The Doctor and his companions, Nyssa and Tegan, materialize on the planet Manussa, where Tegan's connection to an ancient entity, the Mara, threatens to unleash its power, forcing the Doctor to navigate the planet's complex history and hidden dangers.

The Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan arrive on the planet Manussa, formerly the homeworld of the Sumaran Empire, after a mysterious navigation malfunction. Tegan begins experiencing recurring dreams and nightmares, hinting at a connection to the Mara, an entity from the Kinda world. The Doctor discovers that Tegan may be possessed by the Mara, which is attempting to return to power. As they explore the planet, they encounter the Federator's son, Lon, and the Director of Research, Ambril, who are bound by tradition and superstition. The Doctor must guide Tegan through hypnosis to confront her fears and the Mara's influence, leading them to the Chamber of the Mara and a hidden cave system. Act 1

The TARDIS materializes on Manussa, a planet unknown to the Doctor and Nyssa, following a mysterious navigational malfunction. The Doctor detects traces of anti-matter, ruling out a simple error. Nyssa consults a reference book, identifying Manussa as a former homeworld of the Sumaran Empire, now a Federation colony. This discovery puzzles the Doctor, who realizes Tegan, still asleep, must have set the coordinates. Simultaneously, Tegan awakens from a recurring nightmare, unable to recall its specifics but confirming a persistent sense of fear. The Doctor suspects a deeper connection to her past experiences with the Mara. Meanwhile, on Manussa, Lon, the Federator's son, expresses profound boredom with the planet's traditional ceremonies and dismisses the 'Legend of the Return' concerning the Mara as mere superstition, much to his mother Tanha's dismay. Tanha, however, recalls a previous Director of Research who believed in the Mara's potential return. The Doctor, connecting Tegan's dreams to the planet's history and the navigational anomaly, concludes the Mara, an entity from the Kinda world, has seized temporary control of Tegan's mind to bring itself back to its former domain. To counter this, the Doctor plans to use hypnosis to delve into Tegan's subconscious, hoping to confront the Mara directly within her dreams before it can fully manifest its power.

Act 2

With the Mara's influence confirmed, the Doctor initiates a hypnotic session with Tegan, aiming to penetrate her subconscious and understand the entity's intentions. Under hypnosis, Tegan revisits her terrifying dream, describing a 'snake mouth' and a hidden cave, but vehemently resists entering, a clear manifestation of the Mara's protective hold. The Mara's voice, distorted and menacing, speaks through Tegan, demanding to be left alone. Simultaneously, Lon, Tanha, and Ambril embark on their planned visit to the planet's ancient cave system, which includes the physical 'Snake Mouth' entrance. Ambril, the Director of Research, dismisses the cave's significance beyond geological formation and reiterates his scientific disdain for the 'Legend of the Return.' The Doctor and Nyssa, guided by Tegan's dream imagery, follow the group to the cave. Outside, Tegan's fear intensifies, preventing her from entering. The Doctor proceeds alone into the Chamber of the Mara, a cavern dominated by a giant snake relief. He confronts Lon, Tanha, and Ambril, revealing the Mara's true nature as a latent mental force inhabiting Tegan and explaining his device to inhibit its power. Lon, intrigued by the Doctor's claims, agrees to meet Tegan. However, a street puppeteer, unknowingly, triggers Tegan's deep-seated fear with snake puppets, causing her to flee in terror from Nyssa. Disoriented and alone in the market, Tegan collapses and is brought into a Fortune Teller's booth. The Seer, believing Tegan merely overwhelmed, removes the anti-dream earpiece. With the inhibitory device gone, Tegan succumbs completely, her laughter transforming into the chilling cackle of the fully possessed Mara. The Doctor and Nyssa, still searching, remain unaware of Tegan's dire fate, grappling with the mystery of the Mara's resurgence.
