Ghost Light Part 2

The Doctor and Ace navigate a sinister Victorian-era mansion, thwarting Josiah's plans to harness an ancient spaceship's power and evade his own transformation into a monstrous creature.

In the Victorian-era mansion of Josiah Samuel Smith, the Doctor and Ace discover a sinister plot involving an ancient stone spaceship and experiments on human husks. Josiah, seeking to restore the British Empire, plans to harness the ship's power, which is connected to an energy source that can cause transformations in humans. The Doctor and Ace must stop Josiah and his accomplices, including Nimrod and Gwendoline, while navigating the complex web of characters and their motivations. As the story unfolds, the Doctor and Ace face various challenges, including encounters with giant insects, a mysterious Control entity, and a transformation process that threatens to engulf the entire household. The Doctor's knowledge of the TARDIS and his experience with various alien technologies help him unravel the mysteries of the spaceship and Josiah's plans. Ultimately, the Doctor and Ace succeed in stopping Josiah and freeing the trapped characters, but not before facing a climactic confrontation with the consequences of Josiah's actions.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor observing Gwendoline in the study, where she reveals her father's absence in Java, sent there by Uncle Josiah after witnessing something in the cellar. Simultaneously, Ace faces a perilous encounter in the cellar, trapped by giant insects. Nimrod intervenes, using a lantern to repel the creatures and rescue Ace. Their escape is complicated by a mysterious, closed door and the insects' persistent pursuit. Upstairs, the Doctor confronts Josiah about Ace's whereabouts, deftly sidestepping Josiah's offer to collaborate in murder. Josiah, in turn, attempts to mislead the Doctor with a staged "puppet show" involving maids and a candle, but the Doctor sees through the deception, only to be held at gunpoint by the maids. Back in the cellar, Ace, in a struggle with Nimrod over a brass-tipped cane, accidentally strikes a golden wall screen, releasing a hissing gas and causing both them and the insects to recoil. An alarm sounds throughout the mansion, and the Doctor, using a Geiger counter on Josiah, forces him to lead the way to the cellar. There, the Doctor and Ace reunite amidst the steam and chaos, discovering the ancient stone spaceship and its connection to the energy release. Josiah, now cornered, reveals his experiments with "husks," his past selves, and his intent to harness the ship's power, brandishing a gun to assert his ownership over the alien technology and his grand, evolutionary designs.

Act 2

Following Josiah's revelation in the cellar, the Doctor and Ace attempt to stabilize the volatile energy emanating from the stone spaceship. Josiah, agitated, is exposed to the gushing steam, a catalyst that accelerates his ongoing transformation. As the husks open the door, Ace and the Doctor, along with Nimrod, scramble into the lift, where they encounter "Control," a disembodied voice pleading for "freeness." Josiah, in a desperate act, seals the lower observatory, trapping Control and further indicating his own evolving state. Upstairs, the Doctor and Ace realize Josiah is rapidly changing into one of the husks. Josiah retreats to the attic, where he confronts Reverend Matthews, who is also undergoing a grotesque transformation into an ape-like creature, confirming the horrifying nature of Josiah's experiments. While Ace sleeps, the Doctor "fixes" the spaceship, then reanimates Inspector MacKenzie, a preserved husk from 1881, to assist with the investigation. Ace awakens to find herself dressed in restrictive Victorian attire, a symbolic imposition of Josiah's era. Nimrod, under the Doctor's influence, experiences a profound "race memory" of ancient times, hinting at deeper connections to the "Burning One." Control, meanwhile, becomes active in the lift shaft, seeking its own liberation. The Doctor explains the inherent danger of the ancient entity within the spaceship, which Josiah wishes to keep dormant. Ace discovers the specimen cabinet's husks are now alive, escalating the immediate threat. Control, in the cellar, breaks the wall screen, allowing light to flood the chamber. Ace and MacKenzie then uncover the horrifying "collection" in the attic: the husks of Josiah's family and the transformed Matthews, revealing the full extent of Josiah's depravity just as the "fresh-faced" Josiah reappears, commanding his reanimated husks to attack Ace.

Act 3

The act opens with the immediate, visceral confrontation in the attic as the transformed Josiah, now "fresh-faced" and commanding, unleashes his reanimated husks—Gwendoline and Mrs Pritchard—upon Ace. Ace struggles fiercely against her attackers, attempting to fend off their grasp and escape the attic. Simultaneously, Inspector MacKenzie, newly reanimated and still grappling with the bizarre reality of the mansion, finds himself entangled with the original, inert husk of Josiah, struggling to break free from its grip. Ace, in a desperate move, runs to a window and raises the blind, hoping to use light against her adversaries, but the new Josiah, unfazed, declares his immunity to such weaknesses, asserting his evolved state and no longer needing to "crouch in shadows." Mrs Pritchard, now an active husk, grabs Ace by the hair, highlighting the raw, animalistic nature beneath the Victorian veneer. Josiah, confident in his power, taunts the Doctor through Ace, promising to make him "squirm." The scene intensifies as MacKenzie finally breaks free from the clutches of the inert Josiah husk, signaling his full reawakening and readiness to engage in the unfolding chaos. The segment concludes with this heightened state of conflict, leaving the ultimate resolution of the Doctor's plan and the fate of the characters hanging in the balance, as the forces of Josiah and Control converge.
