Time and the Rani Part 4
The Doctor and Mel must stop the Rani from using a brain and a Time Lord's technology to create a time manipulator that will allow her to control and change the course of evolution on Lakertya and potentially the entire universe.
The Rani, a renegade Time Lord, has created a machine that can control time using the brain of a Time Lord and a device called the Loyhargil. She plans to use this machine to change the course of evolution on Lakertya, a planet inhabited by a peaceful species, and potentially the entire universe. The Doctor and his companion Mel arrive on the planet and team up with a group of Lakertyan rebels to stop the Rani. They discover that the Rani has kidnapped several geniuses from different time periods and is using them to help her complete her machine. The Doctor and Mel must navigate the complexities of the machine and the Rani's plans, while also trying to free the kidnapped geniuses and prevent the Rani from carrying out her destructive goals. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including the Rani's henchmen, Urak and Ikona, and a group of giant bats. The Doctor and Mel ultimately succeed in stopping the Rani, but not before she escapes in her TARDIS.

The narrative beats that drive the story
Urak threatens Mel and Beyus, then confers with the Rani about their timeline for the solstice. The Rani, prioritizing resources, rejects Urak's suggestion to exterminate all Lakertyans, opting instead for "selective retribution" to maintain them as a potential labor force. She dispatches Tetraps to enforce her will. Mel expresses unwavering confidence in the Doctor's character, believing he will ultimately thwart the Rani's schemes. Inside the Brain Chamber, the Doctor's consciousness, connected to the collective genius brain, deliberately incites a chaotic argument among the constituent minds, disrupting the Rani's progress and infuriating her. The Rani disconnects the Doctor, accusing him of inducing "multiple schizophrenia" within the brain. Mel seizes the opportunity, opening the Doctor's cabinet. The Doctor emerges, subdues the Rani, and they trap her inside the cabinet. Escaping, the Doctor and Mel discuss the Rani's ominous rocket and supernova plan. Simultaneously, Urak gathers the Lakertyans in the Centre of Leisure. He brutally demonstrates the exploding anklets by detonating one on a young female, instantly reducing her to a skeleton. This shocking act of violence dramatically escalates the threat to the entire Lakertyan population, underscoring the Rani's ruthlessness. Witnessing this atrocity from hiding, Ikona resolves to contact the Doctor for assistance, signaling the emergence of organized resistance against the Rani's tyranny. The Doctor and Mel continue to evade capture, preparing for their direct confrontation with the Rani's escalating plans.
The Doctor forcibly disrupts the Rani’s control of the sophisticated neural machine by seizing her from behind while her attention is focused on disabling the cabinet holding his consciousness. With …
The Rani, distracted by the Doctor's interference in her genius machine, turns away to shut down the cabinet. Exploiting her momentary vulnerability, Mel opens the Doctor's cabinet and the Doctor …
The Doctor and Mel continue their investigation in the Brain Chamber, deducing the Rani's ultimate, horrifying objective: to use the Loyhargil and helium two to transform Lakertya into a "time manipulator," a cerebral mass capable of dominating and controlling time anywhere in the cosmos. This revelation exposes the Rani's ambition to rewrite universal evolution, even threatening Earth's history. The Brain then provides the final Loyhargil formula, confirming the Rani's success. The Doctor and Mel escape the Brain Chamber, encountering Urak, whom Mel incapacitates with a net cannon. They meet Ikona, who reports the Lakertyans' helplessness due to the anklets. The Doctor, Mel, and Ikona collaborate to disarm the exploding anklets. The Doctor devises a bypass circuit, and Mel, using Ikona's fiber optic filaments, successfully disarms Faroon's anklet. This breakthrough empowers the Lakertyans to resist. Meanwhile, the Rani begins the rocket launch countdown, leaving Urak to guard the Brain Chamber while she retreats to her TARDIS to monitor the experiment. The Doctor and his allies race against time, freeing the kidnapped geniuses from their cabinets. The Doctor entrusts Mel with his TARDIS key, instructing her to take the geniuses to safety. Beyus, understanding the critical importance of the Doctor's work, makes the profound decision to remain in the Brain Chamber to complete the task of disarming the anklets around the central Brain, knowing it means certain self-sacrifice.

As the countdown intensifies, Beyus seals himself within the Brain Chamber, preparing for his final, selfless act. Outside her TARDIS, the Rani monitors the launch, confident in her victory. The Doctor confronts her from a rock slope, falsely claiming he has aborted the launch and that the Lakertyans are attacking. Enraged, the Rani attempts to detonate all remaining Lakertyan anklets, but the Doctor's earlier intervention has disarmed them, rendering her act of retribution futile. Inside the Brain Chamber, Beyus detonates the explosives he placed around the central Brain, destroying it and sacrificing himself in a massive explosion that also obliterates the chamber. Simultaneously, the rocket launches. The Doctor reassures Mel that the delay caused by his actions ensures the rocket will miss the asteroid, preventing the cosmic catastrophe. He crosses his fingers, confirming his uncertainty, but the rocket indeed sails harmlessly past the spinning asteroid. The Rani, witnessing the failure of her plan, flees into her TARDIS, which dematerializes. However, her escape is short-lived; she finds herself trapped in her TARDIS console room, surrounded by upside-down Tetraps, who intend to exploit her "incredible brain" for their own needs, a fitting poetic justice. Back on Lakertya, the Doctor guides the rescued geniuses into his TARDIS, promising to return them to their proper timelines. He then shares a poignant farewell with Faroon and Ikona, reflecting on Beyus's sacrifice. The Doctor reveals he took an antidote for the killer insects, but Ikona, asserting Lakertyan self-reliance, pours it onto the ground. With their mission accomplished and the Lakertyan people empowered, the Doctor and Mel depart in the TARDIS, ready for their next adventure.
