Vengeance on Varos Part 2

The Doctor and Peri materialize on Varos, a planet ruled by a brutal Governor and exploited by the Galatron Mining Corporation, and must prevent the execution of Peri and a rebel, Jondar, while thwarting the sinister plans of the corporation's delegate, Sil.

The Doctor and his companion Peri arrive on Varos, a planet under the tyrannical rule of a Governor and exploited for its zeiton-7 mineral by the Galatron Mining Corporation. The Doctor soon discovers that Peri is to be executed, along with a rebel named Jondar, for their perceived crimes against the state. The Doctor escapes from the acid bath and, along with Jondar and another rebel, Areta, attempts to prevent Peri's execution and unravel the truth behind Varos's brutal regime. As the story unfolds, the Doctor learns about the planet's dark past, the true value of zeiton-7, and the sinister plans of Sil, the delegate of the Galatron Mining Corporation. The Doctor and his companions face numerous challenges, including the rehabilitators, the transmutation process, and the cannibalistic creatures in the End Zone. Ultimately, the Doctor thwarts Sil's plans, exposes the truth about the Governor's system, and secures a better future for the people of Varos, including a generous supply of zeiton-7 for his TARDIS.

Act 1

Peri, distraught, confronts the Governor and Sil, convinced the Doctor perished in the acid bath after witnessing his apparent demise on the monitors. Her grief quickly escalates into a furious, physical attempt to attack the Governor, who restrains her. The Governor, however, reveals the Doctor's death was a calculated illusion, a psychological manipulation designed to extract information. Unbeknownst to them, the Doctor, having merely feigned unconsciousness, revives in the acid bath chamber. He dispatches his attendants in a chaotic struggle, using a gurney as a shield, before making his escape. Meanwhile, Peri, steadfastly refusing to disclose her identity or purpose, faces threats of 'reshapement' – a molecular restructuring process. The Governor, intrigued by her fragmented story of a time-traveling TARDIS and its critical need for zeiton-7, temporarily defers her punishment. The Doctor, now disguised in a mask and uniform, is recaptured by Quillam, the technical director, in Prison Control. He is subsequently confined in a metal cage with Jondar, the rebel, and Areta, Jondar's wife, all condemned to a public execution. A fourth noose, ominously present, suggests Peri's impending fate. The scene culminates with the Doctor, Jondar, and Areta led to the scaffold, as Peri is brought in separately, setting the stage for their collective, televised demise, a brutal spectacle for Varosian citizens.

Act 2

The public execution begins with Peri and Areta forcibly separated from the men, destined for the horrifying 'reshapement' chamber, while the Doctor and Jondar ascend the scaffold. Just as the hangman prepares to activate the trapdoor, the Doctor dramatically halts the proceedings. He reveals his astute observation that the broadcast cameras are inactive, exposing the execution as a staged bluff. Seizing this critical moment, the Doctor boldly exposes Sil's decades-long exploitation of Varos, asserting his knowledge of zeiton-7's true, immense value and promising the planet unprecedented prosperity. This revelation profoundly shifts the Governor's perception, who, now deeply suspicious of Sil's deceptive practices, postpones the executions. Despite this reprieve, Peri and Areta remain captive and are subjected to the brutal transmogrifier, transforming into a feathered bird and a scaly reptile, much to the cruel amusement of Sil and the Chief Officer, who observe from an upper gallery. The Doctor, upon learning of their horrific fate, confronts Quillam, the technical director and program devisor, about the experimental process. He shrewdly deduces Quillam's past self-experimentation from the scar tissue beneath his mask. With Jondar's swift assistance, the Doctor disarms Quillam's guards and then deliberately shoots Quillam's control console, destroying the transmogrifier and reversing the women's grotesque transformations. With Peri and Areta slowly recovering their human forms, the group, now including a repentant Maldak, initiates a perilous escape from the severely damaged Punishment Dome, facing immediate pursuit and the unpredictable, dangerous environment.

Act 3

The escape from the chaotic Punishment Dome intensifies as the Doctor, Jondar, and Areta navigate treacherous corridors, eventually commandeering a patrol car amidst the confusion. Simultaneously, the Chief Officer executes a swift coup, deposing the Governor and preparing him for a forced public vote that will lead to his execution. Maldak, a guard swayed by the Governor's desperate appeal for Peri's life and his own dawning realization of the system's cruelty, aids Peri and the Governor in escaping through a network of ventilation ducts, aiming to rendezvous with the Doctor. The Doctor's group, now on foot, enters the perilous 'End Zone,' a treacherous area characterized by mind-altering green mist, the threat of cannibalistic former prisoners, and deadly poisonous vines. They narrowly evade the emaciated cannibals and, in a climactic confrontation with Quillam and the Chief Officer, ingeniously use the swinging poisonous vines to incapacitate and kill their pursuers, eliminating two key antagonists. Reunited, the full group learns of Sil's imminent invasion, only for the news to arrive that a new, abundant zeiton-7 source has been discovered on asteroid Biosculptor. This unforeseen development nullifies Sil's leverage, cancels his invasion, and forces him to accept the Governor's new terms. Empowered by the Doctor's intelligence and Sil's collapsed bargaining position, the Governor re-negotiates the zeiton-7 price to twenty credits per unit, securing an unprecedentedly prosperous future for Varos. The Doctor and Peri, having successfully completed their mission and ensured Varos's liberation, depart in the TARDIS, leaving the citizens to embrace their newfound freedom and a future free from exploitation.
