The Doctor and his companions, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan, find themselves on the planet Deva Loka, where they encounter the Kinda, a seemingly peaceful and telepathic native species, but their presence and actions lead to unexpected consequences and revelations.

The Doctor and his companions, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan, arrive on the planet Deva Loka, which appears to be a paradise with abundant food and no diseases. However, they soon discover that the native Kinda are being held hostage by a human expedition led by Sanders. The Doctor and his companions try to understand the Kinda and their culture, while also dealing with the consequences of the expedition's actions. As they explore the planet, they encounter various mysteries, including an array of crystal windchimes, a metal structure with an armored suit, and a black void where Tegan experiences strange and surreal encounters. The Doctor and his companions also uncover the truth about the Kinda's telepathic abilities and their connection to the human concept of molecular biology. Ultimately, the Doctor and his companions must navigate the complexities of the Kinda's world and the humans' actions to find a way to coexist or escape.

Act 1

The narrative opens on Deva Loka, establishing the presence of a human expedition led by the jocular but authoritarian Sanders, alongside his rigid and paranoid security officer, Hindle. Their control room, amidst a dense jungle, reveals a tense situation: crew members are missing, and Hindle expresses concerns about security, which Sanders dismisses. Simultaneously, the Doctor and his companions, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan, arrive, their TARDIS parked in the jungle. Nyssa experiences a sudden mental disorientation, necessitating the Doctor's delta wave augmenter, which temporarily incapacitates Nyssa and leaves the crucial sonic screwdriver within the TARDIS. This early event isolates the companions and removes a key tool. As the Doctor, Adric, and Tegan explore the seemingly paradisiacal jungle, they discover an array of intricate crystal windchimes, a sophisticated artifact that hints at the Kinda's advanced, yet unseen, culture. The inciting incident occurs when Adric, exploring further, inadvertently activates a man-sized armored suit. This mechanical entity then herds the Doctor and Adric directly into the human dome, leading to their immediate capture and integration into the expedition's unfolding drama. Concurrently, Tegan, left behind at the windchimes, is drawn into a surreal "black void," where she encounters the first of several enigmatic, glowing figures, Anatta and Anicca, who play a mysterious game and challenge her very existence, initiating a parallel, mystical storyline of psychological manipulation and existential questioning.

Act 2

Captured by the human expedition, the Doctor and Adric are brought into the dome, where they are interrogated by Sanders and Hindle. The Doctor learns about the missing crew members and the expedition's policy of holding Kinda hostages, whom Sanders dismisses as "savages." However, the expedition's scientist, Todd, expresses a more nuanced view, believing the Kinda pose no threat and are culturally non-hostile. The Doctor, concerned for Tegan's safety and seeking to understand the Kinda, is granted access to the two Kinda hostages. During his investigation, he and Todd make a significant discovery: the Kinda wear chest decorations resembling a "double helix," suggesting an unexpected understanding of molecular biology. Todd further hypothesizes that the Kinda are telepathic, communicating without language, which directly contradicts Sanders' dismissive assessment. Meanwhile, Tegan's isolation in the black void deepens. She encounters Dukkha, a younger, more overtly manipulative figure, who continues to challenge her reality and introduces the recurring snake motif. The internal dynamics of the human expedition deteriorate as Hindle's paranoia intensifies, leading to a confrontation with Todd over her "forbidden" native produce. Sanders, ignoring Adric's warning about the armored suit's potential malfunction and Roberts' disappearance, decides to venture out in the Total Survival Suit, placing the increasingly unstable Hindle in charge of the dome. This decision elevates Hindle's authority and sets the stage for his dangerous actions.

Act 3

With Sanders preparing to depart in the Total Survival Suit and the increasingly unstable Hindle left in charge, the narrative accelerates towards its climax. Hindle, exhibiting signs of mental deterioration and paranoia, fully asserts control over the Kinda hostages. He releases them from their cage and uses a hexagonal mirror to influence them, leading them to kneel before him, signifying a profound and disturbing shift in power dynamics and a potential for malevolent control. This action marks a critical turning point within the human expedition, as the internal threat posed by Hindle's instability becomes overtly dangerous, directly impacting the Kinda. Simultaneously, Tegan's psychological ordeal in the black void reaches its most intense and disorienting phase. Dukkha, the enigmatic figure, confronts Tegan, challenging her fundamental belief in her own existence. The climax of Tegan's storyline occurs when Dukkha introduces a second, identical Tegan, forcing the original Tegan into an existential crisis where she must discern which of them is real and which is an illusion. The episode concludes with Hindle asserting his unsettling control over the Kinda and Tegan trapped in a profound state of psychological uncertainty, leaving both plotlines at a critical, unresolved juncture and setting a dramatic cliffhanger for the next installment.
