Mawdryn Undead Part 2

The Doctor's TARDIS malfunctions, leading him to crash-land in 1977, where he encounters his former friend Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, who now suffers from amnesia, and becomes entangled in a complex web of time travel and deception.

The Doctor, accompanied by Tegan and Nyssa, travels to Earth in search of his TARDIS, which has malfunctioned due to a transmat mishap. They materialize in 1983, but the TARDIS reappears in 1977, causing confusion and a series of events that intertwine with the Doctor's past. The Doctor encounters Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, an old friend and ally from his UNIT days, who now teaches at a school and suffers from amnesia about their previous encounters. As the Doctor tries to repair his TARDIS and return to his companions, he unravels a mystery involving a school, UNIT, and a sinister plot by the Black Guardian, who manipulates Turlough, a young boy with a crystal that can track the Doctor. The story weaves through time, blurring the lines between past and present, as the Doctor navigates his regeneration, the consequences of time travel, and the complexities of human relationships.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Turlough in 1983, immediately facing a crisis as the transmat control unit explodes, throwing them back and causing the TARDIS to briefly materialize before vanishing entirely. The Doctor, disoriented by the TARDIS's disappearance, questions Turlough about their location, confirming they are in 1983, yet the TARDIS is absent. Simultaneously, Tegan and Nyssa, inside the TARDIS, find themselves in an unknown location, observing an obelisk and urns on the scanner, and quickly realize the Doctor is not with them. A transmat capsule arrives, delivering a severely burnt individual they mistakenly identify as the Doctor, rushing to aid him and bring him into the TARDIS. Meanwhile, the Doctor encounters an older, amnesiac Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, who now teaches at a school and does not recognize his old friend. The Doctor attempts to reawaken the Brigadier's memories of UNIT and their shared past, initially facing skepticism and denial. Through a series of evocative flashbacks triggered by the Doctor mentioning old companions, the Brigadier's memory is finally restored, acknowledging the Doctor and the TARDIS. Concurrently, Turlough, having been locked in the sickbay, is confronted by the Headmaster, who reveals himself as the Black Guardian. The Guardian outlines Turlough's moral dilemma: kill the Doctor to secure passage home. Despite Turlough's initial reluctance, the Black Guardian invades his mind, asserting complete control and compelling him to fulfill the mission to destroy the Doctor. This act establishes the core mystery of the TARDIS's disappearance, introduces the amnesiac Brigadier, and firmly sets Turlough's coerced antagonist role, while the companions unwittingly bring a dangerous imposter into their sanctuary. The temporal displacement is subtly hinted at as Tegan in 1977 encounters boys celebrating the Silver Jubilee, a detail she initially overlooks.

Act 2

Following the Brigadier's memory restoration, the Doctor and the 1983 Brigadier work to piece together the temporal anomaly. The Doctor deduces that the TARDIS, along with Nyssa and Tegan, has landed in the correct geographical location but the wrong time zone: 1977. This realization is confirmed by Tegan's earlier encounter with the 1977 Brigadier and the Silver Jubilee celebrations. A phone call reveals Turlough's disappearance from the sickbay, prompting the Doctor to surmise Turlough's attempt to repair the transmat capsule for escape, further entangling his malicious intent. Within the TARDIS in 1977, the burnt figure, Mawdryn, begins to recover, exhibiting unsettling signs of "perpetual regeneration" and a distorted appearance. He reveals his true name, Mawdryn, and his desperate ambition to become a Time Lord, demanding Nyssa prepare for immediate departure, disregarding Tegan's absence. Mawdryn's urgency and strange demeanor alarm Nyssa, who still believes him to be the Doctor undergoing a difficult regeneration. The tension escalates as Tegan returns to the TARDIS, having realized the time discrepancy. She confronts Nyssa, asserting that the individual in the TARDIS cannot be the Doctor. Despite Nyssa's insistence that it is a regeneration, Tegan's firm denial, coupled with the 1977 Brigadier's presence, solidifies the terrifying truth: the companions have brought an unknown, potentially hostile entity into their most vulnerable space. This act accelerates the plot by clarifying the temporal split, solidifying Turlough's enforced villainy, and culminating in the companions' harrowing discovery of Mawdryn's true, dangerous identity, setting the stage for direct confrontation and heightened peril.
