A Holiday for the Doctor
A time-traveling Doctor with a ghastly toothache lands in Tombstone, 1881, where he must find a dentist amidst the brewing conflict between the Clanton brothers and Doc Holliday, while his companions embrace the Wild West adventure.
The Doctor, accompanied by Steven and Dodo, arrives in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881, due to a malfunction of the Tardis which he initially masks as a simple holiday. Plagued by a severe toothache, the Doctor seeks a dentist in the Wild West town. His arrival coincides with the tension between the Clanton brothers and Doc Holliday.
The Clantons, along with Seth Harper, plot to ambush Doc Holliday in the Last Chance Saloon, seeking revenge for the death of their brother Reuben. Meanwhile, Steven and Dodo, excited by the prospect of the Wild West, indulge in cowboy and cowgirl attire, drawing the attention of Wyatt Earp, who brings them to the Sheriff's office for questioning. The Doctor identifies himself with a series of false names, as part of a traveling theater troupe, to avoid suspicion.
The Sheriff directs the Doctor to Doc Holliday, who has set up a dental practice in town, much to the chagrin of Marshal Bat Masterson. Steven and Dodo find themselves unwittingly embroiled in the conflict when they check into the Last Chance Saloon, where their presence raises the suspicions of the Clantons. Ike Clanton directs the other members of the gang to investigate Steven and Dodo while he waits for Doc Holliday to arrive.
Meanwhile, the Doctor encounters Doc Holliday, who is in the midst of a romantic encounter with Kate. Holliday reluctantly agrees to treat the Doctor's toothache but warns him of the impending danger from the Clantons. Seth Harper identifies the Doctor as Doc Holliday, mistaking his attire and unfamiliarity with firearms as signs of the notorious gunslinger's eccentricity. The Doctor does not identify himself by not correcting the mistaken identity. Holliday, amused by the situation, loans the Doctor a gun and hat, effectively pushing him into the role of bait. As the Doctor makes his way toward the Last Chance Saloon, Steven and Dodo are held hostage. The episode ends with the Doctor walking towards the saloon, unknowingly walking in to the Clanton's trap.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative opens in Tombstone, Arizona, 1881, introducing the Clanton brothers—Ike, Billy, and Phineas—who arrive with a clear agenda: revenge against Doc Holliday for the death of their brother, Reuben. They plan an ambush at the Last Chance Saloon, coordinating with Seth Harper, a paid associate. Simultaneously, the TARDIS materializes in a livery stable, bringing the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo into this volatile setting. The Doctor suffers from a debilitating toothache, compelling him to seek a dentist, while his companions, particularly Steven and Dodo, are captivated by the romanticized notion of the Wild West, quickly adopting cowboy and cowgirl attire. Their enthusiasm contrasts sharply with the Doctor's discomfort and practical concerns. Kate, Doc Holliday's romantic interest, overhears the Clantons' plot at the saloon and rushes to warn Holliday, who is in the process of establishing a dental practice on Main Street. Holliday, however, dismisses her fears, asserting his defiant stance against anyone who would prevent him from walking freely. Shortly after, the newly arrived time-travelers encounter Wyatt Earp, the city Marshal, who, along with Sheriff Bat Masterson, questions their presence. The Doctor, employing quick thinking, invents false identities for his group, presenting them as a traveling theatrical troupe "between engagements," with himself as "Doctor Caligari." This deception, while initially successful in placating the lawmen, leads to Masterson directing the Doctor to Doc Holliday for his dental needs, setting the stage for the Doctor's unwitting involvement in the town's brewing conflict. The act concludes with the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo heading towards Holliday's practice, the Doctor still focused solely on alleviating his pain.

As the Doctor proceeds towards Doc Holliday's dental office, Steven and Dodo, still immersed in their Wild West fantasy, decide to check into the Last Chance Saloon, the very location where the Clantons are plotting their ambush. They book three rooms, including one for their "friend," inadvertently drawing the attention of the Clanton brothers. Billy Clanton seizes the guest book, noting Steven's name and occupation as a "singer," which raises suspicions about Holliday having an accomplice. Meanwhile, the Doctor arrives at Holliday's deserted-looking dental office, only to interrupt Holliday and Kate in a passionate embrace in the back room. Despite the awkward encounter and Holliday's initial reluctance, the Doctor insists on immediate treatment for his excruciating toothache. Holliday, a man of unconventional methods, proceeds to extract the tooth without anaesthetic, much to the Doctor's dismay. While the Doctor is being treated, Seth Harper, who has been dispatched by Ike Clanton to locate Holliday, peers through the window. He spots the Doctor, still dressed in his distinctive, albeit anachronistic, dapper clothing, and mistakenly identifies him as Doc Holliday, noting his perceived eccentricity and lack of a visible weapon. Harper extends an invitation for "Holliday" to join the Clantons at the saloon for a drink. Holliday, having overheard the exchange and finding the mistaken identity amusing, seizes the opportunity. He loans the Doctor his gun and hat, effectively transforming him into a decoy. Holliday then sends the Doctor directly to the Last Chance Saloon, fully aware that he is walking into a dangerous trap intended for himself, thus manipulating the Doctor into becoming unwitting bait. The act culminates with the Doctor, now visually disguised as Doc Holliday and armed, making his way towards the saloon, completely oblivious to the perilous situation he is entering.

The episode rapidly escalates towards its climax within the confines of the Last Chance Saloon. Steven and Dodo, having checked in and now waiting for the Doctor, find themselves cornered by the Clanton brothers and Seth Harper. Their earlier booking of three rooms and Steven's stated occupation as a "singer" have solidified the Clantons' suspicion that Steven is an associate of Doc Holliday. The Clantons, specifically Ike, confront Steven and Dodo, demanding Steven perform a song for them. When Steven attempts to stall, citing a lack of practice, the Clantons draw their guns, making it clear they are holding the companions hostage. A gunshot rings out, intensifying the already palpable tension and leaving Dodo screaming, underscoring the immediate and grave danger they face. Simultaneously, the Doctor, still under the illusion of a friendly social gathering and completely unaware of the developing hostage situation, ambles leisurely down Main Street towards the Last Chance Saloon. He is now fully equipped with Doc Holliday's gun and hat, a disguise that makes him a perfect, albeit unwitting, target for the Clantons' ambush. The narrative skillfully builds suspense by intercutting between the perilous scene inside the saloon and the Doctor's serene, oblivious approach. The episode concludes on a dramatic cliffhanger: the Doctor is moments away from walking directly into the Clantons' trap, where his companions are already held at gunpoint, and the ominous ballad's lyrics about "blood upon the sawdust" foreshadow the violent confrontation that is about to unfold. The Doctor's arrival, mistaken identity, and the companions' capture converge, leaving the audience to anticipate the immediate and dangerous consequences of this intricate web of misunderstandings and revenge.
