The Doctor and Romana arrive on the planet Delta Magna IV to find a refinery operation being threatened by a massive creature known as Kroll, worshipped by the native Swampies. As tensions rise between the refinery personnel and the Swampies, Thawn, the ruthless operations leader, plans to destroy Kroll using an orbital energy shot. The Doctor and Romana must intervene to prevent catastrophe, navigating complex conflicts between the humans and the Swampies, while uncovering the truth behind Kroll's true nature and its connection to an ancient artifact. Ultimately, they succeed in stopping Thawn's destructive plans and helping Kroll return to its natural state, but not before facing numerous challenges and moral dilemmas that test their understanding of the universe and its diverse life forms.

Act 1

The Doctor and Romana, having narrowly escaped Kroll's initial attack, learn of Thawn's escalating ruthlessness. Thawn, determined to eliminate the perceived threat, orders an orbital energy shot not only to destroy Kroll but also the Swampy settlement, disregarding the inherent dangers to the planet's atmosphere and the lives of the natives. As Thawn initiates the countdown, Fenner and Dugeen voice strong moral objections. Dugeen, driven by his conviction that all life is sacred, attempts to abort the launch, but Thawn fatally shoots him, demonstrating his fanatical commitment to the refinery's operation. Racing against the clock, the Doctor and Romana infiltrate the rocket silo. The Doctor, with Romana's assistance, manages to disable the rocket's primary ignition from within the firing bay, halting the countdown at the last second and averting the immediate, catastrophic explosion. However, Kroll, now fully enraged by the refinery's activities, directly attacks the facility. Simultaneously, the fanatical Ranquin and his followers arrive, misinterpreting Kroll's aggression as divine retribution against the "dryfoots." Ranquin's unwavering, yet misguided, faith in Kroll leads to his tragic demise as the colossal creature consumes him. The Doctor then, using the fifth segment of the ancient Symbol of Power, confronts Kroll on the refinery's superstructure, causing the massive creature to vanish in a series of flashes, revealing the segment. This direct intervention resolves the immediate threat posed by Kroll.

Act 2

With Kroll vanquished, the refinery faces an unforeseen and critical threat: the automated computer system, designed for continuous operation, initiates a countdown for another orbital shot. Unaware that the firing bay is now blocked by the remnants of Kroll's attack, this imminent launch threatens to trigger a catastrophic explosion that would destroy the entire refinery and potentially asphyxiate everyone present. Fenner desperately reveals that the manual override and abort systems are non-functional, leaving only precious seconds to act. The Doctor, recognizing the gravity of the situation, frantically opens a control panel in the console and cuts numerous wires, successfully halting the countdown at the very last moment, averting the final, devastating explosion. In the aftermath, Fenner confronts Thawn, accusing him of Dugeen's cold-blooded murder, highlighting the moral cost of Thawn's actions. The Doctor and Romana prepare for their departure, offering Fenner and Varlik, the surviving Swampy, guidance for establishing a new, peaceful existence on Delta Magna IV, free from the conflict and exploitation that defined their past. As they navigate the swamp back to the TARDIS, the Doctor elucidates Kroll's true nature: not a singular monster, but a manifestation of the Symbol of Power. Now, with the segment recovered, Kroll has reverted to countless ordinary cuttlefish, ensuring that no future "Kroll" can ever emerge to threaten the planet again. The TARDIS dematerializes, leaving Delta Magna IV to its transformed future.
