Mineshaft

A narrow vertical excavation carved deep into unstable rock, its walls slick with seepage and blackened by ancient fire-setting. Jagged timber supports groan under the weight of unimaginable pressure from above and below, the air thick with the reek of diesel exhaust and wet slate that clings to throat and nostrils. A rickety cage hoist hangs motionless at the lip ten meters up, while overhead floodlights flicker in sullen rhythm with the distant churn of machinery. The wooden floorboards sag between rotten joists, each footstep rewarded by a groan that resonates through the shaft. Congealed mud oozes between the rough-hewn crossties, and a single frayed safety line dangles from a half-torn anchor plate, limp as a dead vine. Here, the Doctor and companions move through a space designed to collapse, where every surface yearns to bury its intruders alive.
