Act 1

The narrative opens with Merdeen grieving Grell's death, a direct consequence of the planet's oppressive regime, which solidifies Merdeen's disillusionment and the Doctor's resolve to confront the Immortal Drathro. Merdeen blames himself for Grell's fate, highlighting the moral toll of Drathro's rule, but the Doctor urges him not to, instead focusing on the urgent need to reach Drathro's castle. Simultaneously, Drathro's black light system teeters on the brink of catastrophic collapse, a fact confirmed by Drathro himself and his fleeing technicians, Humker and Tandrell, who warn of an imminent explosion. Katryca, leader of the Free, launches a desperate, ill-fated assault on Drathro's castle, believing him dead after the previous events. Drathro swiftly and brutally dispatches Katryca and Broken Tooth by seizing their throats, unequivocally demonstrating his tyrannical power and the futility of direct physical rebellion against him. This violent encounter underscores the immense danger Drathro poses and the dire stakes of the Doctor's mission. Interspersed with these events, the ongoing trial in the Doctor's own time continues, with the Valeyard and Inquisitor challenging the Doctor's past actions, particularly his presence on Ravalox, and hinting at deeper, concealed truths withheld from the court. The Doctor, after learning of Katryca's demise from Balazar and Drathro's chilling order for a mass culling of the waiting organics, resolves to enter the castle alone, believing he can still reason with Drathro or exploit his perceived need for the Doctor's technical expertise to fix the failing system. This decision marks a significant turning point, as the Doctor commits to a direct, high-stakes confrontation, despite the overwhelming odds and the immediate threat to the innocent lives outside. The act establishes the critical nature of the black light system's terminal decay, Drathro's unyielding cruelty, and the Doctor's determination to intervene, setting the stage for their direct ideological and physical conflict.

Act 2

The Doctor enters Drathro's castle alone, initiating a profound philosophical confrontation with the Immortal. The Doctor attempts to reason with Drathro, explaining the system's terminal decay and the universal catastrophe a black light explosion could unleash. He challenges Drathro's narrow, self-serving worldview, arguing for the inherent value of organic life over robotic existence and accusing Drathro of hubris for his refusal to allow the system to be shut down. Drathro, however, remains unmoved, his logic circuits unable to comprehend moral values or the concept of life beyond his own function and control over his 'work units.' While this ideological battle unfolds, Peri, Merdeen, and Balazar search for an alternative entry into the castle, discovering the 'ration chute.' Simultaneously, Glitz and Dibber, driven by their mercenary quest for Drathro's 'secrets,' arrive outside the castle, initially planning a forceful entry but then opting for a more subtle approach. They encounter Peri's group, forming an uneasy alliance. The tension escalates dramatically as the Doctor warns Drathro of the imminent universal threat posed by the black light explosion, even momentarily silencing the Valeyard in the trial room with the gravity of his claims. Drathro then detects the intruders (Peri, Merdeen, Glitz, Dibber) entering the food production chamber via the chute. He activates deadly defenses—a massive fan, laser beams, and a slippery floor—trapping the group in a perilous situation. Dibber's quick thinking and multiblaster create an escape route, halting the immediate threat but leaving them vulnerable inside the castle with Drathro.

Act 3

Following the near-catastrophe in the food processing chamber, Glitz, ever the opportunist, proposes a deceptive solution to Drathro. He offers Drathro a new source of black light from his ship and a journey to the Andromeda constellation, appealing to Drathro's desire for self-preservation and control, but only if Drathro brings his 'secrets.' Drathro, swayed by the promise of continued function, accepts Glitz's offer and orders the Doctor, Peri, and Merdeen to be tied up. As Drathro departs to retrieve his supposed secrets, the Doctor quickly frees himself and his companions, revealing Glitz's 'slip-knot' as a deliberate, if minimal, act of leniency. With moments remaining before the black light system's final collapse, the Doctor races to activate the three-stage shutdown levers. He successfully engages two, but the third remains irrevocably stuck, signifying that a full containment is impossible. The Doctor flees as the system violently explodes, sending a shockwave through the subways. Drathro, caught in the blast, glows red-hot and disintegrates, his 'secrets' box turning to dust in Dibber's hand, revealing only a piece of valuable silictone aerial. Glitz and Dibber, undeterred by the lack of grand secrets, pivot to profiting from the silictone. Meanwhile, Humker and Tandrell emerge into the open air, marveling at their newfound freedom. The Doctor, Peri, and Merdeen reunite with Balazar, and the Doctor inspires the tribe of the Free to embrace their new beginning on the surface, marking the end of Drathro's tyranny and the start of a new era for the planet's inhabitants. The narrative concludes back in the trial room, where the Doctor, despite his triumph, faces the Valeyard's ominous promise of more damning evidence, threatening the Doctor's very life, leaving the overarching trial unresolved.
