The Seeds of Death Part 2

When T-Mat malfunctions, threatening global chaos, the Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie must use a retro rocket to reach Moonbase and fix the problem before the Ice Warriors' plans for conquering Earth come to fruition.

The episode opens with Slaar, an Ice Warrior, commanding Fewsham to repair the emergency T-Mat link on the moonbase. Meanwhile, on Earth, Commander Radnor and others discuss the T-Mat malfunction and its devastating consequences for global supply chains. A scientist named Eldred refuses to allow the use of his rocket for a rescue mission to the Moon. The Doctor, along with Zoe and Jamie, offer their assistance, with the Doctor confident in his ability to get the rocket to the Moon. Despite Eldred's reservations and warnings about the rocket's unreadiness, Radnor orders Kelly to prepare the rocket for launch. Kelly expresses her concerns about the Doctor and his companions crewing the rocket, but Radnor trusts the Doctor's knowledge of space travel. As the rocket launch approaches, tensions rise, and technical personnel work against the clock to get everything ready. The rocket, ZA685, launches, but communication is lost shortly after liftoff. On the moonbase, Phipps hides from the Ice Warriors and attempts to send a message to Earth. Kelly arrives at Moonbase via T-Mat, encountering a chaotic scene and a suspicious Fewsham. Phipps uses an infra-red lamp to eliminate an Ice Warrior while trying to send a message to Earth. Back in the rocket, the Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie face their own challenges as they try to reach the Moon and activate the homing beam, unaware of the dangers awaiting them.

Act 1

On Moonbase, Slaar commands Fewsham to repair the critical T-Mat link, while Phipps makes a desperate escape from the Ice Warriors. Simultaneously, on Earth, Commander Radnor, Kelly, and Eldred grapple with the escalating global crisis caused by the T-Mat malfunction, which has brought vital supply chains to a standstill, threatening widespread famine. Eldred adamantly refuses to allow his experimental rocket, ZA685, to be used for a rescue mission, citing its unreadiness, unchecked equipment, and the extreme dangers involved. The Doctor, along with Zoe and Jamie, unexpectedly volunteers to pilot the rocket, confidently asserting his considerable experience in space travel and that of his companions. Despite Eldred's persistent objections and dire warnings about the rocket's perilous state, Radnor, driven by the urgent global emergency and the Doctor's self-assured demeanor, overrides all reservations and orders Kelly to prepare the rocket for an immediate launch. This pivotal decision sets in motion a high-stakes, desperate attempt to reach the Moon, placing the fate of Earth's population on the shoulders of an unconventional crew and an untested craft.

Act 2

As preparations for the rocket launch intensify, Kelly expresses significant reservations about the Doctor and his companions crewing the mission, questioning their suitability and experience given the critical nature of the task. Radnor, however, dismisses her concerns, trusting the Doctor's asserted knowledge of space travel, despite Eldred's continued warnings about the rocket's unreadiness and the potential unreliability of the Moon's unmaintained refuelling and homing systems. Jamie, initially overlooked, insists on joining the three-person crew, solidifying the team. The launch sequence commences under immense pressure, with Mission Control personnel working against the clock. Rocket ZA685 successfully lifts off, a rare sight in this era, but immediately after liftoff, communication with the rocket is lost, leaving Mission Control in a state of alarm and the crew isolated in space, grappling with a burnt-out circuit. Simultaneously, Kelly, frustrated by the lack of progress and driven by her expertise in T-Mat, defies Radnor's direct orders and uses the newly activated emergency T-Mat link to transport herself to Moonbase, creating a dual, uncoordinated approach to the crisis. This act establishes the perilous journey and the divided efforts to resolve the crisis.

Act 3

Kelly arrives at Moonbase via T-Mat, encountering a chaotic and unsettling scene. Fewsham provides a suspicious and contradictory account of events, claiming 'space madness' led to Osgood's death and Locke's murder, while Phipps is supposedly sedated. Kelly immediately discerns Fewsham's fear and evasiveness, realizing the situation is far more sinister than reported. Meanwhile, Phipps, still hidden in the Solar Energy Store Room, continues his desperate attempts to send an emergency message to Earth, utilizing an infra-red lamp to eliminate an approaching Ice Warrior, demonstrating both the direct threat and his resourcefulness. Aboard the rocket, the Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie navigate their damaged craft, focusing on activating the Moon's homing beam for a safe landing, unaware of the immediate dangers and the Ice Warrior presence below. As the homing beam activates, Phipps manages to kill another Ice Warrior while attempting to send his message, but simultaneously, the homing beam light on the Moonbase indicator abruptly extinguishes. This critical new complication plunges the Doctor's mission into renewed peril just as they are on the verge of making contact with the Moon, leaving their landing uncertain and the fate of both missions hanging precariously.
