Four to Doomsday Part 2

The Doctor and companions face an existential threat on a massive generation ship where ancient cultures have been preserved, as they unravel the ship's mysterious purpose and confront its enigmatic ruler.

The Doctor, Tegan, Adric, and Nyssa find themselves on a colossal generation ship called Urbanka, where they've been invited by its rulers, Enlightenment and Persuasion. The ship, carrying three billion inhabitants, is revealed to be on a mission to resettle on Earth after their home planet was destroyed. As the companions explore the ship, they discover various Earth cultures from different time periods, preserved and integrated into the ship's society. Tegan grows increasingly uneasy and desperate to escape, while the Doctor is intrigued by the ship's technology and history. As tensions rise, the companions are separated, and the Doctor begins to suspect the true nature of the ship and its intentions. The Monarch, the ruler of Urbanka, takes a particular interest in the Doctor, seeking to understand his abilities and potential usefulness. The narrative unfolds with the companions navigating the ship's various chambers, witnessing its advanced technology, and uncovering the dark secrets beneath its seemingly utopian surface. The story reaches its climax as the Doctor realizes the ship's true purpose and the fate that awaits Earth, setting the stage for a confrontation with the Monarch and a desperate bid to escape.

Act 1

The Doctor, Tegan, Adric, and Nyssa continue their initial interactions with Enlightenment and Persuasion aboard the colossal generation ship, Urbanka. They learn of Urbanka's destruction a thousand years prior and the ship's mission to resettle three billion inhabitants on Earth. Tegan expresses her growing desire to leave, while the Doctor remains intrigued by the advanced technology and the ship's true nature. The Monarch, observing from the Throne Room, takes a keen interest in the Doctor, ordering Control to gather information on him, Gallifrey, and artron energy. The companions are then led to guest quarters, where Bigon, an ancient Earthling, reveals he was 'rescued' a hundred generations ago. The Doctor, using his sonic screwdriver to jam the monopticons, deduces that the Urbankans have visited Earth multiple times over thousands of years, collecting cultural representatives, and now intend to colonize Earth permanently, a prospect he finds deeply troubling. This realization elevates the stakes from mere exploration to an existential threat. The Monarch, recognizing the Doctor's lively intelligence, orchestrates the separation of the companions, sending the Doctor and Tegan to a 'recreational' area while Adric and Nyssa are diverted elsewhere, intending to learn more about the Doctor through his younger companions. This deliberate separation marks a significant turning point, shifting the narrative from collective discovery to individual challenges and heightened tension.

Act 2

Following their forced separation, the Doctor and Tegan navigate the ship's 'recreational' space, observing various Earth cultures—Mayans, Chinese, and Greeks—performing ritualized activities. Tegan grows increasingly distressed by the unsettling atmosphere and the violent nature of some performances, such as a staged hoplite fight ending in a 'death' that elicits applause. Bigon, the ancient Earthling, covertly approaches the Doctor, hinting at a secret and requesting a private meeting, which the Doctor facilitates by feigning a dizzy spell to divert a monopticon. Meanwhile, Adric and Nyssa explore different sections of the ship, first the Flora Chamber, then the Library, and finally the Mobiliary. In the Library, they discover the 'Greeks' working at consoles are unnaturally cold and possess shiny discs on the backs of their hands. Nyssa attempts to remove one, prompting a forceful reaction from the Greek and a warning from the Monarch. Their most significant discovery occurs in the Mobiliary, where they witness a 'dead' hoplite from the recreational area being placed on a couch, covered by a transparent shield, and then emerging minutes later, fully healed, his chest wound vanished. This revelation confirms the artificial, non-living nature of these 'Earthlings' and strongly suggests they are constructs or automatons. The Monarch, having observed these discoveries, orders the immediate capture of Adric and Nyssa, escalating the danger and setting the stage for a direct confrontation. The act concludes with hoplites advancing on the two younger companions, leaving their fate uncertain.
