Act 1

The Doctor and Peri arrive in 1810 England, the TARDIS having been forcibly diverted from its intended course to Kew Gardens. They materialize on a slag heap near Killingworth, a village experiencing unusual Luddite-style aggression. Miners, after bathing, exhibit uncharacteristic violence, smashing machinery and attacking a cart driver. The Doctor observes a strange red mark on one of the aggressive miners, Jack Ward, and learns of George Stephenson's presence and an upcoming meeting of prominent historical geniuses like Telford, Faraday, and Davy. This convergence of extraordinary minds and inexplicable violence raises the Doctor's suspicions. While investigating the pit, the Doctor and Peri encounter a scarecrow that transforms into the Master, who has been manipulating the Luddites. The Master, disguised, incites the miners against the Doctor, framing him as an "inventor" who threatens their jobs, leading to the Doctor's first direct confrontation with the chemically altered villagers. This act establishes the setting, introduces the main protagonists and antagonists, and sets up the central mystery of the escalating violence and the Master's involvement. The TARDIS's forced landing and the unusual aggression among the miners serve as the inciting incidents, propelling the Doctor and Peri into the unfolding plot.

Act 2

Following the Master's manipulation, aggressive miners corner the Doctor at the pit. Lord Ravensworth, the mine owner, intervenes, saving the Doctor and confirming the unprecedented violence and personality changes among his long-serving workers, specifically mentioning Jack Ward's uncharacteristic aggression. Ravensworth expresses bewilderment at the sudden shift in his men's behavior, reinforcing the Doctor's suspicions that something more sinister than traditional Luddism is at play. Meanwhile, the narrative shifts to a secret laboratory within the Bathhouse, revealing the true orchestrator: the Rani. She is seen extracting a brain chemical from the gassed miners, which she needs for her aliens on Miasimia Goria, and which has the unfortunate side effect of inducing extreme aggression and preventing sleep in humans. The Master, having followed the Rani, confronts her, proposing an alliance. Their conflicting motivations are evident: the Rani seeks her chemical for scientific purposes, while the Master intends to exploit her work to destroy the Doctor and harness the geniuses for his own power base. The Doctor, connecting the Bathhouse to the miners' altered state, decides to investigate it directly, despite Peri's concerns for his safety. The Master, seeing the Doctor's imminent investigation, manipulates the Luddites again, convincing them that the Doctor's TARDIS is a "machine" responsible for their troubles and must be destroyed.

Act 3

The Doctor, disguised as a miner, infiltrates the Bathhouse and is subsequently gassed and captured by the Rani. He awakens in her secret laboratory, manacled to a bed, and confronts her. The Rani reveals her long history of covert operations on Earth, using historical conflicts as cover for her chemical extractions, confirming her scientific, rather than political, motivation. She explains the brain chemical's purpose for her aliens and its aggressive side effect on humans. Simultaneously, Peri, concerned for the Doctor, follows him into the Bathhouse, discovers the hidden laboratory, and is also captured. The Master, having returned, gloats over the Doctor's predicament and unveils his grander scheme: to use the Rani's methods to control the assembled geniuses and transform Earth into his personal power base. He forces the Rani to cooperate by threatening her precious brain fluid phial. While the Doctor and Peri are held captive, the Master orchestrates the Luddites to transport the TARDIS to the mine shaft for destruction. Peri is forced to push the Doctor, still manacled to the bed, through the village, witnessing the TARDIS being prepared for its demise. The TARDIS is then violently pushed down the mine shaft. The Doctor, witnessing this, breaks free from his restraints and races towards the pit, leaving Peri behind as the trolley rolls away, ending the first part on a high-stakes cliffhanger with the TARDIS seemingly destroyed and the Doctor in pursuit.
