Four to Doomsday Part 4

The Doctor and his companions must outwit the ruthless Monarch, who seeks to exploit Earth's minerals while posing as a benevolent host, and prevent him from achieving his sinister goals.

In this episode, the Doctor, Nyssa, Adric, and Tegan find themselves on the planet Urbanka, where they encounter Monarch, a powerful and cunning leader who appears to be a benevolent host but has ulterior motives. Monarch's goal is to exploit Earth's minerals to travel faster than the speed of light, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his objective. The Doctor and his companions must navigate the complexities of Monarch's rule, avoid his android guards, and prevent him from carrying out his plans. Along the way, the Doctor has a change of heart about Monarch, initially believing him to be a benevolent ruler but later realizing his true nature. The Doctor and his friends also work to free Nyssa, who has been taken hostage, and Adric becomes increasingly conflicted about his loyalty to the Doctor and his own moral code. As tensions escalate, the Doctor and his companions devise a plan to escape, disable Monarch's defenses, and ultimately thwart his sinister plans. In the climactic finale, the Doctor outwits Monarch, uses his poison against him, and rescues his friends, ensuring their safe return to Earth.

Act 1

Nyssa's quick thinking temporarily neutralizes the android executioners, using a screwdriver and pencil to short-circuit them, a moment of ingenuity that highlights Urbankan intelligence. Despite this, Persuasion confiscates the Doctor's crucial sonic device, and Monarch escalates the conflict by taking Nyssa hostage, explicitly using her as leverage to control the Doctor's actions. Under intense surveillance, the Doctor masterfully employs deception, feigning belief in Monarch's benevolent intentions and praising his 'breadth of vision' to a conflicted Adric. This calculated performance allows the Doctor to secretly communicate his true, dire assessment of Monarch's character and his sinister plan to exploit Earth's minerals. Adric, initially swayed by Monarch's apparent civility and his own idealism, is eventually convinced by the Doctor's arguments, particularly the revelation of Monarch's hidden poison. Subsequently, the Doctor successfully recruits Lin Futu, appealing to his wisdom and exposing Monarch's false promises regarding leadership on Earth. Lin Futu agrees to re-circuit Bigon, effectively creating an internal alliance and a crucial point of resistance within Monarch's own ranks. This act meticulously establishes the Doctor's strategy of psychological manipulation and alliance-building under duress, laying the groundwork for the subsequent, high-stakes escape and confrontation.

Act 2

The Doctor initiates his perilous escape plan, attempting a dangerous spacewalk from Hatch Nine to reach the TARDIS. Adric provides crucial assistance by distracting the monopticon, but the Doctor's initial lifeline proves too short, forcing his return. Upon re-entry, he faces immediate danger from Persuasion, whom he quickly disables by removing his personality chip. Retrieving his sonic screwdriver, the Doctor makes a second, successful attempt to reach the TARDIS, again aided by Adric's distraction and his own ingenuity, using a cricket ball's momentum to propel himself. Once inside the TARDIS, he and Tegan promptly return to Monarch's ship to rescue Nyssa and Adric. Monarch retaliates by cutting all life support atmosphere, creating a critical, rapidly escalating threat. The Doctor, feigning a trance to conserve oxygen, directs Bigon to change the ship's course to Urbanka, a move designed to disorient Monarch. In a climactic confrontation, the Doctor uses Monarch's own stored poison against him, throwing the phial at Monarch, who screams, shrinks, and is neutralized. With Monarch defeated, the companions escape in the TARDIS, while Bigon, Lin Futu, and the other Urbankans decide to abandon their original mission and seek a new beginning on another planet. Nyssa's sudden collapse inside the TARDIS provides a final, unresolved challenge, hinting at ongoing consequences.
