The Final Test

The Doctor, Steven, and Dodo must win the Toymaker's deadly games to escape his world, where failure means eternal imprisonment and assimilation into his twisted collection of living toys, but victory risks utter annihilation.

The Doctor and his companions, Steven and Dodo, find themselves trapped in the realm of the Celestial Toymaker, a powerful being who forces them to play a series of bizarre and deadly games. The Toymaker reveals that he has removed the Doctor's power of speech, hindering his ability to strategize and communicate effectively. To escape, they must win these games, but the Toymaker warns that losing will turn them into dolls within his collection forever.

The travelers are separated, with Steven and Dodo forced to participate in a hopscotch game over electrified triangles, overseen by the Toymaker's mischievous and cheating assistant, Cyril. Cyril constantly bends and breaks the rules to his advantage, frustrating Steven and Dodo, and using tricks and illusions to torment them. Throughout the hopscotch game, they face myriad obstacles, including invisible barriers, slippery powder, and deceptive distractions, testing their teamwork and reliance.

Meanwhile, the Doctor is engaged in a complex game of Trilogi, a puzzle requiring intense concentration. The Toymaker attempts to disrupt him by taunting him and offering him the power to corrupt and destroy, the Doctor refuses and focuses on solving the puzzle. He restores the Doctor's voice as a further taunt, believing it will further distract him. The Toymaker reveals that as the Doctor's game nears its end, so does Cyril's. Steven and Dodo are tiring and the Toymaker believes his friend can win.

As both games progress the Toymaker makes it known to the Doctor that his friends are close to despairing. Eventually, Steven grows weary of Cyril's deceitful tactics and threatens him, but is stopped by an invisible barrier. Dodo continues to play fair until Cyril uses red ink as an illusion to trick her into thinking that he has hurt himself. Cyril, in his arrogance, accidentally falls into his own trap, slipping on the powder he placed on triangle number 11, and is disintegrated. His death shocks Steven and Dodo but they continue playing the game to reach the Tardis.

The Doctor then realizes that the final move in his game will cause the Toymaker's world, along with anyone still in it, to vanish. He must find a way to complete the game without destroying himself and his companions. After they reach the Tardis and it is confirmed that it is indeed the real one, the Toymaker interferes with the ship. The Doctor debates with the Toymaker on leaving until an idea comes to him. Mimicking the Toymaker's voice to bypass the game's rules, the Doctor tricks the game into completing itself, causing the Toymaker's world to collapse. The Doctor and his companions escape in the TARDIS just as the Toymaker's realm is destroyed. They have won but they know that the immortal Toymaker is not destroyed, and they will meet again in another time.

Act 1

Steven and Dodo enter the "Tardis Hopscotch" game, immediately encountering Cyril, the Toymaker's mischievous assistant. Cyril introduces the game's rules, which involve throwing dice and jumping between numbered triangles, but quickly reveals the deadly consequence of stepping off the path: an electrified floor. From the outset, Cyril demonstrates his propensity for cheating, bending rules to his advantage, such as forcing Steven back to the start if he lands on an occupied triangle. Meanwhile, the Doctor continues his complex game of Trilogi, observed and taunted by the Toymaker. The Toymaker reveals his intention to turn Steven and Dodo into dolls, increasing the stakes for the companions. Cyril's tactics escalate; he uses a gorilla mask to scare Dodo, further highlighting his manipulative nature. Steven, frustrated by the blatant unfairness, attempts to abandon the game and directly reach the TARDIS, but an invisible barrier blocks his path, underscoring the Toymaker's absolute control and the necessity of adhering to his twisted rules. The Toymaker, believing it will distract him, restores the Doctor's voice, but the Doctor remains focused on his puzzle. This initial act establishes the oppressive atmosphere of the Toymaker's realm, the immediate danger to the companions, and the formidable, deceptive nature of their adversaries, setting the stage for the escalating challenges ahead.

Act 2

The hopscotch game intensifies as Cyril's cheating becomes more brazen and dangerous. He strategically places slippery powder on triangle 11, setting a trap for his opponents. Dodo, despite Steven's repeated warnings about Cyril's deceit, falls for a trick when Cyril fakes an injury using red ink, leading her to step out of bounds. This moment of vulnerability and misplaced empathy nearly costs them. However, Cyril's arrogance proves his undoing; in his eagerness to celebrate a perceived victory, he slips on his own strategically placed powder on triangle 11, falling into the electrified death trap and disintegrating in a flash. This shocking, albeit deserved, demise of Cyril removes one immediate antagonist but leaves Steven and Dodo shaken. Motivated by the grim reality of their situation and the Toymaker's explicit threats, they push forward, successfully reaching the TARDIS. Concurrently, the Doctor, nearing the completion of his Trilogi game, makes a crucial realization: the final move will not merely end the game but cause the Toymaker's entire world, along with anyone still in it, to vanish. The Toymaker confirms this dire consequence, explaining that total annihilation awaits the Doctor and his companions if they remain. The companions verify the TARDIS's authenticity by its characteristic hum, only for the Toymaker to immediately interfere with the ship, trapping them and transforming their hard-won victory into a new, existential dilemma.

Act 3

Trapped inside the TARDIS, the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo face an impossible choice. The Doctor reveals the full, devastating truth: completing the final move of the Trilogi game will cause the Toymaker's world to vanish, and if they are present, they will vanish with it. The Toymaker, being immortal, will simply rebuild his realm, leaving them permanently destroyed. Steven, demonstrating immense courage and loyalty, offers to make the final move himself, sacrificing his life to ensure the Doctor and Dodo's escape, an offer the Doctor firmly rejects. Faced with this seemingly inescapable predicament, the Doctor engages in intense deliberation, searching for a loophole. He turns on the scanner, engaging the Toymaker in a verbal exchange, feigning a debate about the final move. This interaction allows the Doctor to subtly gather information and buy time. A sudden realization strikes him: the game's pieces only obey the Toymaker's voice. Armed with this crucial insight, the Doctor prepares. Inside the TARDIS, he secretly presets the controls for dematerialization. Then, with cunning precision, he mimics the Toymaker's distinctive voice, commanding the Trilogi game to execute its final move. As the last piece falls into place, the TARDIS dematerializes in a burst of light, escaping just as the Toymaker's world explodes into nothingness. Steven and Dodo celebrate their narrow victory, and the Doctor explains his ingenious trick. He cautions them that while they have won this battle, the immortal Toymaker is not destroyed, hinting at future, inevitable encounters. The episode concludes with a final, unsettling touch: Cyril's sweets, a seemingly innocuous prize, cause the Doctor a sharp pain, a lingering reminder that even in victory, the Toymaker's influence persists.
