Act 1

Fenric, an ancient evil entity, awakens from seventeen centuries of imprisonment, having possessed the body of Judson. He initiates a sinister plan to unleash a deadly chemical gas, threatening to contaminate the world. The Doctor and Ace find themselves caught in the immediate crossfire, facing a firing squad alongside Russian soldiers Sorin and Vershinin, whose timely intervention saves them. The Doctor quickly discerns that they are entangled in "Fenric's games," a complex and deadly contest of chess. He identifies key figures like Judson and Millington as Fenric's "Wolves," pawns manipulated by the ancient being. An initial attempt by the Doctor and Ace to retrieve a vital chess set from Commander Millington's office results in a booby trap, a chemical gas release, and an explosion, highlighting the escalating danger. This setback leads them to realize Kathleen Dudman possesses another crucial chess set. As the haemovores, Fenric's vampiric creatures, begin to spread and convert humans, the situation grows increasingly dire. Millington's brutal betrayal and murder of Vershinin underscores the depth of Fenric's infiltration and the ruthlessness of his agents. This shocking event forces a fragile and unexpected alliance between the Doctor, Ace, Captain Bates (who now understands the true enemy), and Sorin, as they race against time to secure Kathleen's chess set, the Doctor's only means to counter Fenric's game.

Act 2

Ace helps Kathleen and baby Audrey escape the bunk room as haemovores overrun the camp, instructing Kathleen to seek refuge in London. Judson, now fully empowered, orders the Ancient One to transport the chemical poison to the ocean and ruthlessly eliminates other haemovores, causing Jean and Phyllis to crumble to dust. The Doctor, having secured the chess set, prepares his counter-strategy in the munitions bunker, setting up the board for his confrontation with Fenric. Meanwhile, Captain Bates, seeking vengeance for Vershinin, confronts and kills Millington in the Decrypt Room, shifting the balance of human alliances. The Doctor engages the Ancient One in the tunnel, revealing its tragic origin as the last survivor of a future Earth devastated by chemicals, brought back by Fenric to ensure that very future. Ace, witnessing the unfolding game, deduces the crucial solution: the black and white pawns must unite. However, Sorin reveals his true nature as another "Wolf of Fenric," his eyes glowing green, and exposes Ace's true identity as Kathleen's future daughter, a pawn in Fenric's grand scheme. To break Fenric's psychic control over the Ancient One, the Doctor makes a painful choice, cruelly disavowing Ace and shattering her faith in him. This act frees the Ancient One, which then turns on Sorin, trapping him in the containment chamber and releasing the deadly gas, leading to their mutual destruction and Fenric's defeat.

Act 3

In the aftermath of Fenric's dramatic defeat, the Doctor and Ace escape the collapsing bunker, but the emotional fallout of the Doctor's calculated cruelty lingers. Ace confronts the Doctor, deeply wounded by his harsh words and the revelation of her own manipulated lineage. The Doctor, with a heavy heart, explains his actions were a necessary deception, a desperate gambit to shatter her unyielding faith in him, which Fenric was exploiting to control the Ancient One. This painful truth, however, leaves Ace grappling with profound emotional turmoil. The revelation that Kathleen, the frightened mother she just helped save, is her own future mother intensifies Ace's deeply rooted hatred and resentment towards her. The Doctor, recognizing the depth of her internal struggle, guides Ace towards a symbolic act of confrontation and healing. He encourages her to dive into the turbulent sea at Maiden's Point, a place steeped in Fenric's dark influence. Underwater, Ace experiences a profound and cathartic moment of connection, hearing both her own voice and Kathleen's, a powerful auditory manifestation of her conflicting emotions beginning to reconcile. Emerging from the water, cleansed and resolute, Ace declares she is no longer scared, signifying her personal triumph over the "dangerous undercurrents" of her past and her emotional healing from Fenric's curse. The Doctor confirms that the metaphorical and literal dangers have subsided, marking a poignant and transformative resolution for Ace.
