The Doctor and Romana must stop Skagra, a mind thief, from obtaining a powerful book and exploiting the knowledge of a captured Time Lord, while navigating through time and space.

The Doctor, Romana, and Chris Parsons find themselves entangled in a complex web of timey-wimey adventures as they try to thwart the plans of Skagra, a villainous entity with the ability to steal minds. The story begins with the Doctor and Romana materializing in Cambridge, only to find that Professor Chronotis has vanished, leaving behind a cryptic message about Skagra and a powerful book. As they investigate, they discover that Skagra has stolen the Professor's mind and is using it for his own nefarious purposes. The Doctor and his companions must navigate through time and space, encountering various obstacles, including an invisible spaceship and a brig-like room with no doors or windows. Along the way, they uncover the truth about Skagra's plans and the significance of the book, which holds the key to Gallifreyan knowledge. As tensions rise, the Doctor must use his cunning and intelligence to outwit Skagra and save his friends, all while confronting the darker aspects of his own nature.

Act 1

The narrative opens as the TARDIS materializes in Cambridge, where the Doctor and Romana discover Professor Chronotis has vanished, leaving Chris Parsons in confusion. Parsons explains Chronotis's body disappeared after his mind was stolen by Skagra, who also threatened the Doctor. Warnings about 'the sphere, Skagra, and Shada' are relayed, establishing the central conflict and antagonist. The Doctor, determined to confront Skagra, prepares to track the sphere, while the sphere demonstrates its lethal capability by stealing a fisherman's mind. The Doctor, Romana, and Parsons then track the sphere to an invisible spaceship in a field. After some investigation, they locate a hidden ramp and gain entry to the advanced alien vessel. Inside, Skagra, already possessing the powerful book, monitors their approach and allows them to enter, setting a trap. In the ship's corridor, the Doctor's attempt to send his companions back to safety is thwarted when a mysterious cube appears, making Romana, Parsons, and K9 vanish. Skagra then confronts the isolated Doctor, demanding he read the Gallifreyan book, believing the Doctor knows its code. The Doctor attempts to bluff and delay, but Skagra, undeterred, uses the mind-stealing sphere on him, eliciting a scream. This sequence establishes Skagra's power, the immediate threat to the Doctor, and the separation and capture of the main protagonists, shifting the narrative from investigation to direct peril.

Act 2

Following the Doctor's capture, Romana, K9, and Parsons find themselves imprisoned in a sealed, doorless brig within Skagra's spacecraft. Parsons theorizes matter transference brought them there, while Romana attempts to use K9 to locate the Doctor, but all signals are shielded. K9 eventually detects faint signals, identifying the Doctor's voice among the 'muttering voices' of stolen minds, confirming the Doctor's mental distress and the severity of Skagra's attack. Concurrently, a subplot unfolds back in Cambridge as Clare, concerned about Parsons and Chronotis, discovers the powerful book is 'atomically unstable' and absorbing radioactivity, highlighting its dangerous nature and her independent pursuit of the truth. Back in the brig, Romana's frustration peaks, and she wishes aloud for escape. Immediately, the mysterious cube of light reappears and makes Romana vanish, leaving Parsons and K9 isolated and bewildered. Parsons attempts to replicate Romana's 'wish' to escape but fails, emphasizing his helplessness. Outside the ship, Skagra, now in control of Romana, leads her to the TARDIS. Despite Romana's defiance, Skagra possesses the Doctor's key, unlocks the TARDIS, and forces her inside. He follows, accompanied by the sphere, and the TARDIS dematerializes with the key still in the lock. This sequence significantly escalates Skagra's advantage, demonstrating his control over the heroes and their resources, and leaves the remaining protagonists in a dire, isolated situation.
