Frontier in Space Part 1

The crew of Earth cargo ship C982 must evade a Draconian battle cruiser and navigate through time and space to prevent an intergalactic war.

The Earth cargo ship C982, on a routine mission, encounters a mysterious object that turns out to be a TARDIS, a time machine from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor and his companion Jo are on board the TARDIS, which materializes inside the cargo ship. As they try to find a way back to their own time, they become entangled in a conflict between Earth and the Draconian Empire. The Draconians, who are at war with Earth, mistake the humans for 'Dragons', creatures from Earth's mythology that they fear. The Doctor and Jo must navigate through this complex web of time, space, and interspecies politics to prevent an intergalactic war. Along the way, they encounter Ogrons, mercenaries working for various alien factions. The Doctor uses his knowledge of time and space to help the Earth crew evade the Draconians and ultimately prevent a catastrophic war.

Act 1

The Earth cargo ship C982, crewed by Hardy and Stewart, navigates space on a routine mission, their dialogue hinting at growing tensions and fears of war with the Draconian Empire. During a hyperspace transition, a mysterious object, the TARDIS, nearly collides with C982 before materializing within its cargo hold. The Doctor and Jo emerge, disoriented and attempting to ascertain their temporal and spatial location. Their efforts are cut short when C982 comes under attack by a vessel Hardy identifies as a Draconian battle cruiser. A peculiar, fear-inducing noise causes Hardy and Stewart to perceive the Doctor and Jo as terrifying "Dragons" and "Drashigs," creatures from their mythology. Consequently, the cargo ship crew takes the Doctor and Jo hostage, locking them in a small room. Concurrently, on Earth, the President engages in a heated diplomatic confrontation with a Draconian Prince. Both leaders accuse the other's empire of unprovoked attacks and cargo theft, pushing their respective governments closer to a full-scale intergalactic war. General Williams, a high-ranking military official, expresses his long-standing animosity towards the Draconians and advocates for immediate, forceful retaliation. The Doctor and Jo remain imprisoned, their identities distorted by the perception filter, inextricably entangled in a conflict they barely understand.

Act 2

Confined within a small room aboard C982, the Doctor elucidates the mechanism behind the crew's distorted perceptions to Jo. He explains that the "Dragons" are, in fact, Draconians, and the unsettling noise they heard employs ultrasonics to trigger primal fear responses in the brain, causing individuals to manifest their deepest anxieties visually. The Doctor theorizes their current predicament places them squarely between the rapidly expanding Earth and Draconian empires, both teetering on the precipice of a catastrophic war. Simultaneously, the Draconian battle cruiser, now identified as containing Ogron mercenaries, initiates a forceful breach of C982's airlock. Stewart, driven by desperation, resolves to deploy the Doctor and Jo as human shields against the impending boarders. The Doctor, employing his sonic screwdriver, skillfully unbolts their cell door just as Hardy arrives to escort them. Forced towards the breached airlock, Jo identifies the incoming figures as Ogrons. The Doctor, seizing a critical moment, shoves Stewart into the path of the advancing Ogrons, creating a vital diversion for Jo to retreat towards the TARDIS. An Ogron shoots Hardy, then fires at the Doctor, who collapses, appearing gravely wounded. The Ogrons proceed to systematically steal the ship's cargo and, significantly, the TARDIS itself, before meticulously repairing the airlock and vanishing from the scene.

Act 3

In the immediate aftermath of the Ogron attack, Jo frantically searches for the Doctor, who, having been hit by a neuronic stun gun, eventually regains consciousness. Together, they discover the Ogrons stole both the ship's cargo and, to their profound dismay, the TARDIS, leaving them stranded. The Doctor questions the Ogrons' motives, noting the sophistication of the perception filter and their unusual act of repairing the airlock, suggesting a deeper, more complex conspiracy than simple theft. He dismisses Jo's initial theory about the Daleks, emphasizing the Ogrons' mercenary nature, indicating they likely work for another, as yet unknown, faction. As they investigate the damaged ship, they find Hardy and Stewart also stunned but otherwise unharmed. An Earth Battle Cruiser makes contact, approaching C982 to assess the situation. The Doctor takes control of the cargo ship's communications, reporting the attack and the stolen cargo to the approaching Earth forces, but strategically omits any mention of the TARDIS or the Ogrons' true identity. The episode concludes with the Earth Battle Cruiser preparing to board, setting the stage for the Doctor and Jo's interaction with Earth authorities and the unfolding investigation into the true perpetrators behind the escalating interplanetary conflict.
