Frontier in Space Part 4

The Doctor and Professor Dale, prisoners on a space station, attempt to escape with the help of a mysterious figure, but are recaptured by the Master, who plans to deliver them to the Ogrons.

The Doctor and Professor Dale are imprisoned on a space station for attempting to escape. The Doctor demands an inquiry, suspecting a conspiracy involving the station's governor and a trusty named Cross. The Master's interest in the Doctor leads to a deal with the governor, where the Doctor will be handed over to him. The Master takes the Doctor and Jo Grant, a fellow prisoner, on his spaceship, intending to deliver them to the Ogrons. The Doctor and Jo form a plan to escape, using a piece of wire and a spacesuit. They successfully evade the Master's initial attempts to stop them, but their escape is complicated by course corrections and the Master's efforts to capture them. Jo is used as leverage to try and capture the Doctor, who outwits the Master and ultimately escapes, leaving Jo temporarily in the Master's custody.

Act 1

The Doctor and Professor Dale face imminent suffocation in a lunar airlock after a failed escape attempt. The Master intervenes, saving them only to reveal his sinister interest in the Doctor. Back in the Governor's office, the Doctor demands an inquiry, accusing the Governor and his trusty, Cross, of a conspiracy to eliminate Professor Dale, who is deemed politically dangerous. Cross denies the accusations, but the Doctor's pointed questions expose the inconsistencies in their story. Despite the Doctor's compelling arguments, the Governor sentences both him and Dale to a year of solitary confinement. The Master, however, leverages his knowledge of the Governor's conspiracy, subtly blackmailing him into releasing the Doctor into his custody. He presents fabricated charges against the Doctor, claiming he is a notorious criminal wanted on Sirius 4. The Master further reveals he has already captured Jo Grant, the Doctor's companion, using her as a psychological weapon. The Doctor, now a prisoner of the Master, is taken to his police spaceship, where he finds Jo already confined in a barred cage. The Master gloats over his victory, explaining his employers, implied to be the Ogrons, are keenly interested in the Doctor, and their destination is the Ogrons' home planet. This act firmly establishes the Master's control and the dire predicament of the Doctor and Jo.

Act 2

Confined within the Master's supposedly impenetrable police spaceship brig, the Doctor and Jo Grant reunite, their conversation a mix of relief and grim understanding of their predicament. The Master, confident in his vessel's security, leaves them under continuous surveillance, boasting about the ship's design for prisoner transport and its destination: the remote, barren planet of the Ogrons. Undeterred, the Doctor immediately formulates an escape plan, revealing a hidden steel file he concealed in his boot. He instructs Jo to wait until the Master has set the ship's automatic controls, ensuring their escape attempt occurs during a stable flight phase. As the Master lifts off and straps himself into the bridge, activating the CCTV, the Doctor and Jo begin their elaborate deception. They engage in a seemingly innocuous conversation about the Doctor's past trials and exile, a performance designed to appear as casual reminiscence for the Master's benefit. Behind his back, the Doctor meticulously works on the cage door's hinge with his steel wire, slowly but surely compromising their prison. The Master, lulled into a false sense of security, occasionally monitors their chatter but primarily occupies himself with reading, oblivious to the Doctor's silent, persistent efforts to secure their freedom. This act builds tension through the Doctor's covert actions and the Master's unwitting complacency.

Act 3

The Doctor's meticulous efforts culminate as he severs the cage hinge. Jo, understanding the cue, positions herself to obstruct the CCTV's view, allowing the Doctor to discreetly don a spacesuit. He then crawls to the airlock, opens it, and exits the spaceship onto its hull, waving a silent farewell to Jo. The Master, engrossed in his reading, remains oblivious until a navigation panel alert signals a necessary course correction. He broadcasts a warning to his prisoners, initiating a sharp maneuver that violently dislodges the Doctor from the ship's exterior ladder. Adrift in space, the Doctor resourcefully uses his disconnected air hose as a makeshift jet to propel himself back to the hull. Reconnecting his air, he climbs towards an access hatch and infiltrates the ship. Meanwhile, the Master, now suspicious, questions Jo about the Doctor's well-being. Jo feigns ignorance, claiming the Doctor is asleep, but her distress betrays her. The Master, retrieving a hand weapon, enters the brig, quickly discovering the Doctor's escape. Realizing the Doctor has gone into space, he seizes Jo, locking her in the airlock. The Master then broadcasts a chilling ultimatum, threatening to jettison Jo into space unless the Doctor surrenders. However, the Doctor, having already entered the bridge area, disarms the Master with a whip, preventing him from activating the airlock controls. As a new, large spaceship approaches, the Doctor keeps the Master at bay, leaving Jo trapped in the airlock, her cries for help echoing.
