The screenplay 'Enlightenment - Part One' revolves around the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough as they materialize in the TARDIS on a yacht in 1902. Their mission begins when the White Guardian, through a mysterious message, warns the Doctor of an imminent danger that requires his presence on the yacht. The trio soon discovers that the yacht is participating in a race, and the crew is suffering from amnesia. As they try to unravel the mystery behind the crew's condition and the race, they encounter the sinister Captain Striker and his officers. The Doctor's goal is to prevent a catastrophic outcome, as indicated by the White Guardian's warning. Throughout their journey, Tegan and Turlough face challenges as they navigate the yacht's hierarchy and deal with the crew's unusual behavior. Act 1

The narrative opens within the TARDIS, where the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough are engaged in a chess game. A mysterious power drain afflicts the vessel, prompting the Doctor's investigation. He soon discerns the power is being actively tapped, not merely leaking. This leads to the first contact from the White Guardian, who delivers fragmented, urgent warnings about 'extreme danger' and 'death,' providing cryptic coordinates. Despite Tegan's apprehension, the Doctor insists on increasing power to receive the full message, which briefly manifests the White Guardian as a visual entity. The communication is abruptly cut short by the ominous intervention of the Black Guardian, who declares control over the Doctor's destiny and predicts his demise. The TARDIS then lurches violently, arriving at an unknown destination dictated by the partial coordinates. The Doctor, driven by the White Guardian's warning to prevent a dangerous event, prepares to investigate. He instructs Turlough to accompany him, leaving Tegan behind to monitor for further contact from the White Guardian, emphasizing the critical nature of the mission and the need for reliable assistance. Their initial exploration reveals they have materialized within the hold of an Edwardian sailing yacht, confirming the 1902 setting and the presence of a seemingly hypnotized crewman. This act establishes the central mystery, the immediate threat from the Guardians, and the Doctor's imperative mission, setting the stage for the unfolding danger on the yacht.

Act 2

Following the TARDIS's arrival, the narrative splits the companions, deepening the mystery and introducing immediate threats. Tegan, left alone in the TARDIS, receives a second, more specific, but equally cryptic message from the White Guardian: 'Must not win. Tell the Doctor. Winner takes all.' This transmission causes an overload and console explosions, leaving Tegan shaken and isolated. Concurrently, the Doctor and Turlough emerge into the yacht's fo'c'sle, encountering the ship's crew. The crew, suffering from collective amnesia regarding their enlistment, mistakes the Doctor for the ship's cook, a role they had been expecting. This interaction reveals they are participating in a mysterious 'race' and have received advance wages, yet cannot recall how they came aboard. The Doctor quickly deduces the crew's manipulated state and the unusual circumstances of their voyage. Meanwhile, Marriner, a peculiar officer Tegan previously glimpsed on the TARDIS scanner, discovers Tegan hiding in the hold. He expresses an unsettling fascination with her, offering to lead her to her 'friends' while subtly asserting control. The Doctor and Tegan are eventually reunited in a lavish stateroom, where they share their fragmented information, confirming the 'race' and the 'winner takes all' stakes. This act solidifies the immediate setting, introduces the main antagonists (the officers), and establishes the core conflict of the mysterious race with high, undefined stakes, while highlighting the crew's compromised state.

Act 3

The third act escalates the immediate danger and further unveils the sinister nature of the yacht's command. Captain Striker formally welcomes the Doctor and Tegan, introducing his unnervingly blank-faced officers, confirming their status as unwilling participants in the voyage. The yacht sets sail, signifying the commencement of the mysterious race. During a tense dinner, Striker speaks of an 'eventful passage' and a 'stormy one,' hinting at the perilous journey ahead. Following dinner, the companions are forcibly separated: Marriner escorts Tegan to the wheelhouse, while Jackson, a crewman, drags a reluctant Turlough 'aloft' into the ship's rigging, a place Turlough explicitly fears. The Doctor, left alone, resolves to find Tegan, but not before Turlough voices his fear and reluctance to engage in the dangerous work. A sudden scream from a crewman aloft underscores the immediate physical peril faced by Turlough and the other sailors. As Tegan is led to the wheelhouse, she observes anachronistic 'wetsuits' hanging on a bulkhead, a clear indication that this Edwardian vessel harbors technology far beyond its supposed era. This discovery, coupled with the scream and the forced separation of the companions, heightens the stakes dramatically. The act concludes with the Doctor isolated from his companions, who are now directly exposed to the yacht's immediate, life-threatening dangers, leaving the mystery of the race and the officers' true intentions unresolved, serving as a compelling cliffhanger for the end of 'Part One'.
