Act 1

Act One introduces the primary characters, establishes the central mystery, and sets the Doctor and Romana on their mission. The narrative opens on an alien space station where Christopher Neame, a scarred figure, manipulates a device, causing other men to convulse. He then takes a mysterious sphere and departs in a spaceship, leaving the others incapacitated. Simultaneously, in Cambridge, student Daniel Hill (Parsons) visits the eccentric Professor Chronotis, a white-haired academic whose study contains a police telephone box (TARDIS). Parsons borrows several books, one of which he later discovers is extraterrestrial, exhibiting strange properties like time manipulation and resistance to scientific examination. The Doctor and Romana arrive in Cambridge, punting on the River Cam, where they are observed by Neame, now dressed in Renaissance attire and carrying a whispering carpet bag. Upon visiting Chronotis, he reveals himself as a retired Time Lord who has resided in Cambridge for three centuries. The Doctor and Romana believe Chronotis sent a signal for help, which Chronotis eventually recalls, linking it to a dangerous book. Neame, now identified as Skagra, arrives at St. Cedd's, demanding to see Chronotis and later demonstrates advanced alien technology by disappearing into an invisible spaceship. Chronotis finally identifies the dangerous book as 'The Worshipful And Ancient Law Of Gallifrey,' a powerful artifact from Rassilon's era, which he 'accidentally' brought from Gallifrey. The Doctor recognizes the immense risk this book poses, committing to find it before it falls into the wrong hands, while Parsons continues his independent, perilous investigation.
