Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor, Nyssa, and Kari aboard a space liner that has just docked with Terminus, a massive and mysterious space station. They quickly encounter Lazars, individuals afflicted with a deadly disease, prompting the Doctor to warn his companions against physical contact. Simultaneously, Tegan and Turlough find themselves trapped within the cramped, dangerous underfloor areas of the liner, struggling to find an exit. Olvir, a previous acquaintance, reappears, initially hiding, but eventually reveals crucial information: Terminus purports to offer a cure for Lazar's disease, yet no one who seeks treatment ever returns, a fact tragically underscored by his sister's death from the same illness. The Doctor, investigating the liner's computer, makes a startling discovery: Terminus is situated at the precise geographical center of the known universe, hinting at a deeper, more sinister purpose than a mere medical facility. The act culminates with a sudden power cut and a chilling Tannoy announcement of "stage one sterilisation," compelling all unprotected personnel to evacuate the liner immediately. This warning transforms the situation from cautious investigation into an urgent, life-threatening scramble, effectively scattering the companions and setting the stage for the escalating dangers within Terminus.

Act 2

As "stage one sterilisation" engulfs the space liner, the companions face increasingly dire circumstances. Nyssa, exhibiting symptoms of Lazar's disease, collapses from illness. Olvir, attempting to assist, recoils upon realizing Nyssa is contaminated, abandoning her as a robot drone seizes her wrist. Despite her pleas, Nyssa is forcibly dragged away, marking a critical turning point and the first major separation of the Doctor's group. Concurrently, the Doctor and Kari, racing against the clock as "stage two sterilisation" begins, narrowly escape the liner by diving under a rapidly closing door, gaining entry into Terminus itself. Their move signifies a full commitment to the hostile station, abandoning the relative safety of the liner. Meanwhile, Tegan and Turlough, still trapped within the liner's underfloor plates, persist in their desperate search for an exit. They endure the terrifying sounds of the sterilization process and the presence of armored figures, eventually succeeding in breaking through a panel, allowing them to continue their perilous journey within the station's depths. This act dramatically escalates the stakes, leaving the companions scattered and Nyssa in the hands of unknown captors.

Act 3

Nyssa, now a captive, is brought to a "Receiving Area" within Terminus, where she encounters the station's enigmatic personnel: Sigurd and Valgard. Valgard reveals the grim truth: she is not being treated but processed, destined for "the Garm," a mysterious and feared entity from which no one has ever returned. This revelation solidifies the sinister nature of Terminus and Nyssa's perilous situation. The internal dynamics of the Terminus guards are also exposed, with Eirak, the apparent leader, demonstrating a callous disregard for Bor, another guard who has ventured into the "Forbidden Zone" due to climbing readings, prioritizing the station's operation over individual lives. The guards' reliance on "Hydromel" is also hinted at, suggesting a deeper dependency or control mechanism. Valgard, showing a flicker of concern for Bor, communicates directly with the Garm, a bipedal creature with a dog-like face and glowing red eyes, instructing it to retrieve Bor's body if he has perished. This moment physically introduces a major antagonist and establishes its role within Terminus. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Kari, having just entered Terminus, are observed by Valgard from an upper catwalk, confirming their entry into the heart of danger and indicating their pursuit of Nyssa is already known to the station's inhabitants.
