardovan, the librarian. As they prepare to take the Doctor (concealed within the Zero Cabinet) to the Portreeve, the Doctor reveals his true identity and suspicions to Shardovan, who covertly assists him. The act culminates in the dramatic reveal of the Portreeve as the Master, who activates a powerful tapestry to demonstrate his control over Castrovalva and declare his intent to destroy the Doctor, shifting the narrative from mystery to direct confrontation.

Act 2

Following the Master's reveal, he taunts Nyssa and Tegan, confirming Adric's entrapment within the Zero Cabinet. The Master boasts of his power, derived from the tapestry, which can build and hold entire worlds. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Shardovan climb to an upper window of the Portreeve's house, planning their intervention. The Doctor works to convince Mergrave and Ruther that the Portreeve is an impostor, an evil force they must help him defeat. As the Master struggles to open the Zero Cabinet, he sees the Doctor's image reflected in the tapestry, confirming his presence. The Doctor's voice echoes, challenging the Master. Enraged, the Master drags the Zero Cabinet from the table, breaking it open upon impact with the floor. This action reveals Adric, suspended within a lethal energy web. The Doctor confronts the Master directly, demanding Adric's release. When Ruther attempts to strike the Master, he vanishes, demonstrating the Master's absolute control over Castrovalva's inhabitants. Above, Shardovan, having been convinced by the Doctor, prepares a daring act. Despite the Doctor's warning not to touch the web, Shardovan swings on a chandelier, sacrificing himself by crashing into the energy web to free Adric. The Master, furious at the disruption of his web, retreats into a hidden TARDIS within the fireplace and dematerializes, leaving Castrovalva without its sustaining structure and initiating its collapse.

Act 3

With the Master escaped and his sustaining web destroyed, Castrovalva begins to collapse into a chaotic, pixilated state. The Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and Adric must find an escape route. Mergrave, initially attempting to guide them, succumbs to the town's confusion. Adric, whose mathematical abilities created the original zero structure, now perceives a way out, identifying a non-Castrovalvan element: a hillside leading to a rock tunnel. The group follows Adric into the tunnel, but the Master's voice echoes, demanding his web back. Mergrave, in a final act of defiance and sacrifice, grapples with the Master within the closing tunnel, ensuring the Doctor and his companions can escape. The tunnel seals behind them, leaving the Master trapped with the collapsing Castrovalvans. The Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and Adric emerge into a woodland, looking back as Castrovalva vanishes completely. They reflect on Shardovan's sacrifice and the Master's apparent defeat. As they approach the TARDIS, the Doctor reveals that Tegan's earlier successful 'flight' was a pre-programmed illusion by Adric, ensuring they would arrive at Castrovalva as part of the Master's plan. The Doctor, feeling fully recovered and renewed, expresses his readiness to pilot the TARDIS, signaling his full regeneration and the beginning of new adventures. The TARDIS dematerializes, concluding their harrowing experience.
