The Savages Episode 1

When the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo arrive on a planet he believes to be a peaceful future utopia, they uncover a dark secret behind its prosperity: a city of advanced beings exploiting a primitive race for their life energy.

The Doctor, along with companions Steven and Dodo, arrives in what he believes to be a future age of peace and prosperity. They land the TARDIS in a rocky ravine. The Doctor expresses confidence in his location, but their surroundings soon suggest otherwise. While the Doctor explores, Steven and Dodo encounter primitive-looking figures in animal skins, challenging the Doctor's initial assessment of a peaceful future. Steven goes to look for the Doctor; Dodo is discovered by a primitive man but Steven scares him off. They then encounter a soldier named Exorse, who informs them that the Doctor is with the Elders of a nearby City and escorts them there.

Inside the City, a technologically advanced society greets the Doctor with great honor, offering him a role as a High Elder. Steven and Dodo are presented with gifts, but Steven grows suspicious of the city's idyllic facade, questioning how they achieved such a prosperous civilization. The Elders claim they have made discoveries to give everyone “greater energy, greater intellect and greater talents.” The Doctor begins to ask questions about the source of the city's advanced energy, sensing something amiss. Meanwhile, outside the city, the primitive people, including a young woman named Nanina, are hunted by the city guards. Nanina is captured and brought into the City.

The Doctor learns that the City's advanced society sustains itself by draining the life energy from the primitive people living outside the city walls. Jano shows the Doctor technology allows them to transfer life's energy. Dodo witnesses a guard taking Nanina prisoner. Nanina is brought to a control room where her life energy is prepared to be extracted. Dodo, becoming increasingly suspicious, slips away from a guided tour and discovers a hidden corridor. She sees Exorse disappearing into the corridor, reinforcing her suspicions about the city's true nature.

Steven, growing increasingly suspicious, wants to know how the city manages such perfection only within the city itself. Dodo slips away from the others and enters the corridor, determined to uncover the truth. She finds herself in a darkened corridor, while the Doctor inside the chamber is told by Jano that with their advanced knowledge, they can make the brave man braver; the wise man wiser; and the strong man stronger, to see the advanced of perfection of their race. The episode concludes with Steven and Flower discovering Dodo's disappearance, leaving them to wonder what has happened to her.

Act 1

The TARDIS lands in a rocky ravine, where the Doctor confidently declares their arrival in a peaceful, prosperous future. Steven and Dodo's immediate encounter with primitive figures in animal skins, however, directly contradicts the Doctor's optimistic assessment. Steven leaves to find the Doctor, while Dodo faces a direct threat from a primitive man. Before Steven can fully process this, two technologically advanced soldiers, Captain Edal and Exorse, intercept the Doctor. They reveal they have been tracking the TARDIS for 'many light years' and welcome him as 'the Traveller from Beyond Time,' inviting him to their City to meet the Elders. Exorse is dispatched to retrieve Steven and Dodo. Meanwhile, Steven and Dodo are attacked by more primitives, but Exorse intervenes, saving them. He confirms the Doctor's safety and escorts them to the City. This sequence establishes the central conflict between appearances and reality. The Doctor's initial belief in a utopia is immediately challenged by the primitives, then seemingly validated by the advanced soldiers, setting up the deeper deception. The soldiers' knowledge of the Doctor and his travels, combined with their advanced technology, establishes the City's power and mystery, drawing the protagonists into its sphere. The initial threat from the primitives is quickly overshadowed by the enigmatic welcome from the City, shifting the narrative focus from survival in the wilderness to navigating a seemingly benevolent, yet suspicious, advanced society.

Act 2

Inside the City, the Elders, led by Jano, greet the Doctor with immense honor, offering him the prestigious role of a High Elder. The Doctor, flattered, accepts the elaborate robes but quickly begins to question the true source of the City's unparalleled prosperity and advanced state, sensing an underlying anomaly. Steven and Dodo receive gifts, but Steven's suspicion deepens as he probes the City's seemingly perfect, isolated existence. Simultaneously, outside the City walls, the primitive people, including a young woman named Nanina, are actively hunted by city guards. Exorse captures Nanina using his 'light gun,' demonstrating the City's control over the 'savages.' Jano then reveals the City's dark secret to the Doctor: they 'transfer the energy of life directly to ourselves' from other life forms, storing it in vats to enhance their own vitality and intellect. Dodo, witnessing Exorse force Nanina into the City as a prisoner, grows increasingly alarmed. Her tour guides, Avon and Flower, dismiss her questions about the world outside and the 'savages.' Dodo, driven by her observations, deliberately slips away from the guided tour and discovers a concealed corridor, which she saw Exorse use. She enters the darkened passage, determined to uncover the truth. This act escalates the conflict, moving from general suspicion to concrete evidence of exploitation and Dodo's active investigation.

Act 3

Dodo finds herself in a darkened corridor, navigating the gloom as she ventures deeper into the City's hidden infrastructure. Unbeknownst to her, Nanina, the recently captured primitive, is brought into a control room where chief scientist Senta oversees the process of energy extraction. Nanina is strapped to a gurney, prepared for the draining of her life force, a chilling confirmation of the City's exploitative practices. Senta, impatient with delays, instructs his technicians to proceed with the transfer, emphasizing the need to maintain a specific 'vitality reading' to ensure the primitive's survival for future use. Meanwhile, in the Council Chamber, Jano continues to elaborate on the City's philosophy to the Doctor, proudly asserting that their advanced knowledge allows them to enhance their race, making 'the brave man braver, the wise man wiser, the strong man stronger,' thereby achieving 'perfection.' This chilling vision of engineered superiority, built upon the suffering of others, starkly contrasts with the Doctor's ideals. The episode culminates with Steven and Flower realizing Dodo's disappearance from their group. Steven calls out for her, but receives no answer, leaving her fate uncertain and establishing a clear cliffhanger for the next installment. Dodo's solo investigation places her in immediate danger, while the Doctor remains somewhat oblivious to the full extent of the horror unfolding around him.
