Act 1

This act immediately thrusts the Doctor, Ace, and Shou Yuing into a confrontation. Brigadier Bambera attempts to arrest a group of medieval knights in a brewery, but Mordred, the knight leader, recognizes the Doctor as Merlin and declares his mother Morgaine's ancient animosity and intent to face him. Mordred and his knights then retreat. Concurrently, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, flying a helicopter, establishes a military exclusion zone around Carbury, signaling a larger institutional response to the unfolding events. The Doctor, Ace, and Shou Yuing encounter Bambera again, who engages in a physical altercation with Ancelyn, a knight who has shed his armor. The Doctor dismisses their struggle as a display of "credentials" while warning his companions about the true, underlying threat: sorcery. The narrative shifts to Mordred, who initiates a powerful ritual in a nearby castle, speaking of merging "two universes." This ritual manifests physically in the Gore Crow Hotel, where an ancient scabbard quivers violently and then flies across the room. As the ritual intensifies, causing lights to flicker and objects to fall, the Doctor collapses, sensing Morgaine's imminent arrival. Morgaine appears in the castle, directly challenging the Doctor, whom she also identifies as Merlin, declaring their impending confrontation as their "last battlefield." The act concludes with the aftermath of Morgaine's arrival, as the Doctor, Bambera, and Ancelyn regroup at the hotel, and the Brigadier heads towards Carbury, setting the stage for a broader conflict.

Act 2

The second act escalates the conflict, propelling the Doctor and his allies into active investigation while facing direct threats from Morgaine. The Doctor, Ace, and Warmsly investigate the archaeological dig site where the mysterious scabbard was discovered. Ace, with her characteristic disregard for conventional methods, uses explosives to create a massive hole, revealing an ancient, concrete-lined tunnel beneath the lake. Meanwhile, the Brigadier and his pilot, Lavel, experience the direct impact of Morgaine's power. As they approach Carbury, their helicopter encounters severe radio interference and is subsequently struck by energy bolts from Morgaine, forcing a crash landing. Lavel sustains an injury, but the Brigadier, exhibiting his seasoned resilience, takes his service revolver and heads towards the village, seemingly unfazed by the extraordinary circumstances. Simultaneously, Brigadier Bambera and Ancelyn continue their strained alliance, jogging through the woods to locate the Doctor, with Ancelyn acknowledging the Doctor's unpredictable nature. Morgaine and Mordred, positioned in a churchyard, observe the Brigadier's downed helicopter. Morgaine demonstrates her formidable magical abilities by directly attacking the aircraft, highlighting the limitations of modern technology against her ancient sorcery. The Doctor and Ace venture into the newly discovered tunnel, which mysteriously seals behind them, leading them to a hidden spacecraft. They discover the tunnel's advanced construction, built in the eighth century, suggesting an anachronistic origin. The Brigadier then encounters Morgaine at the church gate, engaging in a tense but surprisingly civil exchange. They establish a temporary truce for a "Remembrance ceremony," but Morgaine ominously warns the Brigadier of their inevitable, deadly future confrontation. Inside the spacecraft, the Doctor uses his voice to open a sealed door, revealing it is keyed to Merlin's voice pattern, further cementing his enigmatic connection to the legendary figure. The act concludes with the Brigadier commandeering Shou Yuing's car, determined to reach the heart of the action, as the various factions converge on the unfolding crisis.
