The Temple of Evil

When the Doctor's companion, Barbara, is mistaken for a reincarnated Aztec high priest, she decides to use her newfound influence to end the practice of human sacrifice, risking the disruption of history itself.

The Doctor and his companions, Barbara, Ian, and Susan, arrive in an Aztec tomb via the TARDIS. Barbara, a history teacher, accidentally triggers a series of events when she puts on an armband, leading the Aztecs to believe she is the reincarnation of the High Priest Yetaxa. Seizing the opportunity, Barbara decides to use her perceived divinity to abolish the gruesome practice of human sacrifice, believing it will improve the Aztecs’ fate when Cortes arrives. However, the Doctor warns her of the dangers of tampering with history.

Barbara's attempt to change the Aztec culture puts her at odds with Tlotoxl, the High Priest of Sacrifice, who sees human sacrifice as essential to appease the gods and maintain his power. Meanwhile, Ian is thrust into the role of a warrior, training with Ixta, a jealous rival, escalating tensions. The Doctor seeks guidance from Cameca in the Garden of Peace in attempt to find allies and insight into the temple.

Tensions rise as Barbara's influence grows, challenging the established order of the Aztec society. As the day of the rain ceremony approaches, Barbara intends to use the event to demonstrate the futility of human sacrifice. Despite the Doctor's warnings and the potential consequences, Barbara is determined to rewrite history for the better, culminating an intense conflict between tradition and change, leaving the Doctor to confront the potential ramifications of Barbara’s actions.

Act 1

The narrative commences with the TARDIS materializing within the confines of an ancient Aztec tomb, immediately immersing the companions in a historically rich, yet perilous, environment. Barbara, a history teacher, quickly identifies the tomb's period and purpose, demonstrating her specialized knowledge of Aztec culture and artifacts. Her academic curiosity, however, leads her to don a distinctive armband found on a jeweled corpse, an action that inadvertently triggers the central conflict. Almost immediately, she is discovered by Autloc, the High Priest of Knowledge, who, upon seeing the armband, mistakes her for the reincarnated High Priest Yetaxa. This pivotal event establishes Barbara's new, powerful, and dangerous identity within the Aztec hierarchy. Meanwhile, the TARDIS door mysteriously seals, trapping the Doctor, Ian, and Susan within the temple complex, effectively cutting off their immediate escape route. They soon encounter Autloc and the formidable Tlotoxl, the High Priest of Sacrifice, whose contrasting views on Aztec traditions, particularly the gruesome practice of human sacrifice, are quickly evident. The act effectively sets the stage, introducing the core characters, the exotic and threatening setting, and the extraordinary circumstances that have thrust Barbara into a position of divine authority, laying the groundwork for the moral and historical challenges that will define the episode.

Act 2

With Barbara now established as the revered Yetaxa, the companions' entanglement with Aztec society deepens, and the stakes rise considerably. The Doctor issues a stern warning to Barbara, emphasizing the profound dangers of interfering with established history and the dire consequences should her true identity as a mortal be discovered by the suspicious priests. Simultaneously, Tlotoxl, the High Priest of Sacrifice and a staunch traditionalist, begins to assert his influence, strategically integrating Ian into the Aztec military structure. Ian is assigned to train as a warrior under Ixta, a jealous and ambitious rival, which not only places him in a position of authority but also introduces immediate personal conflict and danger. While Ian navigates his new, uncomfortable role, the Doctor, ever the intellectual, seeks knowledge and potential allies, finding a connection with the wise elder Cameca in the tranquil Garden of Peace. The growing tension culminates when Ian learns the full extent of his warrior duties: he must participate directly in the impending human sacrifice for the Rain God, forcing a severe moral crisis for him. This revelation prompts the Doctor to reiterate his strict non-interference policy, highlighting the ethical dilemma facing his companions.

Act 3

As the moment of the rain ceremony and its accompanying human sacrifice draws near, the narrative reaches a critical juncture. The Doctor, acutely aware of the historical ramifications and the potential for disaster, makes a final, desperate appeal to Barbara, urging her to adhere strictly to the principle of non-interference, even in the face of such a barbaric ritual. However, Barbara, now fully embracing her perceived divinity and driven by a powerful moral imperative to prevent the loss of innocent life, defiantly rejects the Doctor's warnings. She declares her unwavering intention to use her status as Yetaxa to abolish human sacrifice entirely, articulating a grand vision of guiding the Aztecs towards a more civilized and humane future, believing this will protect them from the eventual arrival of Cortes. This decisive declaration marks a point of no return, setting Barbara on a direct collision course with deeply entrenched Aztec traditions and the powerful High Priest Tlotoxl. The act concludes with a stark image: Barbara is escorted by warriors to the sacrifice platform, where the victim is already positioned, poised for the ritual. The Doctor and Susan are left behind, helpless witnesses to Barbara's bold and potentially catastrophic intervention, as the episode builds to an immediate, high-stakes confrontation.
