Mighty Kublai Khan

Marco Polo attempts to secure his passage home by presenting a precious caravan to Kublai Khan, while the Doctor and his companions seek to recover their stolen Tardis and prevent a dangerous political marriage.

Marco Polo's journey continues as he escorts the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan towards Kublai Khan's Summer Palace in Shang-Tu. He hopes to gain favor with the Khan and secure his return to Venice by gifting him the Doctor's seemingly magical caravan. However, the travelers' efforts to retrieve their time-traveling vehicle, the Tardis, are complicated by political intrigue and personal dilemmas.

The episode opens with Tegana, a warrior allied with Noghai, attempting to capture the travelers. Ian's brave intervention saves Susan, but Marco remains wary, suspecting the Doctor's group. Tensions rise as Ian admits to stealing the key to the Tardis, and Marco grapples with whether or not to believe his impossible claims of traveling through time.

Ping-Cho, betrothed to an older man in an arranged marriage, runs away, seeking to avoid her fate. Ian volunteers to find her, but Tegana suspects he is more interested in recovering the Tardis. Ian eventually finds Ping-Cho, who has been robbed of her money while seeking passage away from Marco's caravan. They discover that the Tardis has been stolen and is being transported along the old Karakorum road.

Meanwhile, Marco and the rest of the group proceed to Shang-Tu, where they are granted an audience with Kublai Khan. The Doctor refuses to kowtow, causing a stir, but the Khan, amused by the old man's defiance, invites him to ride in his carriage. The Khan reveals that Noghai's army is encamped at Karakorum, raising suspicions about Tegana's loyalty. As Marco prepares to present his case, he is unsure about Ian's motives and fears treachery. Barbara confronts Marco, showing her and the group's disapproval of Ping-Cho's marriage. Marco sends Tegana in search of Ian and Ping-Cho.

The episode concludes with the Doctor and the Khan bonding over their shared ailments, while the travelers and Marco await the arrival of Tegana and the resolution of their intertwined fates, uncertain if they will be successful in the recovery of the Tardis.

Act 1

The episode opens with Tegana's violent attempt to capture Susan, which Ian and Marco thwart. Marco demands the Tardis key from the Doctor, which Ian admits to stealing to protect Ping-Cho. Marco, distrustful of Ian's lie, decides to take the Tardis to Kublai Khan, intending to use it as a gift to secure his passage home. This decision solidifies the travelers' predicament, as their means of returning home is now in Marco's hands and destined for the Khan. Ping-Cho, desperate to avoid her arranged marriage, flees the caravan. Ian volunteers to find her, a decision met with Tegana's suspicion, who believes Ian's true motive is to recover the Tardis. Marco's refusal to believe Ian's impossible claims of time travel, coupled with his judgment of Ian's character based on the key incident, highlights the deep chasm of understanding and trust between them. This act establishes the core conflicts: the travelers' urgent quest to retrieve the Tardis, Ping-Cho's flight from her unwanted marriage, and Tegana's underlying manipulative nature, setting the stage for the unfolding journey to Shang-Tu and the complex web of loyalties and betrayals.

Act 2

Ian's search for Ping-Cho leads him to a way station where Ping-Cho was robbed by a man posing as a caravan driver. Ian discovers this same man stole the Tardis, diverting it onto the disused Karakorum road, significantly complicating its recovery. This revelation transforms the travelers' objective from merely retrieving the Tardis from Marco to tracking it down after a separate theft. Back at the main caravan, Tegana manipulates Marco, suggesting Ian's true motive for finding Ping-Cho is to retrieve the Tardis, not merely to ensure her safety. Barbara and Susan openly defy Marco, expressing their strong opposition to Ping-Cho's arranged marriage, further straining their relationship with him. Swayed by Tegana's insinuation and the group's open defiance, Marco sends Tegana after Ian and Ping-Cho, ostensibly to ensure their safety and confirm Ian's loyalty, but inadvertently placing them in further danger from Tegana's treacherous agenda. This act significantly raises the stakes, introducing new threats and deepening existing conflicts.

Act 3

The Doctor, Barbara, Susan, and Marco arrive at Kublai Khan's opulent Summer Palace. The Doctor defiantly refuses to kowtow to the Khan, an act that surprisingly amuses the powerful ruler, leading to an unexpected rapport between the two old men. This interaction establishes a potential new alliance for the travelers within the Khan's court. The Khan reveals Noghai's army is encamped at Karakorum, directly implicating Tegana's loyalty and raising Marco's suspicions about his true mission. This revelation foreshadows a major political confrontation and confirms Tegana's duplicity. The Khan commands Marco to bring Tegana directly to him upon his arrival, signaling an impending investigation into Tegana's actions and placing him in immediate peril. Despite Barbara's pleas to wait for Ian and Ping-Cho, Marco insists they must proceed with the Khan, leaving the fate of their companions and the Tardis uncertain as new political dangers emerge and the group is drawn deeper into the Khan's affairs. The episode concludes with the Doctor and Khan bonding, while the immediate resolution of Ian, Ping-Cho, and the Tardis is deferred.
