The Awakening Part 2

The Doctor must stop Sir George Hutchinson's war games that are awakening the ancient evil Malus, threatening to destroy the village of Little Hodcombe and beyond.

The Doctor and his companions arrive in 1643 during the English Civil War to find that their actions have been anticipated by Sir George Hutchinson, who is using the war games to awaken the malevolent entity known as the Malus. As the Doctor navigates the complex web of events, he discovers that the Malus is an ancient being reengineered as an instrument of war. The entity feeds on fear and anger, and its activation poses a catastrophic threat to the village and potentially the world. The Doctor, along with his companions and new allies, works to stop the war games and destroy the Malus. They face numerous challenges, including psychic projections and the influence of the Malus on Sir George. Ultimately, they succeed in defeating Sir George, who was under the Malus' control, and the entity destroys itself in a final, desperate attempt to fulfill its programming. The story concludes with the Doctor and his companions reflecting on their actions and the aftermath of their adventure.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor recovering in the church, where he and Jane discover the giant, moving face of the Malus, which Jane recognizes as a representation of the devil. Psychic projections, including a disfigured man and a Cavalier, manifest, demonstrating the Malus's growing influence and power. During this, Turlough is captured by Hutchinson's troopers, and Hutchinson explicitly states his intention to keep the companions within his control, hinting at their role in his plans. The Doctor explains to Jane the Malus's nature as a psychic entity requiring a focus point and immense energy, which the ongoing war games are providing. He deduces that Hutchinson, likely influenced by Tegan's grandfather, is deliberately recreating the conditions of the Civil War to fully activate the Malus, leading to a real and dreadful final battle. Simultaneously, Tegan is held at the Manor House, forced into the role of May Queen for the ritual, while Verney, a fellow prisoner, reveals to Turlough that he discovered the Malus and inadvertently led Hutchinson to awaken it. The Doctor, now fully comprehending the catastrophic stakes, rushes to confront Hutchinson, who is clearly under the Malus's sway, setting the stage for direct intervention.

Act 2

Following the Doctor's confrontation with Hutchinson, a plan forms to disrupt the Malus's energy supply. The Doctor, Tegan, Jane, and Wolsey conspire to replace Tegan, the intended May Queen, with a scarecrow during the procession. This act of sabotage aims to reduce the psychic energy fueling the Malus. The plan is executed, enraging Hutchinson, who orders Wolsey's death. The Doctor, Will, Jane, Tegan, and Wolsey escape on the May Queen cart, pursued by Hutchinson's troopers in a chaotic chase. Simultaneously, Turlough and Verney break out of their captivity in the farm building, determined to find the Doctor and destroy the Malus. The group regroups in the church, where the Malus's face is now fully active. The Doctor attempts to use the TARDIS to lock onto and direct the Malus's psychic energy, but the entity senses his intent and grows stronger. Turlough and Verney arrive, intervening to protect the TARDIS from Willow and a trooper. The Doctor successfully severs the Malus's connection to the village's turmoil, causing it to spew green liquid, indicating its weakening. However, the Malus is not yet defeated, preparing for its final defense.

Act 3

With its energy supply cut, the Malus unleashes its final line of defense: three powerful psychic projections of troopers, which attack and kill a real trooper, demonstrating their lethality. Hutchinson, now completely enslaved by the Malus, bursts into the church, brandishing pistols and declaring his service to the entity. Wolsey attempts to appeal to Hutchinson's former honor, while the Doctor tries to break the Malus's hold, explaining that the entity only seeks to destroy its host once strong enough. Hutchinson, in agony, begins to doubt, clutching his head and dropping a pistol. Amidst the chaos of Willow attacking Wolsey, Will pushes Hutchinson directly into the Malus, killing him instantly. With its medium destroyed, the Malus begins its self-destruction, causing the church roof to collapse. The Doctor and his companions escape into the TARDIS just as the church explodes, signifying the Malus's complete annihilation. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor explains the Malus was a living being reengineered as a weapon of war. The companions, including the newly freed Will, Verney, and Wolsey, decide to stay in 1643 for a period, reflecting on the events and the need for rebuilding, both physical and social, in the wake of the Malus's destruction and Hutchinson's downfall.
