Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor's abrupt interception by a Time Lord, who tasks him with a critical mission: prevent the creation of the Daleks or alter their genetic makeup to be less aggressive. Initially resistant to the Time Lords' interference, the Doctor accepts upon hearing 'Daleks,' understanding the gravity of their future threat. The Time Lord then reveals they are already on Skaro, dropping the Doctor, Sarah, and Harry directly into a desolate, war-torn landscape. The trio immediately faces the brutal realities of a protracted conflict between unseen factions, navigating a battlefield littered with advanced weaponry alongside primitive defenses like gas masks and barbed wire. This incongruous mix of technology suggests a civilization on the brink, fighting a war of attrition that has depleted its resources over centuries. They narrowly escape a creeping artillery barrage and a deadly minefield, highlighting the immediate danger of their surroundings. During their perilous journey, they observe the propped-up corpses of soldiers in trenches, a grim testament to the war's toll. A sudden gas attack forces them to scavenge respirators from the dead, but they are quickly overwhelmed and captured by Kaled soldiers. Sarah is separated from the Doctor and Harry during the chaos, left behind in the trenches as her companions are taken deeper into the Kaled stronghold. This act establishes the Doctor's mission, the perilous setting of Skaro, and the immediate challenges faced by the companions, culminating in their capture and separation, which serves as the first major turning point, propelling them directly into the Kaled conflict.

Act 2

Following their capture, the Doctor and Harry are transported to a Kaled command center, where they are brought before General Ravon. Ravon, a harsh and arrogant military leader, immediately demonstrates his brutality by punching the Doctor for insolence and revealing the Kaleds' genocidal intent: the 'total extermination of the Thals.' The Doctor, despite being a prisoner, maintains his defiance, challenging Ravon's military capabilities and mocking his 'boy soldiers' and depleted ammunition. Seizing an opportune moment, the Doctor disarms Ravon, and Harry quickly secures the general, turning the tables on their captor. They force Ravon to guide them through the Kaled complex, attempting to escape back to the wastelands. During their escape attempt, they encounter Security Commander Nyder, a cold and calculating figure who immediately recognizes the Doctor and Harry as intruders. Nyder orders his guards to open fire, forcing the Doctor and Harry into a desperate chase through the labyrinthine corridors of the Kaled base. Despite their initial evasion, they are eventually cornered and recaptured by Nyder's forces. Meanwhile, Sarah, abandoned in the trenches, awakens and begins a desperate search for her friends, only to find herself pursued by a 'shabby creature' – later revealed to be a Muto – through the mist-shrouded wasteland. Back in the command center, Nyder interrogates the Doctor and Harry, dismissing Ravon's theories about them being Thals or advanced Mutos. Nyder introduces the name of Davros, the Kaleds' 'greatest scientist' and head of research at the bunker, a figure whose authority even General Ravon cannot defy. Nyder reveals the Kaleds' eugenics policy, explaining Mutos as genetically 'imperfects' banished to the wasteland. The act concludes with Nyder asserting his authority and taking the Doctor and Harry to Davros's bunker for further interrogation, setting the stage for their direct confrontation with the creator of the Daleks. This pivotal moment serves as the episode's cliffhanger, leaving Sarah's fate uncertain and placing the Doctor and Harry squarely in the heart of the Dalek genesis.
