Meglos Part 1

The Doctor and Romana arrive on Tigella, where they become embroiled in a conflict between the ruling Deons and the scientifically-minded Savants, while a rogue planet, Zolfa-Thura, looms in the background, harboring a sinister secret.

The Doctor and Romana materialize in the TARDIS, en route to their next destination. Upon arrival in the Prion planetary system, they find themselves hovering near the planet Tigella, home to an ancient and technologically advanced civilization. The Doctor reveals he has visited Tigella before, meeting a man named Zastor. On Tigella, they learn about the planet's history and the remnants of its once-great civilization. The planet's surface has become uninhabitable due to aggressive vegetation, forcing the inhabitants to live underground. The Doctor and Romana soon become entangled in the internal power struggle between the spiritual leaders, known as Deons, and the scientifically-oriented Savants. Zastor, the leader, grapples with the impending doom of his people, whose food supplies are dwindling, and their technology is failing. Meanwhile, on the desolate planet Zolfa-Thura, a group of mercenaries, led by General Grugger and Lieutenant Brotadac, arrive to capture an Earthling, who is taken to the laboratory of Meglos, a sinister and cunning foe. Meglos plans to harness the energy of the Dodecahedron, a powerful artifact created by the ancient Tigellans, which could provide limitless power but also poses significant risks. As the Doctor and Romana try to intervene, they find themselves caught in a web of time loops and competing interests, all while navigating the complex moral and philosophical dilemmas of the Tigellan society.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Romana aboard the TARDIS, repairing K9 and discussing their current location within the Prion planetary system. Romana identifies Tigella and Zolfa-Thura, prompting the Doctor to recall a previous visit to Tigella and a contact named Zastor. Concurrently, on Tigella, an explosion in Walkway 9 signals a severe technological malfunction, highlighting the planet's precarious state. Caris, a Savant, reports the emergency, underscoring the urgency of the situation. In Central Control, Zastor, the planet's leader, grapples with Deedrix, a prominent Savant, over the failing technology and the planet's dwindling resources. Deedrix advocates for scientific investigation and challenges the Deons' traditionalist views, particularly regarding the Dodecahedron, which he insists is an artifact, not a divine entity. Lexa, a rigid Deon Priestess, vehemently opposes any scientific interference with what she considers sacred. The ideological clash between the scientifically-minded Savants and the spiritually-devoted Deons intensifies, paralyzing any decisive action. Zastor, caught between these factions and facing the imminent collapse of his civilization, makes a critical decision: he reveals to Lexa and Deedrix that he has sent for an 'alien,' a man he knew fifty years ago, who possesses a unique ability to solve insoluble problems. This decision, driven by desperation and a belief in the Doctor's unconventional methods, serves as the inciting incident, setting the stage for the Time Lord's involvement in Tigella's crisis. The act establishes the core conflict on Tigella, introduces its key players, and directly invites the protagonists into the unfolding drama.

Act 2

While the Doctor and Romana remain occupied with K9's repairs in the TARDIS, unaware of Zastor's summons, the narrative shifts focus to the desolate planet Zolfa-Thura. Here, a mercenary group led by General Grugger and Lieutenant Brotadac lands, delivering an Earthling prisoner to a mysterious, five-sided structure. This structure, the 'Screens of Zolfa-Thura,' rises from the sand to reveal Meglos's laboratory. Meglos, initially appearing as a sentient cactus, introduces himself as the sole survivor of Zolfa-Thura. He reveals his sinister plan to Grugger: to harness the full potential of the Dodecahedron, an artifact he claims originated on Zolfa-Thura, not Tigella. Meglos explains that the Tigellans utilize only a fraction of its power, and he intends to amplify its energy output twelve-fold, capable of feeding an entire galaxy. To ensure Grugger and Brotadac's cooperation in retrieving the Dodecahedron from Tigella, Meglos subtly traps them within his laboratory. The climax of this act occurs as Meglos initiates a chilling transformation process, using the Earthling as a host. The Earthling's body turns green and spiny, becoming the new physical manifestation of Meglos. Immediately after his transformation, Meglos intercepts a Tigellan message about the impending arrival of a 'travelling Time Lord' – the Doctor. Recognizing the threat the Doctor poses to his plans, Meglos declares his intention to interrupt the Time Lord's travels, setting up a direct confrontation. This act fully establishes the primary antagonist, his grand scheme, and his immediate, proactive move against the protagonist.

Act 3

The final act of 'Part One' immediately demonstrates the tangible consequences of Meglos's intervention. Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor and Romana continue their repairs on K9, with K9 providing crucial information about Zolfa-Thura's destruction and Tigella being the last viable civilization. However, their routine is abruptly shattered by a series of repeating events: a sudden 'fizz, crackle,' the Doctor tripping, Romana giggling, and K9's probe circuit jamming, followed by its ears bursting into life and K9 declaring 'Repairs complete.' This sequence repeats multiple times, creating a sense of growing unease and confusion for the protagonists. Simultaneously, in Meglos's laboratory, the newly transformed Meglos observes the TARDIS crew on a monitor. He smugly explains to Grugger that he has trapped the Doctor within a 'chronic hysteretic loop,' a 'fold of time,' where the Doctor is forced to relive the same short period repeatedly, with his only respite being the loop's reset. Meglos's confident declaration confirms his direct and powerful interference with the Doctor's journey. Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor, recognizing the pattern, articulates the term 'chronic hysteresis,' a condition that, as Romana grimly notes, means they will be 'stuck here forever.' The act culminates with the Doctor and Romana trapped in this inescapable time loop, completely at Meglos's mercy, ending Part One on a critical cliffhanger that leaves the protagonists in immediate peril and highlights the formidable nature of their new adversary.
