Shada Part 2

The Doctor and Romana search for a powerful artifact, the Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey, while facing off against the villainous Skagra, who seeks to exploit its power.

In 'Shada - Part Two', the Doctor and Romana are on a mission to find the Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey, one of the powerful artifacts imbued with significant power. Their search leads them through various encounters, including a book search in Professor Chronotis' rooms, where they discuss the meaning and power of the artifacts.

The Doctor and Romana's quest intersects with Chris Parsons, a young chemist who becomes entangled in their adventure. Meanwhile, Skagra, a villainous character, emerges as the main antagonist, seeking the artifact for his own purposes. Skagra's true intentions and powers become increasingly clear as the story unfolds.

Throughout their journey, the characters face numerous challenges and obstacles. Professor Chronotis, under Skagra's influence, is subjected to psychoactive extraction, which leaves him in a deep coma. The Doctor, Romana, and Chris Parsons work together to understand the artifact's nature and to prevent Skagra from misusing its power.

The artifact, revealed to be a book with unusual properties, defies conventional understanding. Tests show that it lacks atomic structure and seems to be made of pure matter. The book's origins and purpose remain mysterious, but its significance to the plot is undeniable.

As the story reaches its climax, the Doctor and his companions face off against Skagra, who seeks to exploit the artifact's power for his own gain. The Doctor manages to evade Skagra's attempts to extract his thoughts and ultimately aims to secure the artifact in a safe location.

The narrative weaves together themes of power, knowledge, and the responsibility that comes with it. The characters' actions and decisions drive the plot forward, leading to a complex and engaging story.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Romana meticulously searching Professor Chronotis's cluttered rooms for the elusive "Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey." Their conversation establishes the artifact's profound significance, not merely as a historical relic but as an object imbued with "stupendous power" and ancient rituals, whose true meaning has largely been forgotten. Romana recalls her Time Academy induction oath, highlighting the gravity of protecting such ancient laws. Simultaneously, a parallel storyline unfolds in a physics lab, where Chris Parsons and Clare Keightley are examining the very book the Doctor seeks. They conduct tests that reveal the book's utterly anomalous nature: it feels like paper but lacks polymers, has no crystalline structure, and defies conventional scientific understanding by appearing to be "pure matter" without atomic structure. This discovery immediately elevates the book from a mere object of historical interest to a profound scientific mystery and a potential source of immense, unknown power. Back in Chronotis's rooms, the Professor's failing memory becomes a minor comedic interlude, as he struggles to recall Parsons' name, inadvertently providing the Doctor with a lead. The Doctor, sensing urgency and potential danger, gives Romana strict instructions to secure herself and the TARDIS if he does not return promptly, signaling the transition from a scholarly search to an impending threat. This act effectively sets the stage, introduces the central object of desire, hints at its extraordinary capabilities, and establishes the initial quest, while subtly building a sense of foreboding.

Act 2

The second act dramatically escalates the stakes as the villainous Skagra makes his direct entrance, immediately demonstrating his formidable power and sinister intent. Having tracked Chronotis, Skagra confronts the Professor in his rooms, demanding the book. When Chronotis resists, Skagra deploys a floating sphere from his carpet bag, using it for "psychoactive extraction" that leaves the Professor in a deep, life-threatening coma. This brutal act firmly establishes Skagra as a dangerous antagonist. Romana, returning to Chronotis's rooms with milk, discovers the Professor's critical condition. Chris Parsons arrives, and with K9's diagnostic capabilities, they confirm Chronotis has suffered a severe cerebral trauma due to a forced mind-extraction. Meanwhile, the Doctor, now in the physics lab with Clare, continues his investigation into the mysterious book. He discovers the carbon dating yields a negative age, indicating the book is not only non-atomic but also exists outside normal temporal flow, reinforcing its extraordinary and dangerous nature. Back with Chronotis, Romana ingeniously uses a medical collar and K9's amplification to decipher the Professor's dying message, communicated through Gallifreyan Morse code via his heartbeats. Chronotis delivers a cryptic but crucial warning: "Beware. The. Sphere. Beware. Skagra. Beware. Shada. The. Secret. Is. In. The..." before succumbing to his injuries. This revelation solidifies Skagra's identity as the primary threat and introduces "Shada" as a key mystery. The act culminates in a direct confrontation on a bridge, where Skagra, now openly displaying the sphere, demands the book from the Doctor. The Doctor, defiant, refuses to surrender it and narrowly evades Skagra's attempt to extract his mind, setting up a clear conflict and chase.
