Act 1

The narrative opens in 17th-century England, introducing the Squire, his son Charles, and daughter Elizabeth. Their quiet evening is dramatically interrupted by a spectacular celestial event, described by Elizabeth as 'a hundred shooting stars' that set the sky ablaze. This awe-inspiring phenomenon quickly turns ominous when a metallic, non-period object crashes nearby, burying itself in the ground and emitting a green beam that grievously injures their servant, Ralph. This incident serves as the story's inciting incident, immediately establishing an alien presence and a direct threat to the family. Charles, demonstrating resourcefulness, attempts to defend their home with a flintlock pistol, while the Squire, initially dismissive, quickly grasps the gravity of their situation. A confrontation ensues in the servant's hall, where they face an unseen attacker wielding an energy weapon. The tension escalates with the appearance of a brightly decorated android, prompting the family to discharge their muskets in a desperate defense. The act concludes with the breaking of dawn, implying a temporary cessation of the immediate attack, but leaving the full extent of the alien threat and its origins unresolved. This initial act effectively establishes the historical setting, introduces the human characters facing an inexplicable danger, and sets a tone of mystery and peril as the family grapples with an invasion beyond their comprehension. The focus remains tightly on the immediate impact of the alien arrival on this isolated household.

Act 2

Following the dramatic events at the manor, the narrative shifts perspective to the TARDIS, where the Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan are preparing for Tegan's return to Earth. Adric's previous interference with TARDIS controls is highlighted, foreshadowing potential malfunctions. The Doctor's attempt to return Tegan to Heathrow in 1981 goes awry, landing them instead three hundred years too early in 17th-century England, a temporal error that frustrates Tegan immensely. Upon exiting the TARDIS, they immediately encounter the harsh realities of the era: plague-ridden villagers burning sulphur and potassium nitrate for purification, who view strangers with suspicion and hostility. The Doctor's group is attacked by these villagers, forcing them to flee. They are then rescued by Richard Mace, a 'gentleman of the road' and former actor, who provides refuge in a barn and explains the pervasive fear of the plague. This encounter not only grounds the TARDIS crew in the historical context but also provides the first concrete link to the earlier events: Mace mentions a recent, unusual comet. The Doctor quickly identifies an alien bracelet worn by Mace as made of polygrite and Nyssa discovers alien power packs in the barn, confirming a spacecraft landing. This leads the Doctor to investigate the nearby manor house, where they find evidence of alien activity, including missing weapons, gunpowder, more power packs, and scarring from a high-energy beam in the cellar. The act culminates with the Doctor discovering a bricked-up wall in the cellar, strongly suggesting the aliens are not only present but have deliberately concealed something, raising the stakes for their investigation.
