Act 1

The narrative opens in the secluded cellar of a Victorian household, where servants deliver food to a confined, howling entity. Simultaneously, Reverend Ernest Matthews arrives at Gabriel Chase, expressing impatience to meet its master, Josiah Samuel Smith. The TARDIS materializes in the attic, bringing the Doctor and Ace to a room filled with taxidermy and scientific equipment. Ace identifies the era as Victorian Earth, and the Doctor notes the use of preservative agents. They inadvertently alert an unseen presence via a telephone. As the household servants flee the premises at six o'clock, fearing the dark, the Doctor and Ace decide to formally introduce themselves. In a corridor, the Doctor discovers a snuffbox with the initials 'RFC.' A blond man, Redvers, confronts them, believing the snuffbox is proof in his quest to find the renowned explorer Redvers Fenn-Cooper, whom he believes is held captive by Josiah Samuel Smith. Redvers, revealed to be Fenn-Cooper himself, is disoriented and believes he is searching for his own lost self. He recounts a terrifying encounter with a 'light' that drove him mad. Mrs. Pritchard and other servants forcefully apprehend Redvers, twisting his arm and confining him, despite the Doctor's objections. Nimrod, the butler, assures the Doctor of Redvers' safety and invites them to the drawing room, drawing the protagonists deeper into the house's strange affairs.

Act 2

The Doctor and Ace join Reverend Matthews and Gwendoline in the drawing room, where Matthews immediately insults Ace's attire and the Doctor's perceived theories. Josiah Samuel Smith enters, cloaked in dust and dark glasses, and the room's lights dim. He engages the Doctor and Matthews in a debate about Darwinian evolution, presenting his studies on moths adapting to industry, subtly challenging Matthews' rigid views. Meanwhile, a bright light emanates from Redvers' confinement room, causing Redvers to scream and Josiah to recoil in pain and fear from its glare. This incident reveals Josiah's vulnerability and the dangerous nature of the 'light.' Nimrod, the Neanderthal-like butler, later kneels before a glowing golden oval screen in the cellar, only to be struck down by an unseen force. A disembodied 'Voice' from the confined entity declares, 'I escaped,' confirming its sentience and freedom. During dinner, Ace confronts the Doctor, revealing Gabriel Chase is the house from her traumatic past in Perivale in 1983, a place she swore never to return to after a firebombing incident. She describes sensing an 'alien horror' during her previous visit. Josiah, now desperate, seeks the Doctor's assistance to defeat this 'vile and base creature,' offering a substantial sum of money.

Act 3

With Josiah Samuel Smith's desperate plea for assistance against the escaped 'vile and base creature,' the narrative pivots towards direct action. The Doctor, uninterested in money but intrigued by the alien threat, implicitly accepts the challenge, recognizing the gravity of the situation. Simultaneously, Josiah orders Mrs. Pritchard to neutralize Reverend Matthews, who is subsequently drugged and incapacitated, removing a significant distraction from the unfolding crisis. While Gwendoline sings a song about the zoo, Ace, still reeling from the resurfacing trauma of her past and the house's connection to it, takes independent initiative. She descends into the house's depths via the lift, heading directly towards the location of the newly escaped entity, unaware of the full extent of the danger she faces. Mrs. Pritchard observes Ace's descent with a knowing, sinister smile, underscoring the perilous path Ace has chosen and the deeper machinations at play within Gabriel Chase. This moment marks the protagonists' direct engagement with the primary threat, setting the stage for the climax of 'Part One.'
